Hi Their im working on a site for a friends car wash. Whats the best way to buy the domain name. Do i buy it then charge my friend or does he buy it then give me access to it so i can change the name servers to my hostgator name servers.

This is still new to me and im learning everyday.

Thanks warriors in advance for your help and advice.

I would have them buy it so that you are not responsible for it. If your relationship with them turns sour, you will still have to communicate with them to renew the domain. Also, they really should own it because it is theirs. If you purchase it, then really you own it, and that is not the best solution for a client.

When the domain is up for renewals, the emails should go to them, not you. They should also get their own hosting. You can get an affiliate commission for referring them to your recommended hosting company. I think Hostgator gives 90 dollars for referrals through Commission Junction. If you sign up with Hostgator's affiliate program directly, you will get paid less.

    Head over to namecheap

Buy the domain, set your nameservers.

Once you've finished the site. Get them to send you the payment via Escrow. This way once you receive the funds you won't be exposed to any nasty surprises. Once you've been paid, then transfer ownership to them and get them to switch the nameservers over to their hosting.

Here is the thing i want to offer them a free site or cheap site (for my first say 40-50 clients to build up a portfolio. then collect reoccurring payments on a monthly basis for hosting. So i should buy the domain then transfer it to them when i get payment for it. Then set up a monthly subscription for hosting.

Would this be the best way forward.

      Hi,

I would suggest that you will get the payment first because when they don't like it, they will just simply reject and don't pay you.

      Regards,

They won't pay you if they can buy it from godaddy themselves. Buy good names and charge a premium to overcome for the losses from unsold ones.
