Computers are DEAD. Long live tablets!

Hi guys,

I went computer shopping at the weekend.

Here's what I saw in PC World:
  • Tablets (iPads, iPad clones,Kindles) - huge crowds in these aisles, I could barely get to see the products, much less try them out. Teenage girls are dreaming of iPads in their Christmas sacks this year .
  • Laptops - a bit of interest.
  • Desktop PC's - only tumbleweed in this aisle !
What does this mean for us? It means that we all need to be focusing our efforts on monetising tablets. The public has spoken - the future of the Internet is the tablet .

Also mobile of course, but most people buy mobile phones in smaller stores.

And if you trade stocks, short Microsoft and Dell, long Apple and Amazon!

The reason you saw no one in the PC aisle is because most people already have a PC. PCs will be around for quite some time because in most cases a tablet won't cut it for serious day to day work.

Exactly, some folks actually have work to do (desktops), not just email, games, videos.

      Bull's eye!
I'd like to see a tablet run my current setup...4 monitors, 2TB HD, 24GB RAM, etc.

It's probably unnecessary for someone who's just doing business online. But my computer is mostly for trading...and some occasional graphic design work.

I think tablets are going to take over the world very soon.

I'm just waiting on the iPad adding a proper operating system, lots of memory, storage space, and a proper keyboard attachment.

      Then goodbye laptops, hello tablets.

You do realise you've just described a laptop, but in separate pieces that you have to connect together? Why not just get a laptop?

Of course I know what I described.

Wouldn't you like to snap your laptop in two when you're just sitting down and browsing the web?

If it's a choice between snapping it in two or not, why would you possible say no?

Although I am using a Pc to write this, i have to admit that this age is different from what once was!!!!! I love the smell of new technology, but at times i cant help that nostalgic feeling that i get when i see a gameboy color or a t.v with a hatchback!!!! But the more technology changes the more our lives are more manipulated!!! its so real that its unreal what phones, tablets and applications can do!!!!! and i love to hate it!!!!!!

I feel so passionately about this I've actually made a little doodle explaining why:

In the sitting down scenario you either need to twist your neck with a 90 degree downwards viewing angle, raise your legs in the air like a prostitute to get a comparable angle with a laptop or hold out the screen in front of you and go back to either position a/b when you want to type/interact with two hands.

For sitting at a desk with a tablet you're either back to straining your neck of using some sort of little music stand to prop up the tablet.

Seriously I don't get why people like these things....

You can't just invent ways to hold a tablet and use that as your reason.

And no offense, but you've already proven you don't know anything when it comes to this sort of thing.

I couldn't agree with you more. When I first heard about the release of the iPad I was laughing my head off. I thought "I can't wait for this stupid piece of S#*t to fail". Then suddenly a new industry was born, everyone was carrying about these retarded tablets that looked like training phones for babies and old people. It really goes to show you slap an apple badge on ANYTHING and it will become an overnight success.

No offence taken! I'm enjoying the discussion and I know you're not being malicious .

I didn't invent anything I regularly see people with their legs up to support their tablets on their thighs at a reasonable eye level/angle. In addition a few of my friends have covers that turn into triangular stands so that the tablet can be used at a reasonable angle on a flat surface like a desk.

Also you didn't actually deny my claims or give any corrections about the way people need to hold a tablet vs a laptop. You simply criticised them.

Additionally I thought the iPad would fail because it solves a problem that doesn't exist. I guess I know nothing about consumer electronics buyers and have been proven wrong on the subject of what people will actually buy. But that does not mean to say what people buy is actually what is best/most useful

Look at betamax vs vhs and many other format battles where the better quality format lost due to branding and consumer trends.

I can tell you're an avid apple fan and that is fine, but I think it is this brand loyalty that turned the iPad into a "revolutionary" device. Tablets had been around for 10 years before the iPad, but slap an apple badge on it and it's an overnight success.

I have an Acer laptop, Creative mp3, and I don't even have a phone. I'm not an Apple fan, yet.

You tell me where those people are with their legs up at 45deg angles and I'll kick the legs out from under their chairs.

I don't think we'll ever come to any sort of conclusion. You are very set in your ways, and I'm set in mine.

Don't tell anyone, but I didn't think I'd ever buy one either.

Haha I'll be sure to get straight on the forum next time I see someone using the leg stand method.

I think you're right we'll probably not come to agreement on this specific issue, but I'm sure there'll be other areas we're more similar in :p

        A "tablet" is a standalone.

If you introduce a keyboard (certainly one of equal size to the tablet) it then becomes a hybrid.

Call it what you want. They're doing a good job of calling the iPad a tablet at the moment. Microsoft seems to think their Surface is also a tablet.

I think you misunderstood me because I said the word 'snap' to make it easier to understand.

I think in the future a tablet will be a standalone device with the keyboard being an extra.

Perhaps this Windows 7 Home Premium tablet with an Intel Core i5 will work? Granted, it's not an iPad, but it definitely runs most stuff that's out there . . . as long as you can work with the hard drive size. You can always pick up a bluetooth keyboard to use with it.

        Newegg.com - SAMSUNG Series 7 XE700T1A-A01US 11.6-inch Slate

Just an example of a tablet that can really compute. (No affiliate link, just a product example.) Granted, it has a 64gb hard drive (SSD), but it's workable, no? I read someplace that there's a model out there with 128gb SSD, but I'm not sure on that.

PCs will never be dead. Neither for gamers nor for professionals/advanced users.

Besides, without a proper file manager the iPad can't never be your only device. How will you email files, plain regular files?

