How to create a product with no knowledge of what to create

I have been in the internet marketing niche for about 3.5 years, but I have only become serious in the make money niche in the last few months. I am looking to launch my first product, I am not sure what to create, either e-book, video series, or a combination of both. My knowledge is in internet marketing, affiliate marketing, etc.
What is the best approach to create a product? What steps should I do first? I am looking to expand my business, I have made little to no money so far online, mainly to not having a marketing budget, but I am working on that now. All suggestions would greatly help..

I'm afraid you're question may be a little too vague. Firstly the "make money" niche in itself is absolutely huge and has hundreds of sub-markets. For example it's like saying you want to go into the "eating food to stay alive" market rather than "gourmet vegan meals" market.

Again the type of product you create will depend on your specific market and the material you want to teach. If it's going to be highly practical/instructional videos usually work well. Where as if it's more theoretical and conceptual then written content is better.

PS I really like your avatar!

If you really want to create a product and you don't know what, think about what you like more and what you are good at. It is a great difference between e-books and video series.

Hire some one who can write well and ask them to write for you on various aspects of your niche. Once you begin, you will catch the flow of things.Thing with business is either do it or get it done. How your readers feels what you are offering determines the market for your product.

Well...if you're to make a product about Internet marketing and you have made "little to no money so far." Please don't make a guide or video on how to make money online.

If you're making it about what didn't work for you...then great! Don't BS people. They will see through it.

If you don't know what you're writing about you can either have someone else write it, research your topic, or choose another topic.

There are literally billions of topics to choose. Of those billions, there is certainly something you know enough about to create an ebook or video series. It does not have to be IM 24/7.

  • Lovely... So you are looking to create a product for the Make Money Online crowd, yet as per your own confession you have made no money online... Am I wrong in assuming that you are basically lookig to BS your potential customers? Am I the only one who thinks that you are basically looking to create a scam?

So, to answer your question: "how to create a product when you have no idea what to create?"... Answer: you dont.

      gdom,
If you haven't a clue when it comes to making money online, but you have a burning desire to become a success in Internet marketing, this is what you might consider...

As I tell you this, I'm assuming you have very little start up capital (shoestring budget).

      1. Find a hot topic or niche within Internet marketing -- all one has to do is search around this site to find hot topics.

      2. Become friends with a few good marketers within that niche, but make sure they already have a product or something of great value.

      4. Come up with a short list of questions concerning their niche -- these questions are that which you might have yourself or questions you had when you first got started.

      5. Contact your friendly marketers and if they will do a 15-30 minute interview with you over the telephone -- if you are concerned with long-distance fees, use Skype).

      6. In exchange for their time, let them know that at the end of each interview, you will spend a couple of minutes mentioning and pushing their product (call to action).

      7. Find a way to record these interviews onto your computer or find a free or inexpensive conference call service (sometimes experienced marketers already have an account with these services and will let you use it for the interview).

      8. Repeat this with 3-4 marketers and... now you have it -- Content for a product.

      9. Ask the marketer if he or she has a recent picture you can use. If you don't want to ask them for a pic, go online and do a search for a nice, recent picture or look them up on social sites for a recent pic there.

      10. Find a free web template online, get a domain name and hosting or if you're on the cheap and quick, get a blogger/online wordpress account and put your interviews on a hidden page within your new new website.

I could go on, but you get the idea.

      Some tips:

Make sure you do your best to make your site look good and on the professional side by using nice graphics, and stuff that may already be on your computer.

Also, if you want a better chance of getting the interview, make sure you are very polite to the person and let them know you have admiration for them and their service... be totally up-front and honest with them.

You might also want to become an affiliate and let them know that the interview is so you can help promote their product and/or service.

Find a cheap transcription service (here or elsewhere) and have the interview transcribed to a pdf.

When asking for an interview, don't go overboard with your enthusiasm.

Make it more about them and don't forget to mention that you want to help them push their products as well as create a product for yourself.

If you'd like, you could become an affiliate of their product and make money on both your new product and also off the affiliate page you will send them to on the call to action.

Bottom line is show the interviewee the highest respect, and thank them for the interview.

I could go into doing more professional stuff like doing this interview on a webinar, but it woud require a lot more investment on your part.

There are so many ways you can make money online, but like you mentioned, you are still new to all this, so ask the questions "you" want answers to and sell it to people who are on your same level.

Not only will you get a great learning experience for yourself, but you will have your first product.

This can become your entire product or can be just a primer for a membership or a bigger product down the road.

I'm actually doing something similar as a small part of my product but has nothing to do with IM.

Whatever your niche may be, this works.

It's a win-win for everyone... You, the interviewee, and your customer.

I wish you the best and hope you go on to do great things... Just remember that the more you help others succeed, the better chances that you will receive blessings in your life... I believe this to be one of the universal laws of success!

Now, get yourself motivated and go do something!

