Want an Extra Ip from Host but they Need it in Writing

I am now upgrading hosting and have been trying to decide between 2 hosts. One seems better and cheaper but will only give me one IP. In order to get another IP I have to send a request so they have it on file.

I want a 2nd Ip for ssl which I think is a good reason. I understand that there are rules about usage of IP's so cannot really blame them for having these requirements. Having said that I cannot help but feel a bit hesitant about them having this stuff on file. Makes me feel a bit like I am giving someone else the rope to hang me with.

Should I be concerned that they have all this just for 1 extra IP for ssl. Is It a sign that I am likely to have other problems with this host or Is this just the way it is with a lot of hosts now (maybe I am worrying about nothing).

Thanks Chett

    Hi

I'm not sure how making a request in writing gives them a whole bunch of "information".

What "stuff" will they have on file for the 2nd IP that they don't already have from your account profile? I think they would already have this info about you associated with your first IP.

There is nothing underhanded or unethical about owning more than one IP so I can't see how anything to do with the second IP from the same provider would give you any problems at all.

There are many Hosting services that offer extra IPs for a small additional fee.

Am I missing something about what your concern is?

Well, it is like the 1099s! They had those laws for DECADES, but NOBODY seemed to follow them for affiliates until maybe 8 years ago. Well, IANA has laws about IP addresses. For MONTHS, they have been saying that IPv4s would run out. The nasty secret is that they did YEARS ago, and switching systems and IP audits reclaimed them. And SSL IS a valid need.