My PC is worth close to 6 grands and I spend a few grands on my PC and gadgets every year. And by the way, I have an iPad 3 but I don't have a pappy

And don't forget about web design, software/app development, video editing, audio editing, and graphics/photo editing... each of which are tasks that millions of professionals take part in every day. And each of which are tasks that are either impossible or highly impractical to perform on a tablet.

In other words... everything that you read and interact with on a tablet... was created on a desktop computer.

This is what I was going to say.

I used to do video editing and 3D modeling using Maya, and there is no way that a tablet would have the processing power to render that stuff.

And not only that but if you think about all the other varieties of businesses that will still continue to use the desktop pc.

Maybe instead of claiming that Computers are dead the OP would have done better to notice who it was that was in that line up showing interest in those tablets

That would have given them an idea of the tablet's target market.

Another thing the OP could have done was talk to the sales people and ask who do they usually sell their tablets to, and who still buys desktop computers.

In other words it was an opportunity to gather more information, instead of just making an assumption.

Tablets just like Apple devices are rather pointless things.
Fine if you want to do a bit of surfing or rotate your photographs, but useless if you want to do any programming, serious development or run application software.

PC - Powerful and dependable workhorse (depending on which PC you have) to get all kinds of tasks accomplished, to play games, etc.

Laptop - Powerful workhorse to get things done in a mobile capacity (depending on which laptop you have)... but limited due to battery consumption.

Tablet - Fun entertainment device (watching movies, videos, playing app based games, etc.) and to take care of minor tasks (note taking, emailing, browsing the internet, etc.).

Smartphone - The obvious reasons and to take care of minor tasks.

Bottom line, all 4 common technology devices all have their place. I own a device in all 4 categories, and I use them all for what their primary use is for.

For some consumers, maybe all they need is a tablet or a laptop, etc., but I can't see tablets becoming a primary computing device. Maybe in the future?

I would have to agree. This post pretty much sums up why all these gadgets/equipment are actually here to stay. A lot of people are discrediting the ever-dependable PC because they can actually take care of their usual tasks using the three smaller equipment. They can carry a laptop/notebook while on travel for heavy usage. For simple gaming, email, and social networking, the smartphone and the tablet will do.

You may want to do your work on smaller screens but to me, nothing beats the PC. Just my two cents.

It depends what your business entails.

If it has anything to do with social media and using social networking then the iPad wins hands down for speed and simplicity over a PC/Laptop/Netbook.

Just my personal opinion but its much more fun sometimes to do all that on your iPad than the PC but then you might not have access to some of the tools or files on your iPad that you might have on your PC but then that's what a cloud server and a VPS is for. So you can access them on the iPad. Good old Steve he was the boy.

This. When we designed the interface that is now sitting on every Windows 8 desktop (back in 2008), it was designed as a portable interface to use for staying in touch and being aware of things while away from your desktop, where you would return later. Getting the actual work done was something you did at, you guessed it, a PC.

I love my Windows 8, and I love the Metro interface - but I get my work done on the desktop.

I do just about everything I need to off my new iPad .. (just wanted to get the branding right there.).

Downloading files is a bit of a pain, and flash player stuff too, I admit. But the add-on apps that are now available seem to take care of so many additional tasks! A tablet is the only way to good online health. (Ha ha).

        Case study:

I bought an iPad 1 in January 2011 as a replacement for a Panasonic Toughbook.

During the next 18 months I established a company that will do very well this year and hopefully even better next year.

I at least partly built the company with an iPad, I certainly run the majority of it from my ipad and have found ways of doing almost any task you can with a laptop using it.

It allows me near seamless contact with any number of international clients and outsourcers, my office and my family.

I can control a network of 1000+ websites with it from the cabin on the plane.
It helps me get to the next presentation in more ways than 1.

Nothing looks quite like walking into a boardroom with nothing but an iPad and an iPhone.
Plug the iPhone into the projection system, run keynote and control it effortlessly with an iPad. It shows me the notes I've made on my ipad but not their screen.

This is a tool 100% built to make business easier.

It lasts all day, is lightweight, looks stylish and does all the above and more.

Everyone in my office has an iPad, my wife has an iPad and the kids, the lucky bast**ds will all have iPads at Christmas, albeit mini ones.

I will admit there is still a place for the humble PC, games, design work, well some of it, large file transfers, but that will come.

I would suggest anyone forgo their inhibitions and preconceptions and embrace the tablet because not only is it here to stay, it really can help you, if you want it too.

Apple tablets operate exactly like their phones and iPods so they're super easy to pick up, the ecosystem is very safe, chocked with every application you could want for between 99c and $24.99.

I have no knowledge of Android devices, but my friend likes them.

I wrote this post on it.

I think tablets are the most hyped up piece of c#"p so far this century!

All they really are just giant mobile phones with nothing extra to offer a phone user other than a larger screen.

Whenever I walk past a coffee shop and see people using trying to look trendy just because they are using a tablet, i always laugh to myself because I think they look so ridiculous.

They kind of remind me of a comedy show i've seen (can't remember the name) where a guy would start shouting on this gigantic phone in a public place every week.:p

If a small unknown company released the ipad first, they would probably be laughed off the high street in a matter of weeks.

That's the power of great marketing, Almost anything can be sold.

I don't think anybody has run a serious business using tablets and mobile devices. You can't perform many things with tablets because their processing power is limited. You can't perform word processing or programming using tablets because doing so is uncomfortable and cumbersome. Same with gaming.

I prefer my desktop PC with a widescreen LCD screen. I use tablets but only for entertainment and social networking. It's useless for business work. Who wants to get their work interrupted because they have to recharge their tablets?

  • I do not think that PCs are going to go away.

