Here is what I have done in the past when outsourcing product creation.

    1) I buy all of my top selling competitors guides
    2) place an add on eLance and oDesk for a ghost writer whose first language is english
    3) review applicants past work and look to see if they add any character into their writing.
    4) Ask them to write two paragraphs on a topic of your choice. This lets you see how they work with deadlines and the type of quality you can expect from them
    5) give them all of your competitors books as their research. Odds are they have no clue about your niche to start with.

After following the steps above you should have a completed eBook in a few weeks time and it will be the best information from all of your competitors in one eBook!

As a note: Make sure your writer wont just downright copy your competitors books. Stress to them that their writing must be original and you will check.

I never pay more than around $300 for a 100 page eBook and my ghost writer even designs and formats the book so they look like complete quality right from the start.

While the product is important your marketing is even more important, so dont spend a cent unless you can produce the sales materials that will convert. If your advertising sucks no one will spend money to read your book.

Extra Tip: Once you have a book created and selling... Pay about $400 for a professional voice over talent to record them reading your book.

    OR

If you are comfortable with your voice, record the reading yourself for free!

package it with your main book for a higher conversion rate or sell it as an upsell for more profits!

Next: with the boost you see in sales from the Audio Book, use the profits to have the book and audio turned into a powerpoint style video and now you are able to sell the Book, Audio AND DVD in one tidy package or individually as upsells!

Again, I cannot stress this enough...

Make sure you study sales copy and learn how to actually sell your product before investing loads of money in it.

I even sometimes will just sell alright PLR for a week or two to make sure my sales copy will convert well enough to justify hiring a ghost writer.

Find out how your competitors work and try to do better.
Thank you for these great tips, I want to hit the thanks button but it doesn't appear to me.

      This is good advice.

To higher your odds of getting something
      that "clicks" with your audience.

You can even try to "match" the writer to
      your audience.

For example. If you're in the "get your ex
      back" niche.

Le's say your ideal customer has the
      following demographic attributes:

      Female
      23-30
      Has kids
      Yearly houshold income of $50-100K
      No college
      Caucasian

Then try to have your writers demo "match"
      your ideal customers demo.

Doesn't have to be perfect of course. But it
will help your product to speak the "language"
      of your audience.

So make them match as good as you can.

I think Derek S. provides some solid information... however, this whole thing just makes me a bit uncomfortable. Please understand that my comments are not directed against anyone on this thread... but some of the comments have "triggered" some feelings.

I've read a LOT of WSO's... some good, some not so good. Very few earth shattering. Outside of this forum, WSO's have the general reputation of being "rehashed crap". Obviously that is not completely accurate, I'm just saying that in most other IM forums, WSO information is not highly regarded, and IMO, in many cases, that is a true statement, although far from universal.

From a marketing perspective, the information on how to produce a WSO from other people's existing work is a wonderful idea. If you are an expert in your niche and add in your own proven material, ideas and twists, and are honest about your experience in the field, then that's great. No point in re-inventing the wheel with every word you write. However, it seems to me that many people who don't have a clue of what they are doing, have taken this good information, produced (or will produce) a product and are selling it to people who are really looking for creative answers to their problems from people who are unqualified to actually help them.

And... of course the obvious... no one, under normal circumstances, is going to reveal a method that is earning them 10K+/mo. for $7. Again, a broad statement, and there are always exceptions, but true for the most part.

Anyway, just a few thoughts of concern here as you discuss product creation. Thanks !

The truth is ANYONE who sells INFORMATION has added to or expanded on other people’s information to some extent. There is no business information that is truly original and not already available for free somewhere else.

I think Derek has shared some very valuable content here which to be honest is wasted on some people.

Agreed. I'm fond of saying, "I've never had an original idea in my life"... but I have been good at being able to build on what I've learned over the years and put some things together that work, have been tested, can be successfully duplicated and earn real money. That was my only point here... that good information like this falls into the hands of unqualified people who strictly use it as an opportunity to regurgitate what is already out there without adding any proven and money making value to it of their own... which is what we are all here for.

That was a really outstanding share Derek. Well done and thank you for sharing with WF.
Damn son you could nearly get a nice WSO out of that post alone. If I could give rep you would have it. But for now only thanks. Many thanks. Time to paste and copy lol jk.

use fiverr to cut down your costs, eg. a voice over can be done for $10. Sales page created for $20 or less.

Derek, your product creation method just seems so commercially driven to me. What if the said top selling competitors guides are all just really well promoted and marketed pieces of fluff? One gets the feeling that many product developers are following your formula to a 'T' when you read some of the rehashed, derivative nonsense available on the market.

Personally, after reading your described method, if I ever saw a product for sale that had your name on it, I would be keeping well away from it.

LOL you're making some big assumptions here David. Instead, assume that I remove all the fluff and add only the meaty bits of content until I have 12 Oz of succulent steak offered to my customers on a silver platter.

I think you have been jaded in the IM industry from self proclaimed "experts" instead of buying from actual experts... Buying products from marketers who only market to marketers. All my markets are far from MMO and the method I mention works brilliantly. I have under a 1% refund rate and even receive testimonials constantly in my inbox.

I'd personally get to know me before making assumptions like that LOL... Lets here your method David?

    Derek,

Do you have any tips for sales page creation and copywriting other than swiping the sales pages of competitors as well? I know that I have purchased WSO's that recommend tweaking headlines etc but I believe there is a little more to copywriting then that.

There is a reason that people shell out big time money for copywriting but it just seems like a skill that needs a little more knowledge behind it rather then spinning and regurgitating another sales page.

First off if you have a competitor who is BUYING TRAFFIC for LONG PERIODS of time (i'm talking over a month of ads running in the same place)... It is safe to assume that their sales copy is profitably converting. Dont take their copy but pay close attention to the formula they use to make the sale.

Most good sales letters will tell a story and build up to introducing the product. A good sales letter should not even let a visitor know their being sold too until they have been completely hooked on your words.

One of the most valuable things to know in this industry is sales copy and treat it like an artform that takes hours of practice to perfect. Practice makes perfect... and once you think its perfect, split test!

If you want to know everything there is to know, learn from the greats! Hit up a book store and buy books on sales letters from the great Gary Halbert and Dan Kennedy.

Also try and track down any info on the three story telling types that Frank Kern uses in his sales copy... They really changed my life when it came to writing copy!

I dont know if its still for sale but the absolute best course on online sales copy was an audio program done by Yanik Silver years ago... track that down if you can too!
