New and in need of Focus

I am 26 years old, graduated college with a degree in Marketing and International Business although now not working in either of those fields. I work full time for a large insurance company and have been with them since I graduated in 2009. I am trying to break into the internet marketing arena although I feel lost. I just got married and am looking to make additional passive income to help pay down some student loans and hopefully be able to survive off it.

I recently was searching for ways to make additional income and found this site and alot of internet marketing information (likely too much). I am on information over load and asking the help of all the experince here to give me some focus so i can start my journey.

If someone would be so kind as to point the newbie in the right direction of what i should focus on to get started and which opprotunities have a low cost as right now im not in the best financial position due to helping my family when my dad had a recent heart attack (he survived, thank god). I am eager to learn and just need to be put in the right direction.

Thanks for any advice or help and i hope that I will someday be able to give back to the community with my gained knowledge
#focus

Sorry to hear about your Dad!
Suggestion: Read as much as you can on this forum to start with. Join the War Room for even greater IM wisdom - (yes it does cost, but the one-off fee will repay you indefinitely!)
Set up a free blog and share with the world your expertise. You must have learned a lot concerning Marketing and International Business so why not share your wisdom and establish yourself as a rightful expert in your field? You could start by sharing on the WF and establishing your credentials. Once you are up and running, you will find plenty of ways to monetize your blog - (Adsense, affiliate products, advertising etc).
    Best of luck to you!

Spencer - as much as the "make millions in 2 second" offers may be attractive, set up a real workable plan and follow that. With your marketing background you should know how to do that.

Do you just want to make quick money or actually turn this into a business? How you go about it depends on the answer I think.

I would like to make it into a business that i can continue to grow to produce additional income. Not really looking for a quick payoff but would like to see some initial money so i keep motivated if that makes sense.

While i did do marketing in college it was more on the marekting research side of things and i was stupid not to focus more on internet based stuff. Times change quick and school focused more on TV and print ads so i feel at a disadvantage there.

I tried starting a blog, well 2 actually (Beerfarer and Hate/Run/Love | Running: It's a Hate/Love Relationship) but i found that if im not passionate about what im writing about i tend to faulter...i then was thinking about looking to outsource some of the writing but the topics i wrote about didnt seem to be outsourceable

If I was in your shoes and had little money to work with I would start a niche blog.

    1. Choose a niche or topic area that you are VERY passionate about. It will make it much easier to write about and be involved with especially when you are not making money from it right away.

    2. Get your own domain and hosting and don't use free blogging sites. There is some cost involved but is worth it in the long run.

    3. Use Twitter and Facebook to interact with other bloggers in your niche. Get to know them and develop real relationships with them.

    4. Add content to your blog at least once a week. This should be easy as it is something you are passionate about in the first place. Don't worry about making money. Concentrate on building your audience.

Once you have an audience figuring out how to monetize your blog will be much easier.

This might be cliche but the bottom line is to take action. Don't worry about making mistakes or getting things perfect. Adapt and adjust as you go.

Once you figure out a niche or have your blog up let me know. I would love to follow it.

Spencer, the first thing I would concentrate on is; a problem that people have that you can solve. It doesn't necessarily have to be something you're passionate about, although that's a plus, it's not a requirement.

Have you figured that out yet?

There's a few basic approaches and main decisions that you will eventually need to make.

    1) How will you earn? .. adense, affiliate marketing, cpa are some major forms of income
    2) How will you get traffic? ... you can either try for free organic traffic thru SEO, or paid traffic

You have to realize that organic traffic and adsense are Google dependent - meaning that Google can demolish years of work with one algorithm change (Penguin, Panda). That may sound a little more harsh than it really is, but in theory it is true.

Paid traffic costs money but is Google proof. However, it requires a lot of analysis because you have to constantly access if your costs are providing a return.

In my opinion, you should build an email list using a service like Aweber or Getresponse. Why? Because you can use BOTH organic traffic and paid traffic to build your list. And you have countless chances to make your advertising costs back through backend sales. If your initial costs gets no sales but you add lots of people to your list, then you have build your assets.

The best part of having a list is that things like Penguin and Panda updates have ZERO (or minimal) effect on your bottom line.

You brought up a GOOD POINT - Information Overload. In this business, there is ALWAYS a new improved piece of software or a method that will rock your world - so they say. Guess what? Most of them don't ...

YOU MUST FOCUS in this business!!! Before you know it, you will have wasted away a year chasing the newest plugins, the newest methods, etc. Most of us have been there done that.

This is why is it SO IMPORTANT to identify your objectives and goals. Once you do, then you can easily discard anything that doesn't support your objective.

Maintain a healthy vision of where you want to go - you will get there with persistence and focus.

    Hope this helps!!