However, we can not ignore that more and more people are going to be spending time on their tablets and on their mobile devises.

Although I love my laptop, I always have my Mobile phone with me and probably spend five times more time on my mobile phone than I do on my Mac. I also have a crappy mobile phone, which furthers the argument.

I don't think it is any secret that more wealth is going to be created by those who master mobile and the tablet than those who just focus on PC (or MAC, sorry I had to slip that in).

You'd be surprised no doubt if you had one how much you could incorporate your business duties into it. Example - if you spend a lot of time at the PC doing tasks you could probably do on the iPad either directly or through a VPS using one of the many free RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol) apps then you are not restricted to being in one place at one time and can save on electric too.

I think it somewhat has to do with our impatient culture. We want instant on, instant loading, no lag or sluggishness. Tablets care for this implusive nature.

Once SSDs and RAM are improved... and laptops are seemless in their loading of apps and the OS then people will gravitate towards laptops again. Or maybe I know nothing and we will all be wearing Google Glass by then.

Why not have all three? A tablet is great for snuggling under a blanket and browsing the Web. A laptop lets me take my work to the beach and still keep up with my online world. My one gripe is that I have to replace it too often. My PC is king, and I can't imagine every going without it. If I had to choose only one device, my PC would win, hands down.

      I agree!

I worked in the medical field for years and I honestly can't see all the computers there being replaced by tablets from medical receptionists to medical billers, and upwards. Especially in all of the hospital's satellite offices that are all connected. Tablets just couldn't cut it, I'm afraid.

If you want something more portable than a PC or laptop why not just get a Netbook.
I use them in hotels and they give me the power of a PC, laptop in a smaller device.
I can run all the software I need for IM and beyond.
No need to look at under performing tablets.

    Wow, lots of thoughts here.

Of course PC's aren't dead, and servers will have to be around for a long time.

But the point is, you need to base your business decisions on what OTHER PEOPLE are buying, and the majority don't seem to be buying PC's anymore.

I'm also a software developer, and of course I need a PC.

    Or do I?

My 11yo niece is really good at creating content on her iPad. In fact she uses it for school (nearly every child has one at the school). If you're blogging you could easily do that on a tablet (with maybe an external keyboard for longer articles).

I also do more work on the cloud. I used to use the SQL Server desktop client software, now I mostly use MySQL's web based front end. I could easily do that on any type of device.

And as for gaming, well iPad games are hugely popular of course, but personally I'm a PlayStation gamer.

Many people don't buy PCs anymore because they can do their stuff on tablets or smartphones: Check emails, check facebook, surf the net, keep in contact with friends, watch films, listen to music, take pictures, shoot some videos and play simple games.
Not everybody has a job that requires a "real" computer. Some are just satisfied with the activities mentioned above. People who only do this don't need a PC or laptop.

The PC will never go away, but sales could go down.
A PC+ big monitor is for serious work and running complex software. I use it also for video editing and flight simulations. Thats where You need the power of a PC!

In my opinion the biggest advantage of a tablet is mobility. Its easier to use and carry while travelling. And I use it as a navigation device as well.
It combines a car gps, digital photo camera, digital video camera and outdoor GPS all in one. Normally I would have bought these as separate devices. As navigation devices, tablets are easier to handle than netbooks or laptops where You would have to add and carry around another exterior GPS as well.

Not sure why people think you can't actually run a business from a tablet. Maybe its because they don't setup their business to be run that way?

I probably have about as many irons in the internet business fire as most anyone, and i find it is actually easier to run my business from my ipad.

This summer I went about 3 months never touching a pc or laptop. just an iphone and ipad.

I can do most graphic editing (the major stuff is outsourced anyway), create pdf's, type damn near as fast on the screen as a keyboard, work and track developers easily, handle email and support desk stuff, handle all the payment stuff you can think of and much more.

In fact, many of the tasks are actually easier to do on my ipad than on a pc.

I will admit though it took me about 1 year to find and organize all the apps and services to make that all possible though.

I think this is the main reason. I'm actually setting up my business to run it from a tablet, though I'll probably have a laptop as well.

The only thing missing I've found, as a blogger, is the ability to save your tablet with something like Carbonite.

well, for me, all my "work" is in the cloud on places like dropbox and stuff. That gives me backups and allows me to work from any where there is a tablet, pc, laptop, iphone...damn near anything...lol

I know Dropbox is great. It was more for secondary backups. I was speaking to someone from Box.com and they assured me it works on an iPap.

Not that it matters if you have a laptop or desktop anyway, because things like Carbonite will work as long as the iPad isn't the only thing you have.

oh yes, box.net works great on ipad too. but Dropbox seems to be integrated into more of the apps to work more seamlessly. i use several services to make sure nothing is every gone.

my ipad is always backed up to DR, box, and idrive, last pass for ipad keeps all my logins synced with my pc/laptop (which i never use) and then of course itunes/icloud keeps the apps all synced up.

Wow, David. I'd love to watch your work one day. I am so attached to my PC that I can't even entertain the thought of working without it. I grew up typing on a keyboard and type about 95% by touch only. If the younger generations are growing up on their iPads and using that typing platform, then that's probably what they'll be used to when doing their own things later on. You should tell me which apps you find the most essential.

I have been using ONLY an iPad 3 for the past 6 Months now to work, not even a phone (I have skype on it). Though not by choice!

It's great for many things. The portability and longer battery life. The apps etc.

I've written 2 80 page Ebooks on my ipad. No external keyboard. Yes it's a lot slower to type with only 1 finger, though I've gotten pretty fast at it now actually. I used to write very long emails on my iPhone.

