Matching the Medium To the Market

I have a question.

From a marketer's perspective, everybody wants a slice of every pie, right?

I mean - a bunch of Facebook pages, a Twitter account (or several), then throw in Pinterest and Google + and why not LinkedIn too?

Now, I don't know about you, but as a single person business, I don't have time, (let alone energy), to keep all those plates spinning!

And then I was thinking - do my customers and prospective new customers really hang out in all those places?

I'm in the self help market. Now, there are a ton of inspiring images out that lift the spirit ... but I have a feeling that the majority of people interested in self help don't hang around on Pinterest as much as they might on Facebook!

Equally, they may well add a comment or two on Twitter, but you can chit-chat and ... in groups ... support each other on Facebook.

So I reckon that's where my market mostly hangs out.

Now, if you're in the dog grooming market, I'd be expecting to find my folks on Pinterest and probably Youtube most of the time. Who's going to tweet about brushing their dog's teeth? (Okay, yep. They will)

I know I'm generalising, and lots of people do hang out on all of those sites, but wouldn't it be wise, as a marketer, do try to do some figuring out of where most of your people are most of the time and stop trying to spread your energy in half a dozen different directions?

Just a thought!

Any comments?

Cheers,
Trevor.
