Looks like PayPal did it yet again!

Howdy,

We have all heard various horror stories about PayPal. It seems that they do many things for no apparent reason, and that can have a negative effect on our businesses.

I just got a "surprise" from PayPal in my inbox.

The letter is just another example of why I continue to use PayPal. I have been with them for a decade (I think) and have never had a single problem with them.

My refund rates are incredibly low, and I handle disputes quickly and professionally.

This is what I got in my inbox...

Due to your exceptional PayPal account performance, we are happy to let you know that your funds will no longer be temporarily held during the investigation of a claim, dispute, or chargeback filed by your buyers. This change will take effect immediately. There is no action required on your behalf to take advantage of this exciting benefit.
Yep, looks like PayPal did it yet again. Thanks, PayPal.

All the best,
Michael

It will be interesting to see who reads the OP, and who doesn't.

I have a hunch it will be easy to tell.

      Michael,

Thank you for sharing the good news. I always find it refreshing to read positive posts regarding PayPal as I find no problems with them at all. Whenever I've needed help of any kind, they've always been extremely helpful, polite and prompt.

      Oh, and congratulations!

Michael, that is really great news. I haven't gotten any of those notices yet,
      but I'm hoping that someday.

      Congrats on your success.

For every positive anecdote, there are 10 negative ones behind it.

They are starting to feel the pressure now they are not the only provider. Good. Some of the horror stories I've read, if true, are disgraceful on Paypal's part. Imagine you dedicate 2 years of your life building an incredible product, launch, and then all sales are frozen by Paypal. That's enough for me to not trust them with large amounts of *my* money.

Not just that, they have no protection for the buyers in some instances. I was scammed for a smallish amount of money ($150), and Paypal basically stepped back during the dispute and said they couldn't do anything because the sale was digital. I've had an active account with them for 5 years and my word in this single dispute still means squat.

That right there is something PayPal really isn't a fan of. One of the reasons PayPal and I get along so well is because I always make sure there is enough in there to cover any refunds I might have. It's about minimizing risks for them.

To be fair I don't sell products, I sell services, and by the time they reach my Paypal account they have already been finalized elsewhere (Elance).

I wouldn't even consider Paypal if I were selling products. Much more consistent and cheaper solutions available.

Not withstanding the OP, seems from the feedback I get from service providers that Paypal is less then ideal for them.

Not really, because even if the offender does not have the funds in the account, or bank account that is attached, to cover refunds then PayPal does not pay for it themselves. They just say there's nothing they can do, and move on. I've been on that end of the situation, and it's not fun.

To be honest I'm not sure they take that into consideration, because having the money in your account or not doesn't make a difference to them.

There's many many cases that have been published online where paypal just take any refund money owed straight from the sellers bank account. So in their eyes if money is in the paypal account or money out of the paypal account they're still taking it.

But I totally agree that you may be seen as lower risk if you leave a buffer balance in your account. I'm just not sure if they actually factor it in or not.

Of course - that's because people with a problem tend to complain about it while satisfied customers go on about their business and say nothing.

even if the offender does not have the funds in the account, or bank account that is attached, to cover refunds then PayPal does not pay for it themselves.
If a seller is using paypal - he needs to have refund funds available if needed...either in his paypal acct or in an attached bank account. If he doesn't, the buyer may be out of luck and the seller will find his PP acct limited. That's business. People continue to complain that Paypal doesn't guarantee digital goods - but for years that statement has been on the site for all to see.

One of the first steps they take when they look into your account because of refunds or chargebacks is to ask you to keep a minimum balance. When you ask PayPal representatives for tips to keep your account in good standing, they suggest keeping a healthy balance to quickly and easily deal with any possible refund request.

With the amount of people using PayPal everyday I think there would be a lot more noise (in quantity and intensity) if there was something seriously wrong. For many they are the most affordable and convenient solution.

I have an Australian account (which I believe has to play by a different set of rules here) and they've (the support team) been great to work with.

Like any company, I've had my ups and downs with them. All you can do is make sure you actually understand and follow the rules. Most of the time things will work out. They are a business after all! It's their job to minimize risk and keep their low risk customers happy.

I have had it up to here with Paypal I can't believe they limited your account!!!

    LOL....

Only kidding I DID read the OP - did I get you?

Awesome stuff on the holds and I like the fact that they do a quicker transfer to your bank now - it only takes a few hours in most cases.

I just love hearing good things about Paypal.

I have always been looked after by Paypal, my account was limited once, only because I was traveling and logged in from a different country, I just called the up, did what they asked, and was sorted out almost immediately. The support was so friendly, and they did mention a couple of times it was to protect me, and I understand. Never happened again.

    Great Post Michael.

