Do web hosts also offer domain names? Or do we buy that in a different company?

you can host different domain names at 1 hosting account, but you have to pay for all your domains seperately

Most web hosts will allow you to purchase domain names right from them.

Correct. The majority of the web hosting companies you'll come across, will be able to sell you domain names as well. The prices will not always be the same though.

You can buy your domain name from your hosting company (usually). BUT it's always recommended to keep a separate domain registrar and hosting provider. (You could have your domain registered with Namecheap and hosting with HostGator).

Whoa, guys I just checked Host Gator and they have this Baby Plan and Business Plan and it says

      Baby Plan
      UNLIMITED Domains
      UNLIMITED Disk Space
      UNLIMITED Bandwidth
      Shared SSL Certificate

      Business Plan
      UNLIMITED Domains
      UNLIMITED Disk Space
      UNLIMITED Bandwidth
      FREE Private SSL & IP
      FREE Toll Free Number

I'm thinking of getting Baby Plan if I decide to go with them since I don't really need a toll number, I just want to try earning from PPC. Are they (hostgator) good from experience? Anyone?

And what's with the separate domain registrar by the way? Any links that you can share to me that tells a story about why please?

HostGator is a large company, and 98% of WF will tell you they are the next best thing since sliced bread. (it's mainly pushed by the affiliates)

They were recently bought out by EIG, which has a horrible reputation for destroying the companies they buy. The term that comes to mind with EIG is "maimize profits & cut costs", which results in poor performance, strict limitations (even though it claims unlimited) & overloaded servers.

Here's a few excerpts from their Terms Of Service on the so called "unlimited space/bandwidth":

***Be sure to read it closely, as you'll notice it's not unlimited, you are limited by INodes - which is files. Even though you probably won't come close to the amount, yet, their TOS contradicts what they market, along with every other big box, bargain basement web host.

        7a.) Resource Usage
        User may not:
        1) Use 25% or more of system resources for longer then 90 seconds. There are numerous activities that could cause such problems; these include: CGI scripts, FTP, PHP, HTTP, etc.
        2) Run stand-alone, unattended server-side processes at any point in time on the server. This includes any and all daemons, such as IRCD.
        3) Run any type of web spider or indexer (including Google Cash / AdSpy) on shared servers.
        4) Run any software that interfaces with an IRC (Internet Relay Chat) network.
        5) Run any bit torrent application, tracker, or client. You may link to legal torrents off-site, but may not host or store them on our shared servers.
        6) Participate in any file-sharing/peer-to-peer activities
        7) Run any gaming servers such as counter-strike, half-life, battlefield1942, etc
        8) Run cron entries with intervals of less than 15 minutes.
        9) Run any MySQL queries longer than 15 seconds. MySQL tables should be indexed appropriately.
        10) When using PHP include functions for including a local file, include the local file rather than the URL. Instead of include("http://yourdomain.com/include.php") use include("include.php")
        11) To help reduce usage, do not force html to handle server-side code (like php and shtml).
        12) Only use https protocol when necessary; encrypting and decrypting communications is noticeably more CPU-intensive than unencrypted communications.
        7b.) INODES
The use of more than 250,000 inodes on any shared account may potentially result in a warning first, and if no action is taken future suspension. Accounts found to be exceeding the 100,000 inode limit will automatically be removed from our backup system to avoid over-usage, however databases will still be backed up. Every file (a webpage, image file, email, etc) on your account uses up 1 inode.
Sites that slightly exceed our inode limits are unlikely to be suspended; however, accounts that constantly create and delete large numbers of files on a regular basis, have hundreds of thousands of files, or cause file system damage may be flagged for review and/or suspension. The primary cause of excessive inodes seems to be due to users leaving their catchall address enabled, but never checking their primary account mailbox. Over time, tens of thousands of messages (or more) build up, eventually pushing the account past our inode limit. To disable your default mailbox, login to cPanel and choose "Mail", then "Default Address", "Set Default Address", and then type in: :fail: No such user here.
        7c.) Backup Limit
Any shared account using more than 20 gigs of disk space will be removed from our off site weekly backup with the exception of Databases continuing to be backed up.All data will continue to be mirrored to a secondary drive which helps protect against data loss in the event of a drive failure.

There's no such thing as unlimited. Disks & servers have physical limits & bandwidth costs money. Once your site starts using the least bit of resources (ram/CPU etc) you're paying for, it will get suspended and you'll be forced to basically upgrade.

**we actually used to use HostGator years ago, but run & manage our own infra. now.

EDIT: Having your domain separate from the hosting company would enable you to switch the DNS information should there be a problem. If the host goes down, you can change your DNS info to point ot a new web host.

For INodes, a file can be 1KB or 1MB & still treated the same. A typical Wordpress installation can have anywhere between 4,000 to 5,000 files or "INodes). This is before adding plugins, themes, images etc.

Wow. I really hope I can click the thanks button just for you for all the information that you have given to me, I really do.

Now I understand why I should use a different Domain name registrar if I want to get serious about this.

So if I am to use hostgator, I shouldn't really expect to be able to host many of my sites I am planning to. Even with the business plan, it's just like having a huge space but not really unlimited.

          Thanks, I really appreciate everything.

No problem at all. Chances are, you will be fine using them. Just be aware that "unlimited" is nothing more than a marketing term. Web hosts that sell unlimited disk space & bandwidth tend to have even tighter limits because the servers tend to be overloaded, or close to it, which leaves no room for resource spikes.

The first thing you'll probably notice is that when using Wordpress, the Admin Dashboard loads & loads forever & is sluggish. That's a tell-tale sign over a server that's overloaded in most cases.

If you're planning to host a lot of sites in the future, I would recommend getting a reseller account with a provider that poses limits on the amount of storage/bandwidth you will have. You'll find with blatantly limited services, your sites will have more power & be able to breathe better vs the "quantity over quality" web hosts.

              WHOA! IMPORTANT

NEVER buy your domain from your webhost!

              Why?

If you ever have a discrepancy with your hosting service, they can hold your domains! Then its good luck getting them back in a timely manner!

Chances are you would never have a problem with major web hosts however when you go to transfer to new hosting, or you decide you want to downgrade or its not a big company and they are losing customers fast, you are going to be screwed if they don't want to play fair and hold your domain hostage!

Also if you get a spam or intellectual property claims against you, real or fake, hosting companies often act and will freeze you out until its settled. If you have separate domains from hosting, you can get live somewhere else until its sorted out. If not, your site is going to be down for weeks or months.

Its happened before and will happen again.

THIS is important to realize. Get a domain name from the big guys, get your hosting somewhere else. Don't do both from the same place.

You shouldn't have any problem going through your hosting provider to get a domain. Most outsource it to a registry anyway, they just make it convenient so you can sign up for one right there, but the registry holds the domain. I know Bluehost uses Fast Domain, I'm sure most of the major companies outsource it too.

Plus if you will save money buying your domain from another domain registrar. HG charges $15/year versus $10.

Don't forget to look for promo codes for domains. With Godaddy, you can commonly get $2-$5 off the cost just by doing a simple search.

Yes most do, but i recommend having your host and domain registrar separate. Ie: register a domain at godaddy and host your website at hostgator.