Though often it's simply frustrating that I can't download certain things, that I can't use software I want to use and others are using, that many people's videos (although so stupid) are still not mobile friendly when it doesn't take anymore time to choose a mobile friendly format instead, and I have to outsource a lot of work like design and tech stuff etc.

Outsourcing is ok, though often I just want to do something myself cause I know what I want and how I want it to look and it wouldn't take me long. Instead I have to go back and forth with outsourcers on revisions etc.

I've customized and rewritten things like plugins while standing at the Apple store to use their computers for it.

Tablets are great if they're not your only device. Wish I had gotten an 11" Air instead!

OP's post is sort of funny..short Microsoft? Right, with Win8 and the new Tablets coming out won't be a financial win for the company? lol.

General consumer is moving more towards having mobility in their pocket moreso these days. But BIG business is driving the need for, and access to, servers/desktops/enterprise solutions. "PC's" aren't going anywhere.

My profession is design and there is no way you'd ever see me doing my job on my laptop unless my main desktop happened to fail.

Desktop publishing houses (i.e the press) are composed mostly of desktop PC's hooked to large / speciality monitors. That's just one example.

Whilst desks exist, whilst syncronization with laptops / tablets exists (for people to be able to take their work away from the desk) the desktop PC isn't going anywhere. It's the father that spawned all gadgetery children.

I do have a smartphone that I do use to check on things when I'm not near my desktop. But it will never replace my desktop or laptop. At least for me it won't.

People are getting really defensive about PC's being dead.

Didn't the "long live tablets" part make you realize he wasn't saying there would be no PCs left in the entire world?

It's because whether you like it or not, that's the reality.

          What ARE you talking about?

The guy, let's call him a marketer, used a headline to speak about how tablets are becoming popular.

And all I see are people taking it far too seriously, like he was personally going to set fire to every PC in the world.

    A PC is a PC.

    A tablet = tablet.

It will not be dead nor replacing each other.

Thread's title: Computers are DEAD. Long live tablets!

I just realized that even tables are Computers. The thread title is confusing.

Well, we just shared our thoughts about this and we are entitled to our own opinions.

A tablet computer, or simply tablet, is a mobile computer, larger than a mobile phone or personal digital assistant, integrated into a flat touch screen and primarily operated by touching the screen and instead of using a physical keyboard it often uses an onscreen virtual keyboard.

A tablet computer may be connected to a keyboard with a wireless link or a USB port. Convertible notebook computers have an integrated keyboard that can be hidden by a swivel joint or slide joint, exposing only the screen for touch operation. Hybrids have a detachable keyboard so that the touch screen can be used as a stand-alone tablet. Booklets include dual-touchscreens, and can be used as a notebook by displaying a virtual keyboard in one of them.

    In my house we have:

2 Desktops - used for business. Have 26 inch screens and one doubles as a TV in my office. Also watch Netflix on it.

2 Laptops - Wife and son's computers. They love them for portability and surfing. Nice big screens and KEYBOARDS.

2 Android Tablets. I would never use these for business. We use them for e-readers, watching Netflix or surfing in bed and the odd email. I could never use this thing for anything serious.

3 Android Smartphones. Used for what smartphones are used for. Would never try to do business on these things other than the odd email and small tasks on the go.

1 Netbook - My portable business center.

So in my opinion, tablets are just toys. People like toys but they have their limitations. Although the Surface tablet is trying to bridge the gap.

Computers will be around for a long time. People aren't buying them much now because most already have one or several. My Desktops are five years old and I see no need to replace them yet. My netbook is three years old. My Tablets are two years old. Laptops are one year old. None will be replaced anytime soon.

This is super true for me as well . Cann't agree more to it.

      1) Office : We run around with a tablet like a headless chicken ( Tandoori Chicken type )
      2) Work Computer: Hard wired desktop pc for heavy duty network work.
      3) Home computers: Running multiple application for me and others at home.
      4) Tablet : Young ones playing with it. i.e. talking tom type play.
      5) In the journey: I am wasting my time on a tablet and showing off... :p
      6) Laptop: Business meeting and warriorforum learning.
      7) Tablet: to start any VPS server activity remotely. ( Only if I am out and about with my mates and couldn't complete the work in office)
      8) Still like my destop as I can do a lot of work.

      Long live the desktop.

Tablets are still computers, right? But in a different form. Yup, they're different from desktops. The thing is the way desktops and laptops work is basically the same. So if the desktops are gone, we still have the laptops to think about.

I've got two "laptops" - one is an ASUS Republic gaming laptop (~2 years old, but still packs a punch with 8gb of RAM, 2gb graphics, quad core processor etc)
And I've also got an ASUS transformer tablet with docking keyboard.

Now the tablet kicks ass for traveling, watching YouTube videos with its HD screen, emails, basic web browsing etc.

However, it just cannot match the power and functionality of my big laptop for productivity and Internet marketing tasks.

I can't see tablets killing laptops in our field quite yet!

    Computers are dead? NEVER!

Give me my 27" iMac or 13.3" MBA any day of the week over a tablet. Nothing beats point and click with a real mouse, and nothing beats fast typing on a proper keyboard that can actually keep pace with my input speed!

I have a tablet, it has now been passed to the Mrs who uses it in bed to check her bank, look on facebook etc.

I think you are very premature my friend!

Tablets are the solution to all of your mobile computing and entertainment needs....

...until you actually BUY a tablet!

Tablets are extremely limited and are not going to replace the computer anytime soon. For basic tasks and for mobile computing needs, it will definitely put up some stiff competition.

However, computers are and will remain to be needed. Tablets will trail for quite a bit of time.

Here's a possibility I don't think I've seen mentioned... Tablets could well end up driving sales of laptops and desktop systems to people who might otherwise not have bothered.