Right, so with the information you have right now, what would you like to do? I always vote for going with your passion, so if that is your thing, what is your passion? What thrills you and you can imagine yourself doing it all the time? This may help: The free guides here may help you get started.

Tim Kaplan, also mentioned something : if you can provide a solution to a problem you are well on your way. What problem can you solve right now?

    Hey Spencer...

Welcome to the premier marketing forum on planet Earth. I can help you...

You can easily spend forever reading, learning, planning, preparing while really getting nothing done. It can be easy to do that if you're unsure or for other reasons.

So you need to avoid doing that. And avoid buying anything unless you need it, immediately. Don't buy something thinking it looks great - and you'll be sure to use it later. Avoid all the hype and sometimes bs you read in sales copy. It can be tough resisting, at times, but resist it you must do.

Some have mentioned following our passion and that's pretty good advice. If not passion, then knowledge and some interest will often suffice. At least something you won't mind spending many hours thinking about.

One of the most important skills you can have is a decent to good grasp of copywriting. This can open many doors for you in terms of what is possible. Check out copyblogger.com, and there's a lot here to learn from.

Copywriting will help you with writing content, ads, sales copy, presell copy << important, and just understanding human nature and marketing. Don't feel like you have to be an expert to write decent copy that gets the job done. Actually, it can be a life long education.

Check this out... a list of all in one threads on various topics. Bookmark it and use for reference. Tons of free and useful info.

allinone - WarriorForum - Internet Marketing Forums - Threads Tagged with allinone

Understand how to write for the online environment and general user. Very important. And learn how to format web content for maximum effect.

Study web usability... check out, useit.com. I think that's the name of it. Tons of useful info, but don't spend forever learning it.

Learn and take action on something tangible every day. Small steps are fine but make them each day.

Decide what you want to do before you do anything. Have a goal(s) which will give you direction and concrete steps. Outline what you want to do, or need to do. Take your time with this.

    Idea...

If you don't mind working in your field which is insurance, maybe you can combine that with your experiences. Here's what I mean...

You can create a product, or a good authoritative site about the impact created when a family member, or income earner, has a major medical event. Like a heart attack. Then you can tie that in with the issues surrounding insurance of various kinds.

The niches surrounding heart attacks, or major medical events, are many and huge. The insurance market/niche(s) are also huge and highly competitive. But don't worry about that.

There are very many problems, unexpected problems and various issues that occur when something unexpected happens like what happened to your father.

Since you're in the insurance industry for over ten years, you'll be perceived as an expert which is important.

You can talk about very many things related to the above. In essence, maybe create a guide that can help prepare people so they'll have protection, etc, in this type of situation.

Educate them about options, choices, explain what they mean, how to protect themselves financially. You can also talk about the emotional component since you went through this with your father. You spent a lot of money helping, so talk about protecting assets. What's a good idea and what isn't, etc.

You can build an entire blog around this. Create a product that gives details and solutions. Take parts of it and write a short report, 10 pages, that presells your main product but does not give the whole story away for free.

Make an email list. Learn how to write good email copy and remember to build relationships first. Promote your main product.

In the meantime, think about related (backend) offers and then see what you can find. Perhaps products/services related to finance, health concerns but not things like How to Get Rid of Plantar Warts... not that.

There are very many sub-niches available. Perhaps good quality CPA offers although I am not sure what they are. Careful with CPA.

    Then there's marketing....

You can do forum marketing... but forget about your site in the beginning. Don't even talk about it. Once your blog is up, then just participate in relevant forums. Give answers, be helpful, build a rep. Don't mention your domain in any posts. Do that for several months or so.

If you can afford it, do PPC advertising for very low cost keywords at MS Adcenter, Adwords (Google), Adbrite, 7Search, ExactSeek. Learn how to do PPC advertising first. Perry Marshall has an excellent course in it, not cheap, but you can buy modules. I learned from him over 10 years ago. He's first rate.

Do very low cost PPC campaigns and just drive to your homepage, or make a landing page on your site - not a squeeze page. Do $5 or $10 a day if possible at as many places as you can afford to do. Always split test ads, split test landing page if you can. This is all where copywriting knowledge will help you.

Write excellent posts and articles on your blog.

Do guest posts/writing for good quality sites.

If you know nothing about IM, then avoid trying to get into the IM niche. Up to you, but I advise against it.

Lots more you can do, but that's just an idea of how you can approach it.

Okay so you're not in the best financial boat, you've just married, and it seems you've gotten even more "responsibility" lately. Okay here goes the best advice I can give to you from personal experience in this IM game, ready?

Find out what interest you and do a little research. One thing I would never suggest to anyone is getting into something because of its potential to make you X amount of money. You'll need something to keep you in it (when there are days you feel like giving up), and money sadly isn't enough.

