its all about advertising. When you go to get the necessities you pass many things that jump out at you and make you grab them. Thats how stores make money

    Exactly!

Each of us, in their own business, needs to incorporate that strategy. Dan Kennedy hangs a big sign "BUT IT WON'T WORK IN MY BUSINESS".

The trick is to use that strategy in your own business, modified for your market and angle....

Is this about up-sells and cross-sells?

We already have our wallets out because we have decided to buy the milk.

And on the way to the milk, we are offered special deals and reminders about other products.

        Exactly!

Upsells, crosssells... and making the buyer go through the "store" until the milk display on the furthest side of the store in the back!

and is the milk put at eye level? even think about that?

See this on Wal*Mart and the way the shelves are set up:

the tricky part is not using it in in places where it will cost you sales....

but, say, if you offer a free product.... why isn't there an upsell? if not before the opt in... why not afterward on the opt in confirmation page?

The only key for you to get the milk is the proper marketing and advertising of your product. Once the people knows that you're offering like a freebies or you had some testimonial/persons who have tried and prove that your product is good, it is impossible that you can't get more sales.
