What is the best way to buy registered domains?

Is it better to contact the owners directly or to go over a domain buying service? Which ones would be the best services to use? Will I have to make a binding offer when using those services (I would like to get a price tag on a couple of domains first, then decide later)?

Thanks!

I prefer to contact the domain owner and make an offer.

I prefer to deal with the owner of the domain if their contact information is available.

Sedo is the only site I've used to buy domains and you make a binding offer, and the owner gets 7ish days to accept/decline/counter. Most brokers are middlemen that inflate the price, IMO, but sometimes owners of domains overvalue their own domains. Kind of a catch 22.

They do overvalue their domains, but when push comes to shove, they may take the offer. I wanted one domain that I had been watching since it dropped but this professional registrar picked it up before I could get it. I offered $200 for it. I had the .net already with a site on it, but wanted the .com. They said the domain was $4,500. I said thanks, but no thanks. I got the .net so I'll live with that. So they said, $1,500. I repeated my thanks but no thanks. Told them I have a budget for it of $200 ... period. They sold it to me for $200. It's not a valuable domain to most people but to me it was as I had already built a site on the .net version.

Contact the owner, and bargain with him, this will always get you a lower price!

It is always best to contact the domain owner directly where you see that there's a viable means of contact or information is available online.

    Ok, I got it.

As a newbie I'm a little concerned though that I might make a mistake with transfering, paying, etc. and let them take advantage of me. I guess the likelihood of that happening is a lot less if I use an esatblished company for doing the trade.