Tablets aren't as threatening to technophobes or people with no computer experience. They're great intro devices. If they don't fix some of the limitations, though, a lot of those people are going to want more. And the price difference isn't large enough any more to stop them from buying a laptop or netbook or desktop system to get it.

If you look at it as a hybrid option, you get into some fun possibilities. Still, copying and pasting are a pain on the iPad, and I can't imagine trying to do anything that required fine pointer control with a touchscreen interface.

As far as netbooks... The comments about RAM and SSDs are spot on. The power issue is just a matter of spending a bit more for a longer life battery. I have an ASUS netbook that will last 10+ hours on a charge under normal work conditions.

A friend tells me that SDHC cards with 128 gig capacity are due out soon, with 256 gigs not far behind. That will change the way laptops and netbooks are used by a lot of people.

At the moment, you can get a 32 gig Class 10 microSD card for under $25. That means I can carry backups of critical business files in my phone. Or download big stuff from Dropbox, as needed. That changes things. Think about what happens when that goes to 256 gigs, and you can pop one of those babies into a tablet...

    For all the tablet haters,

There is not a single thing I need to do to make money in the IM field that I can't do from my ipad.

The very few tasks that need to get done that require some pc only software are very easily outsourced.

most who don't think tablets are good for work have never spent the time to both setup their business to run from a mobile location via a tablet and actually learn to use their tablet effectively.

in fact earlier today, i typed a few responses to WF threads with my ipad (in a water proof case that floats) actually in a pool having drinks at a swim up bar. Try that with a pc.

By your own admission though, you aren't working. You are at a bar in a pool enjoying life.

There's no denying that a tablet can be used for giving instructions to PA's (who probably use desktops to do your work) and typing a few sentences into a forum...

I understand where you're coming from. Obviously you need a desktop to do your stuff.

I think I'm coming at it as someone who plans to be a digital nomad. If I had a home I would obviously use a Mac. It's a lot easier to carry a tablet around the world.

        sort of....

I have the ability to personally scale servers up and down via my tablet.

I write / send / manage email lists that are in the xxxk range.

I handle the vast majority of the financial side of my business via tablet. This includes refunds, tracking affiliate commissions, paying everyone who is supposed to be paid.

I handle all my "real mail" via a service that scans it all into an online account which i manage almost exclusively from an ipad app.

i make and send screenshots to help developers.

the ebook in my sig was 90%+ written / edited / constructed on my ipad. the small amount that wasn't had nothing to do with necessity it just so happened that i was at a laptop for whatever reason.

i manage several wordpress properties personally via apps in ipad.

I run a pretty lucrative consulting business using bookeo.com from my ipad. They handle scheduling and payments and such.

I engage in numerous skype chats / group chats daily dealing with business.

Several people in the forum have seen me on "marketing chats" that are flash based systems. Yes there are ways around that on ipad.

I don't program much on my ipad, but thats mostly because i can't program much on a pc...lol. I do however have several ways to troubleshoot php and mysql databases via ipad that for the simple stuff is actually easier than using a pc. BTW, the simple stuff is all my skill level allows for on that stuff.

My point is that yes, I do a good bit of managing these days, but there is almost nothing that i can't do via the ipad.

A year or so ago, i did a self test to see just how fast it was compared to using a pc. for my normal daily tasks of maintenance, customer support, financial stuff.... it normally takes me about 2-4 hours a day on a pc. The ipad is virtually identical.

short of hardcore programming or image/video editing the tablets work just as well. and i can make my screen the size of any tv in any room instantly with one little device.

That would defeat the purpose of portability. Still, one could argue that such beasts already exist, and just aren't used the way we think of when we think about tablets.

I've seen touchscreen PCs that are much larger than 17".

Tablets are slowly converting into computers and getting more intelligent by the second. However, it's not going to fully replace a computer for quite a bit of time. The tasks you can accomplish on a computer (not to mention the simplicity) is much more than on a tablet. Tablets are made for doing everyday easy tasks such as checking your email, surfing the web, etc. But you'll have much trouble coding in it, testing stuff, and doing all the 'technical' stuff due to the lack of features. It's great for consumers and everyday people, but not yet sophisticated for internet marketers. In fact, when I saw the Windows 8 developer release, I was really upset to see that they had removed a ton of useful features and replaced them with useless ones! They are generally aiming for the regular everyday person who doesn't need to do much on a computer. However they're leaving out the small minority of us. This has got to leave a lot for internet marketers to think about.

I think the tablet is the future for many people. Desktop's will not be needed by most users. I even think laptops are overkill for many. Tablets are portable, have long battery life and easy to use. My father uses one. My nieces each have one. I am writing this post with one. I use a Motorola Xoom.

Yes, I do have a desktop. But I use it less and less. I do much more with my MacBook Air. I design websites with it as well as write PHP code with the laptop.

For everything else I use my tablet. I watch moves. Listen to music. Keep track and answer email. I even edit articles written in Word.

Yes. desktops will be around at least for now for certain tasks but you just don't know what will happen in the future and I choose to keep an open mind.

Well we certainly need to make some of our promotion videos accessible to those devices however can you ever imagine WORKING from a tablet? No thanks... I use 2 hp2335 screens and a normal size keyboard so a tablet surely isn't going to cut it for the work I need to get done. Same with offices... Do you think offices are going to go to the tablet? Not on your life...

Tablets are for people who just want to surf the internet and be connected because it's cool. Nothing wring with that, but for serious online entrepreneurs they will still be using home computers.

Heck, even laptops are hard to work from... But hey tablet sales have risen because it's cool to put that much technology into something so small. It;s for the "me to" crowd, not a serious internet marketer...