      Cheers,

      Steve

This is really helpful and awesome advice for new people! Thanks for sharing Steve!

For those of you who are just hammering the OP because he's new and not providing helpful, useful information, you need to remember that we all had to start somewhere and just because the OP hasn't made money, doesn't mean he can't have a product created or create a product and sell it.

As long as the product is accurate and is helpful why in the world would it not sell, and how can that be a scam? Other's have done exactly this! Good luck OP!

To be fair, I didn't see anyone suggest that?

What I see is many people advising the OP that if he hasn't made money, he shouldn't have a product created or create a product teaching people how to make money and sell it.

          That's totally different, surely

According to the Anonymous Affiliate: "Lovely... So you are looking to create a product for the Make Money Online crowd, yet as per your own confession you have made no money online... And that's what I was addressing Alexa. In fact you even "thanked" him.

Yes, indeed ... he specified "to create a product for the Make Money Online crowd". Exactly my point. It's right there, in the first line of what you quoted.

Nobody's suggesting that the OP shouldn't make a product about sailing, if he's a sailor, or about cooking, if he's a chef. Simply that he shouldn't make a product about making money online when he hasn't made any.

I'm fairly sure (without quite understanding where/why/how) that we must, at least to some extent, be talking at cross-purposes, here, because it seems to me to be simply irrefutable that someone who hasn't ever made any money online shouldn't be producing a product to teach other people how to make money online?!

Apologies if I've misunderstood you somewhere along the line. I was only pointing out that people were not criticising the OP "for wanting to make a product", but for wanting to make a product on a subject of which, by his own admission, he himself has no experience. Surely this isn't a contentious observation? You wouldn't want to buy a product about making money online produced by someone who hasn't made any, would you?

I can understand why so many folks are a little pissed or offended about someone wanting to teach how to make money online when he hasn't really made any himself... how dare he, right?!?

                  But here's the deal...

I believe that anyone who is genuine in needing help and asks for help should get helpful answers.

I see nothing wrong with gdom being honest and saying he has been trying to learn for 3 1/2 years and made a decision to go into the make money niche (it takes guts to admit that in a public forum).

I don't think he intended to scam anyone.

We all have to start somewhere and I remember how difficult it was when I was a noob.

Heck, in many ways, we are all still noobs, aren't we?

If we dare say that we know it all, then there is no reason to buy another product is there?

If anyone dares say they know it all, then they are just big, bold-faced liars, in my book... there is no such person anywhere -- not here, no where on Earth. No one knows "everything".

                  Most of us know NOTHING.

... and really, can you blame gdom for his honest inquiry?

He sees all these people here making money online and he wants to do the same... I can't blame him one bit for his decision to go into the make money online niche. It's a highly searched niche.

As far as wanting to teach others...

Listen, sometimes the best way to learn a craft is by doing your own research and teaching others as you learn. I see nothing wrong with his desires and he should be encouraged, not discouraged to do so.

The Warrior Forums is a place anyone should come to for help and not be turned away or discouraged.

Hats off to all the noobs out there who have the burning desire to "make it" like everyone else.

The big problem I see is that there are more bullshitters than not. There are tons of "fake-it-til-you-make-it" folks here. They're everywhere.

And what about all the folks here who sell PLR products that haven't a clue as to what it is they are selling? Should we also discourage them from selling PLR content when they have never even touched some of the niches they are selling?

At least someone has the courage to admit they are still learning... We should all be so honest.

Hats off to all noobs with the courage to go forward instead of sitting around and just dreaming about it, like so many out there.

We should all help one another... if we all do this, we'll all benefit and we'll all live in a better world.

Sorry to sound so philosophical, but that's just the way I see things and no one can take that away... No one.

For those who disagree with me... fine, that's your opinion and I respect you nevertheless.

You have to wait until you have more posts before you can give any thanks... not sure how many, but I think it might be 15-20.

Hang in there. You'll have more privileges before you know it.

FYI - I'm no expert marketer because I've spent most of my learning years in the copy writing arena, but I appreciate being labeled as "seasoned" anyway... my kids just call me "old man". LOL.

Create a product on the basis of you learn in 3.5 years. There are a lot of people who try to make money online by creating & selling MMO products.
My suggestion is first you find a way to make money online and once you started making money online then create a product/ebook/course to teach others make money online.
If you are not making money online how you can teach others to make money online.

Dude, seriously, starting your first product requires first what kind of product you're going to create. Ebook, membership site, amazon, kindle, etc. What is the product? What problems does it help your niche solve? IS there any demand for it? You must research to see if anybody even wants to buy it.

Then after you've discovered what it is you're going to launch as a product, you then need to know how to create sales funnels, autorespnder emails, squeeze pages, merchant accounts, marketing, copywriting, traffic, and the list goes on and on. Hope you realize that it is a big undertaking. Unless you want to sell a kindle ebook as a product, then you can make it happen easier.