Well look again Damien, the stats seem to point to the fact that there are so far at least 5+ warriors saying they've never had a problem with Paypal and you are so far the only person really against them.

Do you see a pattern here? Well if you don't then at least maybe you would consider changing your comment in bold!

        Just a thought.

It's just a comment, and most in jest. Lighten up.

All I'm illustrating is that you don't have to look far for horror stories (search the forums), yet we hardly ever hear the positive side of Paypal. Maybe because when it is going ok, there is nothing to say; they are doing their job.

Again, all in jest lest we forget how long Paypal have been screwing people out of legitimate earnings. I haven't had a problem with my account in 5 years, and now they don't even take charges on Elance payments and funds can be withdrawn into my bank within a couple of hours.

Yet why should this be a thing to broadcast? A payment processor managing your customers money and your earnings with care? Who would have thunk it? Come on. Where are the posts about "Amazon did it again!" where we hear the surprising story that for once Amazon actually shipped a product and didn't charge you twice. The fact that these posts even make sense is testament to the wrongful battering people have taken from Paypal.

Yeah seems like you're the one who perhaps could do with lightening up lol. Yes there are some people who have had bad experiences with Paypal I don't deny that, but you just wrote a blanket statement about them which isn't trued based on many people's experiences here.

In short your comment is way off in terms of 1 out of 10 being satisifed IMO.

I suppose you could look at it that way, but I don't. You are assuming that all of the horror stories are true, but is that really the case? Neither of us can know for sure, but we do know that we are only hearing one side in all of those "horror stories".

Many times a person will admit that they did something "a little wrong" or against a seemingly small rule that they don't agree with. In other words, when you dig deeper, PayPal isn't nearly the monlithic ogre it is so often portrayed as.

I wrote my post as a way of reminding people that PayPal is a good company and that I have had positive experiences with them.

$50,000 minimum, and 50% rolling reserve for 180 days on a 5 year old account they never had a chargeback, dispute, or refund. They just didn't like me selling intangible items, despite my track record.

I received one of these as well.

PayPal does have some serious issues though... most of which have to do with API, incomplete or incorrect documentation, and support providing incorrect answers 90% of the time when it comes to integration. The new CEO claims to be addressing these issues... Hopefully.

Has anyone else using paypal as a checkout option been annoyed at how hard PayPal is pushing the "bill me later" feature when someone tries to buy your product? I think it's awful because it is very confusing to someone and interrupts the checkout process with something that 95% of people don't want to use.

Wow, this is very interesting news! Very surprising from them.

Sadly I have not gotten that email. I know my refund/dispute/chargeback rate is very, very low. Always take care of those issues right away.

I just wish they didn't always stick you with a settlement fee on chargebacks. Well think I won 1 or 2. Not my fault if some one's pay pal account gets hacked or broken into.

Never seen a cheaper solution for payments. I must have missed them.

I have to say too, I've always had good support from them, phone and email. Always been pleasant and nice.

I have used PayPal for around 7 years and have pushed lots of money through. I think there service is very good. The only time I ever had an issue with them is one time they froze my account, but even when they did this they tried to call me first to discuss the issue, but I had entered the wrong phone number so it was my own fault they froze it. 20min on the phone to go over the issue and update my phone number with them and they unfroze the account.

The letter is just another example of why I continue to use PayPal. I have been with them for a decade (I think) and have never had a single problem with them.

My refund rates are incredibly low, and I handle disputes quickly and professionally.

This is what I got in my inbox...

Yep, looks like PayPal did it yet again. Thanks, PayPal.

    All the best,
    Michael
That's great and refreshing news Michael, congrats!!!

Didn't Paypal recently retain a CEO or Pres? Maybe things actually are changing for the better over there.

In my experiece I had mixed results with paypal.

If you are doing the wrong thing, you will get penalized.

But if you get your account banned from doing a big launch, they are normally cool about it, and work with you.

My account is also like almost 10 years old and had some problems while traveling about security access (not too weird).. and later about not knowing the answer to my secret questions anymore when I wanted to change my password (you should do this every now and then)...

I called around and nobody knew what to do.. in the end got a contact number from Paypal in my home country (I live in other country now) called they told me but hey you are a big customer so I can't help you you have a personal account manager

Then got his number and all was fixed in 5 minutes.. so first this was a bit a pain in the ass but now I have his number all is goooooood..

Couple months ago got a call from them on how I was doing and my dispute rate went up in that month (had a some big time server issues then) but all was still good and my normal dispute rates was also very good and they offered me special lower transaction rates

    I'm still happy with Paypal!

I think that when you are new to paypal you might experience problems but after a while you get to understand there policies and from then on I guess it gets to be a smooth ride