Just sayin' but tablets won't work for my business.

I think there's going to be people running million-dollar businesses from a tablet, while some people make a decent wage on a desktop.

Then you'll have people who run million-dollar businesses on a desktop, while some people make a decent wage on a tablet.

As for the ipad though I believe many people buy it just because its Apple there are many Apple fanboys/fangirls that are complete sheep sometimes its a wonder how they get dressed in a morning making the decision what to wear I mean with these people Apple could sell a shiny turd stick an apple logo on it and it would sell.

For me, tablets are just luxury. Computer desktops are necessity.

I don't think PC will be dead anytime soon. On other hand, we just don't what happens next and technology is evolving so fast.

    Daniel,

This isn't really anything to do with the conversation because you like a big screen, but apparently Apple got a patent for some sort of futuristic pen.

I can't remember what it has, but basically you can use it to design anything. It should be available with a future iPad.

A pen is definately going to be a lot more practical for design related work.

Admitedly though, I've always been one for using a mouse. A pen would be another skill to learn.

Despite being in the design industry for many years and despite wanting to master it I didn't ever get into graphics tablets neither, though I did make the effort to try it!

Actually I could (and have on occasion) turn my 7 inch Android Tablet into a desktop.

I can attach a USB or Bluetooth Keyboard / mouse..
I can attach my monitor via the HDMI port
I can attach my external hard drive via usb
Plus Google Drive and other cloud storage is available.

Android has an accessible file system (files and folders).
I have a free and full office program on it that creates MS Office compatible files.
Lots of other apps that could replace most of what I do.

So I could do a lot of my day to day stuff. But then I am not using it as a tablet. I just can't stand typing anything more than a short email on this thing.

Plus I use a lot of Windows based programs. If I wasn't recording videos so much I probably could use it as my office machine if it was hooked in to the peripherals.

(Another reason to choose Android - you aren't locked in and expansion is easy)

Hybrids are the future. Tablets are not. Touchscreens will *not* replace mice or mouse pads.

I imagine a future where hybrids replace tablets, and they have attachable peripherals, even additional screens/devices. Then the hybrid becomes a more versatile laptop, and perhaps they can be attached to a hub-like device at home, which is what would replace your current desktop.

Heck, external computers might become obsolete altogether in the future when we augment our brains with biotechnology. We'll be walking computers, constantly connected to the hive, and these 'physical' computers will be children's toys.

          lol... Daniels.

Reminds me of work at the TV station, where we have at least 16 monitors at the Conti Suite.

Some monitors are for News Studios and Talkshow Studios. Some monitors for playbacks. Some monitors for commercials. Some monitors for graphics overlay and some for scrollers. One monitor is for the big large clock synced against a time benchmark.

And we have monitors to MONITOR competing TV stations. To laugh at when they fumbled, and they fumbled a lot.

But the most important monitor to focus on is only ONE - the output we relay to broadcast towers and then to millions of home.

Hahahah ... you got me !

I'm totally in love with my current laptop of 4 years. Very stable and loyal. It helped me made substantial amounts for the passed years.

Acquired an android tablet early this year for the heck of not getting outdated. Most of the time I use it as a planner, watch movies while travelling and as my pocket translator in China. Sometimes use it to assess web designs. Otherwise it stays idle in my bag.

        1) One monitor for me to communicate to my V.A thru. email

        1) One for monitor for Warrior forum.

Having used a laptop for years and switched back to a desktop for the extra processing power needed for video rendering, the important question really is not what we use but what our customers will be using.

I can see the justification for using tablets at seminars and delivering presentations to clients but for most day to day tasks, is the effort required to adjust worth it.

I have a tablet but find I cannot do serious work on it. I initially bought with the intention of doing some work on it besides entertainment, but I find the only real use is browsing and watching videos. Anytime I am doing work like typing, editing my sites, or anything else serious, it always the desktop or laptop. I find tablets cumbersome to do anything productive, but its great for watching movies in HD or the odd Youtube video.

Ok, I work almost exclusively from my ipad. What tasks exactly that make you money can you do from a pc that I can't do from my ipad?

And please don't talk about typing speed. I am sure there are folks who type faster than me, but I am at about 75ish on ipad and 80ish on normal pc keyboard. virtually no difference.

And I am not trying to argue, but I am curious what "money" tasks people are doing that the ipad or other tablets can't do.

sure when on my pc, i end up with 50+ windows open. Thats not easy on the ipad, but it also doesn't make me money

outside of hardcore programming or serious image/video editing, I have found nothing that i can't do on an ipad at almost the exact same speed.

Maybe you could share a list of some of the apps you've found most useful.

If you know of a decent text editor with more features than a pen and paper, that would be handy. Hard line wraps would be a big plus for me. And if there's a replacement for the dreadful piece of app the iPad calls an emailer, I'd be all ears.

            Paul

I would be more than happy to do that Paul.

For plain text i use "itext pad" i think it was like a $3 app. it does support word wrap, but their setting for it is kinda weird. I am assuming you are thinking about formatting your newsletter? Their setting goes from 100-700 i think which roughly equals 10-70 characters.

but probably the easiest way i do it is to use "office hd" and to save one file as a template with the margins setup where i want them. then i just use that for my template. "office hd" is a more expensive app, but it does a lot of other stuff too.

As for mail, I have my email address all setup to go through one of 2 gmail address that both have about 1.7 million filters setup to organize all the incoming mail into folders. I can actually use the normal mail system fairly easily although i also use a couple that are setup for gmail/google services.