Then get out of the MMO and IM "niches"! That's the single commonest mistake that beginners make, and the single commonest reason for failure among those going into internet marketing. That's probably why you've been involved for three and a half years without earning anything yet.

And now you're seriously asking how to create a product with no knowledge of what to create?

I'm not trying to be rude to you, but I thought April 1st had come round again terribly quickly, when I read your OP ...

But it's "knowledge" that's brought you no income, to speak of, during all that time? So how can you imagine that it could possibly be a good idea to produce your own product for those wanting to make money online?! Where's the successful experience whose benefits you can pass on to others?

Find something in your niche that generally interests you, then start doing as much research as you can. If you haven't been able to make money online yet, making an e-book about the pitfalls to avoid (as someone else pointed out) might be a good place to start. You should also probably look into other niches and try to find something that you actually have experience with.

If you really want to operate in the IM niche then what you want to do is pick from a list that looks something like this...

    - Traffic generation
    - Product creation
    - Affiliate marketing
    - Email marketing
    - Marketing using social networking
    - PLR
    - Paid advertising techniques that work
    - Article marketing
    - Video marketing
    - Making money as an Amazon affiliate
    - Etc...

Now you have two choices - tap into experts to help share their tips/techniques and strategies with you OR dig in an learn everything you can about this area AND THEN put some of this into action and share your results.

We've worked with people that have been successful with their products that have

    1. Correlated the tips/strategies from multiple experts
    2. Applied a set of steps and had some success themselves (even though they don't succeed at every part of IM, having success in one area is enough to get you started)
    3. Worked as part of a mastermind to produce a JV product where a small group collectively learn and share their strategies/results - this can work well as a launch point as well

I personally would sign-up to WarriorPlus.com, then look in the Affiliates Tab, and look at all the available offers.

Look for the product that made the most sales, and has a good price point.

Then create a product similar and make it better than the one that made lots of sales add your own twist to it, and do your best to outdo the one that made lots of sales.....

Thanks for all the feedback and yes creating a product without proper research or without haven't created results can be a problem.
My first objective is to work on list building, then maybe concentrate on affiliate marketing mostly (non-clickbank)
I have purchased different courses and I am attending live events to get a better understanding about network marketing.
I eventually do want to create a product. Should my concentrations be on affiliate marketing? Then go for product creations, or list building. When it a good time to create your own product? Is there a specific amount of experience in the make money niche that is needed. For me my concentrations are in list building, paid traffic, wordpress, and affiliate marketing for possible product ideas.
I am mainly seeing when a good time would be to consider creating a product. I am still working on building a list, working with affiliate promotions, and learning traffic methods. Yet still yet still have not generated results when it comes to making a comfortable income online. Thanks for the replies..

One idea is to think about your potential product in accordance with the lean startup principles/customer development process popular in the startup world and "start with the problem first." Do keyword research, forum research, email people interested in your niche and figure out what kind of things they want help with. Then create a product (informational, software, whatever) around that.

Why is it that when people think of Internet Marketing they automatically assume it HAS to be in the "Make Money Online" space? Like, do people really think they are NOT an internet marketer if they go into something they are passionate about?

    Sheesh!

PS. You would be doing a great disservice to people who bought your product or to those who even looked at your sales page and wasted their time.

PPS. And to say you have been in the Make Money Niche for 3.5 years... like come on who are you kidding? Floating around dabbling in this or that does not qualify you to be "IN" any niche.

The best approach to create a product is by finding a big market need and filling it. You must launch a great product in a booming market to create massive cash flow. But that alone is not enough. Without having sufficient passion to market this product you will die in the desert.

I think one of the better option is to launch a low priced information product that you will market for $7 to $20. You use this product to build a high quality customer list which you will later on monetize by recommending more of your products and/or offer coaching programs.

Make sure that you do not fall into the trap of spending too much time posting on forums without having a clear game plan in placed.

The first step is to create a great product based don your targeted market. I´d suggest to write a short report, maybe under 10,000 word and market it for $10,00. Your goal is to generate a couple hundred sales from this product within the first 1 to 3 months.

Set up your email campaigns (future promotions) and opt-in page before you market the product. You don´t want to miss out on customer lists.

If you manage to get break even with this promotion, you actually make a hell of a lot of money in the long term, and that money comes from selling more informational products and also coaching programs. Don´t be too focused on the initial sale, because it doesn´t really matter. As long as you get break even, you can always reinvest into marketing this thing. I advice you to use the WSO section to do so.

Build a list consisting of 500 to 1000 buyers, and you don´t need to worry about money again.

Why have you been operating in the "internet marketing" niche if you haven't been making any money? Your knowledge is NOT in internet marketing, it's in failing.

I dont suggest you go into the "make money online" niche. That's an even tougher niche to sell in than "internet marketing". Go in a niche (how to grow red roses at home, etc), and create backend products for it.
