How I promote articles. 1000 unique visits per day.

This forum has helped me loads; Ive really wanted to give something back - but didn't feel I had anything to share. Ive just hit a little milestone, 1000 unique visits per day for the last few days (metrics: Google Analytics), so I thought I'd share my process.

Im in a niche not often talked about (Photoshop), Ive applied some of my learnings from WF, added in some tweaks relevant to my audience and increased my activity. Here's a look at the traffic spike experienced as a result:

(Wordpress Site Stats)

Yep. There is a direct relationship between content creation and traffic!! (In this case..)

Without further ado, here's the breakdown of how I did it...

Content Creation

My articles can take up to 4 days to produce.. they are behemoths. Our main traffic generators are visual Photoshop tutorials, complete with screen-caps, dialogues and instructions.

At times I create art and write the tutorial on WP simultaneously, at other times I produce the art and then write the tutorial retrospectively (using the layers in Photoshop to 'step backward' through the steps).

Some Warriors may feel this is a bit excessive, spending up to 4 days on one article - however these walkthroughs have tremendous viral / reposting value. Do a tutorial well enough, a lot of high traffic design blogs repost in their 'Top 10 Features'. In my instance, value always wins.

Optimizing Images

Being a visual site, we do get a fair bit of traffic via Google Images. I always have the major keywords (usually the post title) in the image file name and then a more descriptive phrase is used for 'Alternate Text'.

I don't usually bother with Caption or Description (aesthetic purposes).

Wordpress Post Optimization

I use 'All in One SEO' plugin to optimize my post. I get a great feeling from this plugin, been using it a while and it really does the trick for me.

Ive become more adept at tailoring my post titles with keywords in mind, however it isn't the be all and end all for me. Using All in One Seo, I input longer description and keywords, as well as porting the keywords into the tags section.

That's pretty much it. This step is very important and I never skip it.

Submit Tutorial to 'Tutorial Index' Page

Within our site, we have a 'Tutorial Index' page, where viewers can easily navigate to what they want by going to the required section.

Each new tutorial submission is added to this page as soon as it's done.

Twitter

My Twitter strategy consists of two main accounts, personal and SurrealPSD. Prior to a tutorial submission, I usually build up a little anticipation by releasing 'work in progress' images and little teasers.

Once live, I get the word out on my personal and site accounts. Hootsuite is used to manage the multiple twitter accounts, however I haven't touched upon it's full functionality yet.

Google +1

Google+ is a sleeping giant. Even though I don't participate on there - I always use the +1 button on my posts, using personal and site Google accounts. It's also a very quick way to syndicate my content right across to G+ as clicking the button allows you to repost over there.

DeviantArt

DeviantArt is my biggest traffic source so far. Im extremely active on there, I post and comment often. Aside from this factor Im also an ex-gallery moderator
and senior admin of a massive range of groups.

I post the image file, add description with link to the tutorial and always fill in the tags. Post something on there that captures peoples imagination, and the traffic goes insane.

Tutorialized, Pixel2Life & Good-Tutorials

Submitting my tutorials to these aggregate sites is fairly new to me, however once I saw their referral traffic - I immediately ported all my relevant content across. This is particularly responsible for my recent traffic jump.

Thumbnails, descriptions and links are created for my new tutorial, then submitted for approval.

The good thing about this form of syndication, is that a lot of other aggregate sites and design blogs cruise these directories for fresh content. If the content is of high enough quality, a lot of others will include them in their compilations or features.

Facebook

I hate Facebook and avoid whenever possible. Fortunately I have a buddy who runs the site fanpage - so that's how our content gets ported over there

More Content

I increased my tutorial output from one a month, to once a week - Im certain that this increase of effort has really taken the site to the next level. Yes, these articles are extremely hard to do - but I have abundant proof that folks are enjoying it, and sharing with others.

This i
s encouraging and makes me want to write more.