But for me the key to handling the tremendous amount of email is setting up filters so i don't ever have to manage email on my tablet the way most do on their pc.

I also use a kayako app that integrates with their help desk pretty well. I can do 95% of the support stuff from that app which obviously helps to organize and cut down on email.

i run an app called teamworkpm that again corresponds to the online service to keeps all the project management stuff going. i still outsource via other sites like odesk and fiverr, but once i find someone decent, i insist they get into my teamworkpm system so i can give them more work there. Once they find out i will pay, most like that anyway because they save on fees.

i have about 3 more pages of apps to do pretty much anything you want so feel free to ask more questions.

              David,

Thanks. I'll check out Office HD. I have a bunch of related products, but nothing so far does text the way a good text editor does it. I've been spoiled by NoteTab Pro and UltraEdit.

I doubt I'll ever find an MUA for a tablet that doesn't seem like garbage. I've gotten used to Pegasus Mail, which is a very powerful emailer, and anything much short of that would feel like cheating. For a tablet, I'd be happy with something that could even properly reflow paragraphs... I do almost all my email with inline responses.

Much as I hate the thought, I probably need to revisit GMail as a portable option. At least for non-critical communication.

Using a help desk is a great tip that I'd forgotten. I have one set up largely for this purpose, but also to cut down on spam filter issues.

There are plenty of productivity and creativity apps. (DocsToGo is pretty solid.) It's the basic stuff I really depend on, though, that's harder to find. I'm still more comfortable using Pine than the piece of app the iPads pass off as an emailer...

Hmmm... Pine might be the way to go. Got any recommendations for an SSH app?

For myself having spent 6 months traveling with only an iPad I'd say the apps I have found the most essential to work in my IM business have been:

            1) Pages

Totally required for any serious writing and formatting of books, newsletters or anything. It's not as detailed and advanced as the PC version, though close. I wrote several 80+ page Ebooks on it. Greatest downside though are adding photos to it, cause there is no option to compress them when you publish so it has the tendency to create too large of file sizes. It also sucks with screenshots which I used a lot of cause after you crop the screenshot in the photo app and then import that into pages, it doesn't keep the crops and displays the original. So you have to take another screenshot of the cropped one to use it. Annoying.

            2) WinZip or FastZip

Pretty essential for unzipping downloaded zip files or zipping them to upload.

            3) iUploader

Can't really live without this one! Almost all sites that have an upload button to search your PC to upload a file don't work on the iPad. Though if you go to the site from the iUploader browser they suddenly work and you can search for files and upload them to the site.

            4) Sharefile

This is an app that comes with a service for file sharing. It's free the first month and then charges. Though it's the best I found for the iPad for easily uploading of files to their server and sharing the download links with others.

            5) iFileConvertor

Converts most file types to other file types.

            6) Paypal

How could you do business without the PayPal app? The best feature of this app are the push notifications of whenever you get a payment come in it rolls over a notice of at the top of your screen showing the amount and from whom. Great when you have a launch and start seeing it turn over every few minutes!

            7) SKYPE

Of course, super essential! Great for chating or even calling reg phones.

            8) Wordpress App

Great for creating, updating and editing your blog posts.

            9) Dropbox

Another very essential app for backing up your data and syncing it or just keeping it on there so you don't use as much space on your iPad. Works very quickly to see your files and upload/download them as if they're on your iPad.

            10) N+otes

Great note app that is very organized with folders and lists of notes.

            11) Of course all the social media apps. Facebook, Pinterest, LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram, etc.

            12) GetResponse app

Can only write text only emails in the app, though it's much faster than their site to write an email and send it to my list!

            13) Of course all my other banking apps to manage my accounts.

            14) Gotomeeting and Anymeetng app

For keeping up with the webinars and meetings etc.

I think you are in the minority here David.

Unless I were to hook a real keyboard to it I just can't do much with the virtual keyboard. Also having to hold the thing all the time while doing typing and other things becomes awkward. I have tried it.

I couldn't see typing up a huge document as I find a short email is all I can stand to do on it.

As I posted earlier I can essentially turn my Android tablet into a desktop. But then why not just use my desktop? It has many advantages.

Glad it works for you, but it won't for many. It will for some if they can handle the virtual keyboard and like working on it.

Yes you can do those things, but people who do those things usually do so with the aid of an attached physical keyboard or connecting the tablet to a bigger screen. If you are going to do those things you are essentially transforming it into a desktop/laptop anyway.

I have tried to use my tablet a few times to update/manage my sites and it just didn't feel good. Its OK for checking traffic and earnings stats, but not for doing anything deeper and technical. It felt sow, the smaller screen also didn't help.

As someone else mentioned, its great for bedtime browsing/watching videos. I love watching old clips of Jerry Springer while resting (one of my weird and guilty pleasures). Its so funny how people can humiliate themselves as they did on that show in front of the nation.

I suppose if you want to work away from home and don't wish to carry a laptop, then the tablet can come in handy.

But one great thing about iPad is that it never slows down and always virus free.

The true test would be to lock a capable person in a room with a tablet and see how long it would take them to put together a system from stone cold to generate money, as opposed to simply orchestrating a system which has previously been set up by others means....

To keep test conditions fair, any work that's outsourced can also only be done on a tablet.....by persons also locked in rooms.

"Locked in a room" being an apt metaphor for exactly how I'd feel trying to do my day to day business on a cheeseboard.

First of all, this is not a tablet only vs pc only argument. It is more about can tablets replace a pc for the vast majority of tasks. And having done so, i say yes they can.

as to your scenario. I can build squeeze pages, setup a php footer with all the tracking stuff, setup an email list and optin form, ftp the whole thing to a new server setup, in something around 1 hour on my tablet.

