How many businesses do you run online?

Good thread idea... I personally like to have my hands in multiple niches. But... I don't pursue something new until the project I'm working on is up and running, mostly automated and producing the results I intended it to.

Personally I run 5 websites right now and they all bring me money from all different sources. I don't believe in having all my eggs in one basket. I do stay busy which is a good thing but I don't have too much work that I can't handle.

I agree 100% with you, but there should be balance in opinion, Maybe work on more than 1 thing but try not to get overwhelmed, its good you can manage 5 websites effectively

So I have 8 main niches/websites/pennames/lists, and so on. They all use the same business model of affiliate marketing, but they're separate, unrelated businesses, in a sense.

I also have a couple of other, smaller sites of a different business model, for which I don't even build lists (they're just a way of inflating my Amazon sales volumes with low-priced items, to make sure I qualify for the highest commission-levels on the other stuff that actually matters).

I never start off more than 2 different niches at the same time, though (and usually just one), because in the early stages when one puts in the most work for the least reward, it wouldn't be possible for me to divide my attention much further than that.

I think you mean "Thisiswhyimbroke" or something (often discussed here)?

One of mine is similar (but almost all lower-priced items). Another comprises book-reviews and CD reviews.

You already know that I'm not a "fit and proper person" for a discussion of the technical aspects of website design! But if you use Wordpress, you can readily buy ready-made sites for this sort of stuff, for next-to-nothing.

Book reviews, for someone who reads and writes a lot, are really easy to do, and with books and CD's from Amazon, when people like your recommendations they always come back and see what else you're recommending, so it builds up pretty easily. If I had more time/interest in it, I'd do a list as well (and probably should

).

Hi Pepper,

I'm afraid in this case "under reconstruction" is actually a euphemism for "disused".

I hadn't seen that page for a long time, myself.

That one's never been an Amazon review site, anyway. It was, at one time, a blog on which I used to publish occasional book and CD reviews for fun, years before I was even an Amazon affiliate (which I haven't been doing that for all that long). When I started with Amazon, I was actually intending at first to use that site for it, but because of the apparent obsession that some WF members seemed to have, at that time, for "tracking down" and publicizing my sites, I actually decided to do so more discreetly in a pen-name instead, which - with apologies - I don't disclose.

Understandably, it's not a domain-name I allow to expire, though, as you can see. I'm currently taking part in NaNoWriMo, and I thought I might even possibly decide to post the first chapter of my novel on it, at some point ...

... all of which was really just a long-winded of saying "Sorry I can't help you; please excuse me".

Four businesses:
- One main one off/online hobby (though I consider very serious) niche. (see my avatar for hint ) which had enable me to drop out of the corporate world and earn a living this past decade. (Sold recently and missed it!)
- Three little affiliate businesses - which now I'll have time to further develop them (creating my own products and setting up affiliate programs so others can sell for me.)
My wife is the artsy-type... I'm helping her to start her business - Thank You Pinterest!

@OP I have 6 active niche websites but focus my time on the 2 I see the most potential in, both short-term and long-term.

Both, really ... one tries to find a balance between the two. As an article marketer, I have to be able to write about the subject (which, for me, excludes anything terribly hi-tech, so I don't ever promote any "software products/services" at all). But equally it has to be a niche in which there'll always be several products available for me to promote, and one in which people spend money (that consideration doesn't exclude a lot, though).

OP, if I were to take your question on a one-man-team's standpoint, of course, I wouldn't start more than business at the same time. Once the first is on a somewhat or 100 percent stable state, I'll move to the next. When everything is well-established, I'll split my time in managing/monitoring these businesses' performance. If there's a pressing issue on one, I'll invest more time to that business.

However, since I am just one of the Help Desk Associates of Content Writing 360°, and if I were to assume that your question is on a company's standpoint, I would say that Content Writing 360° is starting more than just one business at the same time. Content Writing 360° is just one of the businesses of its main company, however. So there you go.

I never count how many I run at a given time :p

I don't put all my eggs into one basket, so yes, I run multiple sites, serve multiple niches...

Main reasons why I maintain multiple...

1.If one goes down, the other can go up...

2.Perspectives, opportunities change from one field of activity to the other, so I'm more likely to stumble upon a new opportunity...

3.In case multiple sites gain popularity, the profits multiply!

4.More sites, more projects, more experience, more prestige - even if you'd do it for free - these are all real projects and improve credibility, you gain professional experience.

5.Can experiment different marketing/SEO techniques without risking too much: I apply different types of strategies to each site!

6.More business partners can stumble upon my site through so many channels. The sites are like "fishnets for grabbing new opportunities"!

7.Sometimes it's good to link your sites together... 1-2 strong sites can pull lots of related sites... Of course, one has to do it wisely, not interconnecting everything (because of Penguin risks)

I've been working with offline clients for many years, but recently I have begun implementing strictly online business. Primarily publishing and Amazon stuff. Next year I will begin my entry into Media Buying. I am planning to get out of the offline stuff as it is client contact demanding. I want to eliminate my need to interface with clients.

I currently have 5 publishing sites and 12 Amazon Affiliate Sites. Between these and the Media Buying Game I will have 3 business models working for me and won't have to pick up the phone to call anyone!

By the end of next year I will have my new models completed and be doing business from my Bass boat while reeling in a big one!

I need variety for many reasons.

