Are you promoting what you said you would when they opted in?

I find especially with free sample people that as soon as you plug something other than the sample they got will get spam flags.

One thing you might try (or maybe you're doing this already) is making sure your subscriber knows what it is they're looking at right out of the gate. They might be hitting the spam button before realizing, "Hey--I remember this. I wanted to get this."

One way to do this is to put the product/URL name in the "from" field, or the first words of your subject line. Something like "Smarter Wealth: How to blah blah blah..."

Also, give them as much info as possible in your opener. Who you are, your product name/URL, and what you're writing about. Something like "Hey FIRSTNAME, it's Ryan from Smarter Wealth, with another quick tip on how to get rich fast online..." Make sure they know what's what before they go any further, and hopefully you can cut that spam percentage back.

If it is the email systems that are catching them as spam try looking at the words you are using within the email. Certian words (like 'free') can be scooped up by emails as spam and the subscribers don't even have a chance to see them. They don't even realize you sent them anything.

^^ this. spam filters are going to catch this. thats why you see most of your spam that makes it to your box using words like 'fr*ee' because unless you manually put that into the filter, it wont catch it. Also if you only have a little bit of text then links, you're probably going to get flagged.

As long as you are sending emails to a large number of people,it would be difficult for the emails not to be seen as spam by some of these email providers especially the absolutely free ones like yahoo and msn. What you do is send an email to your lists telling them in the next couple of days i will be sending you...information on..and that they should be sure to check their spam to see if they see your mail. They should also indicate the email as not spam by clicking on the appropriate buttons, that way any subsequent email sent might not be recognized as spam.

There are a number of things that can cause a spam issue.

What auto responder service are you using? If it's a free or low grade one, it's quite likely it has been marked as a site that sends spam. This will happen if its members persistently spam people. It's best to go with a reliable service, like AWeber or GetResponse, the two top services many marketers use.

Also, make sure you spam check your messages before you send them. I use GetResponse and they have a feature that allows you to run your message through their spam filter to see where it sits on the scale. It doesn't take much for a message to register 3, so you have to really watch your word usage.

Another issue is if you are sending your messages from a free email service, like Gmail or Yahoo or some other. Those are frequently causing problems for people because anyone who wants to send a ton of spam uses those types of services. Get your own email address instead and use it in your auto responder messages instead of a free email.

Some email programs automatically catches spam if it's sent from an auto responder, so in some cases there's not much you can do about it.

Finally, ask your subscribers to put your email address into their email client contact list. (use the email where you are sending your messages from, so if it's an AR, use yourname@autoresponder.com

      hope this helps.

are they getting flagged as spam by the mail clients, or from complaints?

I wouldn't worry if it's complaints and they stay under 1%. Staying under .1 would be nice, but I use single opt-in with aweber and usually hover around .4-.5 it seems .

For the record, my biggest spam complaint issue was with my actual confirmation email when I was using double opt-in. There are a lot of ignorant people out there.

Here's something that reduced my spam complaints.. When I started to use a consistant component in my subject lines (my list name - i got the idea from talkbiz ), they dropped a lot. That leads me to believe that a lot of complaints are just from people scanning over their inbox and hitting the spam button on anything they dont recognize. Not only that, but my open rates went up as well.

Mine often pass the 0.1% threshold too. Some of this may be because I use single opt in.

I've started to take to sending out more automated followups, try to weed out those prone to clicking the spam button in your automated followups so they're off your list by the time you send broadcasts.

Thanks for all the helpful information everyone. It has given me a lot to think about

Just for the record I am using Aweber and using double opt it. The spam checker on Aweber almost always has my spam levels between 0-0.5 (sometimes I don't even use link).

So are you guys saying that if I keep my spam levels below 1% then Aweber should be fine with it? basically I am scared of losing my Aweber access

I've been using them for over a year with single opt-in, with my complaints on my broadcasts often hitting that .5% mark, and I haven't had any problems with them.

it might just be ONE phrase you use, like "marketing" or "earn" or "make money" and it would end up in your Spam Folder. Some phrases i myself didnt even know trigger spam catchers.

I use amemeber and it can scan emails and scan for such phrases.

Use standard text emails with a link to a graphical version of the email on your site. Creates fresh content and stops ISPs from blocking the email before it gets to the client.

In order for your email not be spam you must put it in your website informing that they should first add your e-mail address into their contact lists so that it could no to spam alert.

    Thankyou everyone for the advice.
There has been some great advice dished out

I think the main idea to not get marked as spam is to not spam people.
Let people know you will be emailing them and do your best to offer quality content...
