how do you get your best ideas?

first of all, happy Halloween everyone, hope you all get a lot of candy tomorrow night.

I was wondering what you are doing when you get your best ideas, what inspires your best work, me I like to get pumped up with loud music, and shut my self in my room with my thoughts.

our best ideas come from sitting around the kitchen table and talking. One thing leads to another and then along comes some hopefully brilliant idea :-)

Definitely while I'm laying in bed. Sometimes in the shower... oh and sometimes while driving.

I usually get my somewhat good ideas while sitting in silence for 30 minutes. I do this every day and probably wouldn't be able to function anymore without it

All of the above for me. I don't know what it is about taking showers, but it's probably the most prolific place, especially when you calculate the numbers on how many ideas I got vs. spending time in the shower...

And yes, driving! Or walking. I never go anywhere without a notepad and pen.

Sitting still is trickier since when I get an idea I have to either interrupt the meditative process so I can write it down or risk losing the idea by the time I'm done.

Also READING! My mind comes up with amazing connections sometimes when I'm reading stuff.

My best ideas usually come after being exposed to smart people. I don't think its a coincidence that many of my best ideas and "ah ha" moments come within hours or days of spending time talking business / marketing with other smart people.

Heck, even just hanging around the WF I often see someone say something smart that triggers an idea in my head.

Ideas come up in random moments, but to really keep getting good ideas you must keep your brain trained.
Study, read, work hard, you're not getting any good ideas if your sitting on your couch all day.

Usually people that procrastinate a lot think that people who work a lot are crazy "how could they ever work like that? " , but they do not realise they are the ones missing out; it gives a deep sens of satisfaction having studied hard or having done something properly.

So to get good ideas get good information and work on the information every day, you will even feel better plus get the good ideas! win-win.

Many of my best ideas just popped into my head. Outta nowhere. But I also get them from reading. And I do lots of reading.

Many times I'll read something and the author will talk about or just mention some problem. And then I'll start thinking about a solution. My brain is always on autopilot with finding solutions. Then ideas start to roll in.

I usually get my best ideas in the morning as I'm waking up in bed. However, once when I was taking a college course I was having trouble figuring out what the teacher wanted. I kept getting c and d's and I'm an a student so it was buggin the heck out of me. Only 1 student in the class consistently got A's, so all the rest of us cornered him after class. He told us the only way he wrote his papers was to get drunk and then write them. So, I decided to try a little of it. I drank a wine cooler, wrote my next paper and got a B+. True story-LOL.

Its a bit of a process but here is how it goes:

I am always coming up with random ideas, so i write them down in my cell.

The thing is when I first have an idea I think its awesome regardless of whether or not it is actually good. So writing it down helps me make sure that I can come back and take a look at it a few days from now and look at it from a fresh perspective.

Sometimes at this point I think that this ideas is bad or not profitable enough or what not, but sometimes I find that I really like an idea and having the core of it written down helps me come up other ideas that make the main idea better.

So the idea develops and transforms into something a little better. Generally at this point I am either in love with this idea or I am obsessed with it. So I come back and take a look at it everyday and I start coming up with ways to make it better, more efficient, etc.

Usually a few days down the road this idea changes into a something that is a great and actionable idea that I can work with.

This is how some of my most profitable ventures started, some of which I still happily work on.

There is a Ted Video by Steven Jhonson, best selling author of 6 books including "Where Good Ideas Come From", that talks about how contrary to popular belief great ideas are not things that people suddenly come up with but instead things that slowly brew in the back of our minds in bits and pieces and suddenly all of it falls into place.

I go for a walk outside. I walk for 30 minutes, then come back inside the house refreshed and ready to start marketing. When new ideas come, i immediately write them down, and post-it (sticky pad) on my laptop.