First, to keep my sanity, as I get bored doing or working on the same thing over and over.
So, I manage almost all my clients websites, for a monthly fee.

Then, I write the copy for and run my own niche sites, some featuring my own non-im products, and a few affiliate offers. This part I've been doing since 2005.

Then I work with individual local clients, and lately, national clients too. I write their ads and provide marketing counsel....in some cases attending on-site meetings with their marketing and senior staff. ( I like face time with people, as I find pure internet marketing way too isolating) This, was for years, my only business.

Finally, I now sell offline consultant products and coaching on the Warrior Forum, which you may have heard of :-) That involves research, product development, list management and sales/support.

I enjoy moving from project to project, and having the freedom to decide what to go deeper with and what to put aside. So, you could say I can't sit still and can't be bored.

My number always varies. I guess I'm a part time flipper... I develop them, nurture and grow them for a year or two, get bored with them and then sell them off to competitors or other interested parties. I sold all but one of my sites at the beginning of the year and took the summer off to go play in the woods.

But I did pick up a nice little brandable domain last week (inspired by my stay at the WF) that I have just started developing. I believe I am going to use it for some case studies in various aspects of Internet marketing. Who knows, I may keep this one for awhile... or not

I second Bruce. When you work from home, you have to find ways to break the monotony, and if you TRULY time manage appropriately you will have time for more than one site/niche, depending on what you're working on. It really does keep you sane! Some nitty gritty niches will suck the life out of you regardless of how interested in them you could be. It's also just generally a safe business practice.

The great part, in my opinion, is that once you put all the work into getting the site up and running.

Which is a lot of work. I can concentrate on driving traffic to that site.

I don't believe in having all my eggs in one basket but I don't want to spread myself too thin and try and have 100s of projects on the go either, for me it's about finding a balance. A few of my projects are automated or outsourced so require little work but there's about 5 that I'm working on at the moment.

Being a simple kind of guy, I just have one business. It's an article syndication and online/offline marketing machine selling affiliate products in 68 niches from networks such as Clickbank, Amazon, Shareasale, Linkshare, CJ, etc. Mostly all I do is delegate.

have several, but most of it is outsourced, and income comes from 3 of our main niches, but all of them are in totally different niches, one really obscure one.

Where things really took off was years ago when several warriors helped with how I was outsourcing things. Leverage is key if you want to run several sites at once.

I have one business that can supply multiple niches and is based on selling products and a special service. I have no time to promote my business as I should, and no more money to invest on promotions, because I face a fierce competition. It’ very hard to deal with multiple activities at the same time.

I also spend a lot of time writing, but this is my best tool.

I call myself Mr. DBA.

I run over 300 eCommerce websites in rotation. About 100 in a "pending" status which means that they need to have products put on them. All sales are umbrella'd under a LLC.

Domain name flipping, and parking.

eCommerce SEO, I forward most of the work to my friend who mandates my employees to do tidbits of work but he outsources a lot of it.

I own a FTP 2.5D Browser game, am now working on 2 new games while at the same time setting myself up as a publisher rather than a developer. These will probably be the last 2 games I finance and build. My main focus has always been RMT within the games anyways.

My large eCommerce website, in a league of its own.

eCommerce Consultant, I mostly work with companies doing business on eBay and Amazon and want to branch off and start their own .Com - a lot of hand holding but I really enjoy working with businesses and knowing that I played a part in their growth. It's very cool.

eBooks (No WSO's yet!) - Back in "the day" - I followed the advice of a lot of people and tried to create multiple streams of income.

eBay/Amazon of course, if I assist others in it - what validation would I have without showing that I actually make money from it myself?

Interesting. Everyone got 24 hours a day, so as long as you are capable of running multiple businesses, it is of course the best option. Most rational, and many advantages to list.

I currently run 2 main + one side business. I inspire to be like you though.

I recently shifted my business model to something more sustainable and long-term, so these 2 main businesses I got currently are pretty new as well.

I will need them to be stable, before I'll move on to a new one.

However, I work full time online, and sometimes I hate the momentum break from "necessary delays" to my business. Good example is the programming and designing phrase which takes sooooooooo long, but it is a necessary wait as it takes time.

I usually spend alot of time from these delays on stupid time-wasting activities like gaming, or online poker.

It also really break the enthusiasm or momentum sometimes.

What do you guys do when your site is under design/programming phrase, and you basically can't do anything until they are up?

It is also exciting to own both online and offline businesses at the same time. You can have social interactions from your offline business, and while you're physically exhausted from the run you can turn to your online projects.

That's life ! Everything is very balanced. You won't have to sacrifice your sanity from the same old thing, and health quality can also be good (If everything managed well)

if you split your time between too many things no of them will be done right.

So foucs on one and if it is somehow conected with your primary business give it a go, but be the best at one.

You cannot be master at everything.

I do just this.

I don't know. If you only do one then you get back to the eggs and basket thing. I think you can focus on three or four and still manage quite well.

You don't have to be a master to own and run several successful businesses. I have no intention to be the #1 Laundry Mat Owner in the world but the basic principles I run my businesses on are what make me profitable which makes me successful. That's why the people you hire to run your businesses graduate with a "Masters Degree."

Four different areas of marketing. I don't something new until I have succeeded at a previous venture. That also gives me a good idea of what is required of my employees who then handle the day to day business. I think it's a good idea to have multiple streams of income. That way if one thing dries up, you still have other money coming in.