Then find you some masters/gurus/experts in that niche. Website flipping, affiliate marketing, product creation, coaching, whatever. Find out who the top players are and see what mentoring and coaching they have to offer. Try and build a relationship with them showing genuine interest in both their field and them. SAVE YOUR MONEY AND PUT IT TOWARD MENTORING/COACHING.

Why? Because a coach/mentor will shave tons of time, effort, and MONEY off doing something yourself, trust me!

With that being said, best of luck and no that making money online is real and possible and hopefully with the tips you get from this thread, it'll be your reality reallll soon!

There are a great many WSOs featuring expert mentors on the WF. Most people agree that getting a mentor will greatly enhance and quicken your success online.

I did a quick WF search and found the following on page one:
Actual search results from Warrior Forum Filtered for WSOs Only & then filtered through my quick review!
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    http://www.warriorforum.com/warrior-...-renegade.html
    http://www.warriorforum.com/warrior-...mentoring.html
    http://www.warriorforum.com/warrior-...00-7-days.html
    http://www.warriorforum.com/warrior-...witnessed.html
    http://www.warriorforum.com/warrior-...der-100-a.html

Anyone else can add mentor referrals and I'll update this small list - only searched 1st page results, but I know there are many more worthwhile WSOs for mentors on the WF.

Hey! I just got here and there are so many advices that I couldn't read them all. Someone suggested you to join the War Room Member - I'd say - better wait for it. Keep reading outside the War Room, until you get somewhere.

Also, as you have studied marketing research and strategies, I believe that you know many things that many Internet marketers around don't know. Use what you've learned!

    1) Think of your strengths, abilities, and knowledge, and define a niche that you feel comfortable and experienced in (at least at some point).
    2) Continue with the research and find a sub (also called micro) niche that is not much competitive. Here I'd suggest you to look for the following things:
    - How to make a keyword research
    - How to use the Google Keyword Tool
    3) Try to find a monetizing method for this niche.
    - Choosing between Amazon/AdSense/Clickbank for monetizing method.
... and many other things to follow.

Remember: making money from Internet is now a huge area where you can improvise as much as you want. I believe that right now IM is way more real than it was before 1 year.

Good luck mate, and see you around!

    Hey Spencer,

I always recommend starting a drop ship eCommerce business to anyone who is just starting out.. probably because that is how I got started almost seven years ago. You can get started for a very minimal investment (I started with just $29) and grow a very large and significant business in a short amount of time. There is also a very small learning curve which is not true in all types of internet marketing.

Once you know what you are doing you can create more and more websites until you reach you target income. These websites will also become HUGE assets within 12 - 18 months of profitability which can be sold at nice multiples... that's what I do... create and grow eCommerce stores, profit off them for a year or so, then sell them at 18 months earnings.

Best of luck to you and your family!

Spencer if you are looking into IM you should spend some time learning about internet marketing. Go onto the forum and learn as much as you can. There are also a lot of free infromation out in google - learn them. If you are finding products to sell there are a lot of products in the wso thread and there is also clickbank where you can find businesses in niche areas and its free.

There are also a lot of free ways to market your product such as social media e.g. facebook, twitter, pinterest, forums, articles, blogs, seo but these are free strategies and therefore they require time but work hard on it and you will definately get a breakthrough.

All the best to your new adventure in the IM world

    Hi
I just want to warn all newbies from some sharks that are waiting for newbies like you to screw them. I am also a newbie (though I registered here in this forum long time ago) but havent started making any money yet. I am keeping a record of two very bad WSO sellers with whom I had very bad experience(one just sold me his stuff in amazon niche site building the price was for a full site building and 3 articles +WP installation) he just built me a very basic simple site and disapper without doing any thing, I kept e-mailing him to at least help me in inserting my links, he sent me an e-mail saying"sorry for the hassels) and "will come back to you" till now he didn't e-mail me back, by comming to this forum I found that he is quite busy selling another WSO and of course every Joe and Jane have some ready folks to give raving reviews(I REALLY START TO DOUBT IF SOME WSO SELLERS WOULD PM SOME BUDYS AND FRIENDS TO WRITE THEM POSITIVE REVIEWS)?!!!!!!!!!
My second seller also has a long bad story and when I requested him to refund back my money due to his bad follow-up and service he started to write me e-mails calling me names(I am keeping exchange e-mails from both sellers) now beside waring newbies who are asking for help from other warriors to be more careful from some folks who would take advantage of them, I am asking WF members this question:- WHAT IS THE RIGHT PAGE OR PERSON TO SEND HIM MY COMPLAINS ABOUT THESE TWO SELLERS MENTIONED ABOVE?
    Thanks,
    Jane