There are several apps to do this via WP, but i am talking about hard coding html from scratch.

Now i would outsource the ecover and that can be done on tablet, but as of now, i don't know of any decent software to do that via tablet...the market for that would just be way to small at this point in the game.

Tablets are a new toy and are far too weak for what we need as internet marketers. Hell, I run three big screens and could not do what i do on a squeeze box.

Mobile is the future if you are mobile, tablets are the future if you are lounging but desktops are the grunt providers for real productivity.

I still use a laptop...although it is a little outdated lol honestly though I may use a tablet more for the fun stuff but will always stick to the laptop for working. So now that I read what I just wrote yeah we do need to start monetizing the tablets because most money is made when people are entertained or having fun!!!!

I have all three (PC, laptop and tablet). All are great quality products, but my tablet is treated more like Kindle than anything. It sits on a table all day until it comes time for bed when I want to read. For daily use is the laptop. For graphics and such, I use the desktop. Each one has it's own purpose for me and don't see any of them really going away...oh yeah, and then there's the phone with all of it's apps.

Still now, desktop PC's are the best to me. Because they are much more stronger than other devices and able to take more load than others. Also it is cheaper than laptops and tablets. Any new trends will create a craze among the consumers. That doesn't mean the others will be vanished from the market.

When you do move to a tablet nearly full time, you do have to change the way you do things. but honestly, I was forced to be more organized and automate lots of things that used to time on the pc.

End of year taxes are a bit of a pain on a tablet if you have a ton going as i and others do. But normal monthly sales/employee taxes are really not that big of a deal if you have a proper system in place.

The problem most have with tablets is that they wont just plugin to your current system and work as well as a pc. You do have to make a conscious effort to adapt your system to work the way a tablet works.

But for me, the difference was more like adapting your business to run from mac rather than pc than anything. You just have to find all the little apps and stuff that make your daily work possible.

Plus with 4g now, i can connect remotely to my desktop pc from anywhere and it is very usable...not like the old super choppy versions.

... and tablets ARE computers. They just have a different form factor (and operating system than Desktop computers.

      On another note...

What if laptops were never invented? What if there were just tablets and desktop computers?

I bet somebody would come along and invent the Laptop Computer and people would be raving about it. They'd be ditching their tablets left and right, instead using the new Laptop Computers with built in physical keyboards that fold up!

Tablets are crippled computers IMO. Their advantage in portability is minimal now compared to the newest ultrabook laptops. What's the great advantage of a tablet now?

Actually, I'd doubt that. If tablets were around before PC's/Laptops. Why would we want to be confined to the corner of a room for when we could walk around freely. Sorry but they'll never catch on! lol

I wouldn't say tablets are crippled computers though. That's not really fair on crippled people. Sure they've got some catching up to do because there are some things you simply CANNOT do. But they will get there.

One day there will be no such thing as a hardware computer! Everything will be merged electronically with our brains and be powered by our kinetic energy.

That's true, they don't like being called crippled. Their preferred term is "differently abled". That's the term to use when you want to be politically correct; otherwise known as "PC".

I hear email marketing is dead too; in fact I heard that a few years ago. Except that it's the bread and butter of six, seven, and eight figure earners.

I like tablets for the size and nice look, but where do you put it while you're sitting in an easy chair, watching a webinar with your hands occupied with food and drink? You need a holder, right?

I've got the perfect holder idea: why not a hinged holder with a keyboard built in that fits nicely on your legs? Oh someone already invented it? It's called a laptop? Damn, all the best ideas are already taken!

The PC isn't going anywhere. It has the advantage of size. With a larger acceptable size comes more powerful components that take several years to size down for the tablets to use. Today's best tablets have processing speeds that PC's had nearly 10 years ago. Developers will never ignore the power advantage of the PC and consumers will always be hungry for whatever it is that PC has that tablets do not.

Everytime I hear something is "dead" it's never usually true for a long time after the call for its death.

A tablet could never be as efficient as my MAC and 2 screens for organization and work.

And fads are fads, will a tablet really be useful for people in business in comparison to a laptop? How about weight and stability?

Will my customers use it? Yes, but most still use a computer. I'll be fine.

just because you personally don't understand how it can be done doesn't at all make it not possible to do.

Someone has said that tablets are for gaming and not for programming. However, with a good keyboard it can be done.

It is also necessary to check whether you can compile codes in your tablet, i.e. something like gcc included with iOS or android.

The biggest thing about smartphones and tablets is that when technology travels, everything changes. When people no longer have to sacrifice time at the alter of the desktop, how will they apply technology in that new found time at hand? The message fundementally changes when people change how they are interacting with their technology.

The trend is that more and more people use tablets / phones to surf the web. However, those same people also use PCs for other tasks. Therefore, all of this new technology is just diversifying the way people access the web, not actually replacing it.

I don't think tablets can beat computer, I think tablets are being used mainly by kids, girls and non working women and they are using it for time pass only, but when it comes to do work only desktop or laptop comes in the mind we can't compare usability and speed of computers with that of tablets just an example writing a letter of 200 words merely took 5-7min computer if your typing is bad but same person may took more than 20mins on a tablets, so small screen or small tiny products just can't be compared with computer in terms of usability and work..I have tablet for my 3year kid yes he loves playing on it and his favorite app is baby Bus

Basically as many other people have stated...

Computer are not going anywhere anytime soon. Tablets while useful being able to carry and use practically anywhere doesn't have everything you need to run a successful online business.

For me an online business goes as

    Desktop Computer
    Laptop
    Ipad
    Iphone

The way technology is advancing though -- who knows what it may be like in 5-10 years time.