Monetization

I have Google Adsense, and at present the results are.... underwhelming. Alas, I know you need much bigger traffic (probably in a more profitable niche) to make it good with Adsense. It is a good learning tool though.

Fortunately, my strategy is to release a premium video training packa
ge early next year.
Thanks to WF, I got into email list building, and Im getting a healthy number of subscribers. The site's sole advertising efforts will be directed toward this aim. With growth like this, Im quietly confident that it may turn out ok.

I hope some of you may find this post useful

Much respect

Conzz

    You know what I learned?

People will always pay for a shortcut. So if you have great tutorials that are really in-depth, then people will more than likely pay you for it because for them figuring it out is more difficult than parting with the money to have it laid out for you.

Awesome what you're doing. Keep going. I think your project will work out just fine. Congrats.

    Great post, thanks.

4 days for an article, that is dedication to quality content !

Good idea building the list, as you say adsense probably not great for this niche.

Also lots of other back end potential, folk that love photoshop might enjoy stuff like Trick Photography and Special Effects by Evan Sharboneau and other related products...

The beauty of all this, is that the metrics visually show how 'much' your getting back for your efforts. It's a good start for me, let's see if I can monetize this thing. Many thanks.

By the way Google has been acting lately, Im kinda glad I stuck with the 'long arduous' route Ive seen that CB product before - not quite the quality I'd like to promote, I aim to exceed that with my own. Always appreciate links and new ideas though, much appreciated

But tutorials sound awesome, I'm going to see how I can do that. My niche is mostly internet marketing, wordpress, social media, etc.

Gosh sometimes I wish I'd get into a niche less competitive, because everyone is doing exactly what I'm doing. But alas, it is what it is. Thanks for sharing, your strategy is awesome.

Social has been great leverage for me also. Tutorials are awesome, and the real 'grease' of the internet - it's a great thing getting an answer to your questions within seconds. You thought of Youtube as a traffic generation strategy?

Thanks for the comment. I'd definitely recommend looking into adding a '+1' onto your website. It's Google's baby, and Im pretty certain they're going to look upon those who use it favourably

I really do hear you on the adsense! Whilst Im building traffic, Im using the Adsense units as a tool to measure ad-placement efficiency on my site - so when I launch my own product, I have half a clue on what works and what doesn't

This is what I call a half syndication.

But still it will come down to your actual content (that needs to be killer) and also comes down to your marketing the articles.

If you do have a good articles, article marketing these days is how much effort you put into marketing them around in targeted blogs, forums, newsletters, ezines and all around the web.

Even if you have a good article, blasting them to the directories is not really being an article marketer these days, you need to put it infront of the right eyeballs. And you will see very good results....even if you sales copy is half crappy.

Good job and well done. There is lots of other stuff you can do to triple your results, but well done and keep going.

Great post Surreal. I am in similar business (magazine design) and your insight on how to drive traffic to your blog will be very helpful to me.

I am not active on DevianArt but I have accounts on similar sites (Creattica, Dribble).
Mine tutorials will not take 4 days to make but one whole day for shore, maybe more.
Have you thought about video tutorials?

It seems more popular these days and kind of more personal, since your voice is present.

    Thanks for the post.

Recently, I've been reading that bigger posts seem to do better in Google than your average 500 or so word blogposts.

Your post seems to back this up. It might because people stay on the page longer etc as Google is tracking that.

Either way, I'm thinking of knocking up an 2000 word post and see how that goes.

I think what your post shows is that if you give people something to click on and provide them with value they usually will. Good job.

However... personally, Im not a big fan of spending massive amounts of time on traffic generation, I prefer to pay for it and be done, but that is just me.

And I can second that this actually works as I do a similar thing myself though I always add some social bookmarking too and find that one in every three images I do this with will stick to google.

When I have seen people fail at this its because they go for niches that are not that important with images. So go for things that are very visiual such as photography, travel etc.

I also do it with my wedding site for wedding dresses. Now that one works like a dream.
