Offers of Paid-For Content

Over the last few weeks I've had a lot of emails from people offering to pay me to put articles on my content site. In the past I've always turned these offers down, but now the price has got more attractive (I'm guessing this is to do with the latest Google update?) I've accepted a couple of them. The content was good and they only included a couple of links to reputable sites, so I thought why not? I would only ever consider publishing an article if it was well written and relevant to my site, but should I be more wary? Is there any way that publishing these articles could damage my site's SEO in the future?

If do it with moderation you should be fine.

You will only be penalized if the bulk of your website becomes paid "link exchange" postings.

I can't see why, really. Thousands of people syndicate content. Most of the world's leading news and sports websites, for a start ...

Only if Google decides that you're running a "content farm", but I'm sure you're nowhere near that, and never would be. It's not something for which there are any "penalties" at all, clearly ... and given the lengths Google goes to, to reassure people that they like syndicated content, it seems pretty inconceivable that there should/would/could be, too. The only thing you might want to avoid is publishing them by the hundred with no unique content of your own, or linking to dreadful sites. But you're obviously not thinking of that, at all. So no problem here, surely.

    Hi,

It can damage your site if the links going out are to "bad" sites (sites deemed junk by Google).

I agree. This is the only concern that I would have. Of course, you would want to do it with moderation.

Julia, by the looks of your message, it appears that you have the control on which type of content lands your website. I don't think you should worry. In most cases, those who offer guest posting will only offer it if they see your niche relevant to theirs, too. They know what will hurt them also.

Thanks everyone, really great advice, much appreciated.

So, it sounds like I shouldn't have any problems, I just need to keep an eye on where the articles are linking and not publish too many of these articles (I wouldn't want to anyway).
