Who's the most remarkable marketer today?

It's interesting for me who would you nominate? Maybe Frank Kern? Maybe Seth Godin? Maybe someone who's name isn't so well known?

I'd like to nominate Barack Obama - that sure was one slick marketing campaign, perfectly executed.

I couldn't disagree with you more. The greatest marketers are the ones who make the most money. Greatness although an abstract idea can be measured. especially if you are talking about dollars and cents. Personally, I think Frank Kern is great. He is the only marketer, that I am aware of that has made the Google Trends top 100. he did this with Mass Control. Now thats what I call great.

I see your point, and I understand. I often feel that way too. There is only one thing that keeps me from agreeing though.

some of the greatest marketers are the ones who can REACH the largest audience (or marketplace). They are able to get their marketing out there to the greatest number of prospects.

If you had to answer... what avenue is the vehicle for REACHING the greatest number of prospects?

        TV?
        Books?

        ?

In my opinion (it's just my opinion) the greatest marketers utilize media to "reach" the greatest number of prospects... and because of that, they tend to be FAR from "under the radar".

Go Daddy's Super Bowl Commercials was a pretty damn good marketing & advertising campaign, for example.

But, I hear ya. I tend to like those under the radar folks myself.

          Hi Eric,

That's true there have been some great marketers that utilize the media. Can't argue with you there. But like you, I see your point, and also know that there have been some companies making millions by doing it more quietly than on a national level.

Lol who is the better marker? The one that doesn't have to utilize the national media and other people but is naturally creative enough to make millions, or the one that does utilize them?

It's like did the chicken come first, or the egg?

Here's another anology ... Who is the better journalist - someone who writes a their column with original thoughts and ideas versus someone who quoted a bunch of other people's thoughts and ideas, but added their thoughts and ideas about those other people's thoughts and ideas to make their point? They both may have received the Pulitzer prize in the end, but which is better?

See what I'm saying? Millions are being made doing it both ways. I just happen to chose my favorite. :p

I'd say the greatest marketers are the ones that make BILLIONS.

I'll choose the Google guys. They found a need/niche and filled it, and now it seems they own the Net.

I agree Kurt. Another great marketer is Mark Cuban originally of broadcast.com. Clayton Makepeace and Ted Nicholas who are responsible for hundreds of millions and maybe billions of dollars in sales are good to model.

      Why?
Because they still have a private life when they want it. Their family does too.
A supermarketeer and uberaffiliate who makes millions and is active publicly all over the web wit thousands of pages and reviews by others and lenses and perhaps even wikipages about them have the same privacy problems as pop stars. I seriously doubt that best internet marketers are as popular as pop stars... it's internet, not everyone is interested in internet marketing. Maybe guy like Seth Godin is a bit popular but still I doubt regular people are coming up to him to sign autographs!..

Evryone who makes money and is public about it is a potential target. It is a choice you make. It is easier to make even more if you are public but there is always a price.

I was going to nominate Jay Abraham or Bill Gates, until I saw Neil's post.

Who was the marketing mastermind behind Obama's campaign?

    Regards,
    Allen

P.S. Greatest missed opportunity on the year: Blackberry didn't have a huge campaign capitalizing on Obama's insistence that he get to keep using their device once in office. "The Blackberry Presidential Model" in your choice of red, white, or blue? "There's only one Oval Office and we helped him get there... now we can help you get to the corner office." "Not even the Secret Service can take your world away from your fingertips." Why didn't we see something like this?

Thats interesting ... I wonder what his thinking is behind that not to use the power of affiliate marketing.

Off hand one would think that leaves a lot of money on the table.

Mize is also big on the sales funnel. Free reports to ebooks to audios to personal coaching. And like Steve, he has several thousand articles on ezinearticles.
Big diff between me and Sean. First of all, I'll have to be reincarnated 20
times over to be the marketer he is.

Second, he doesn't do the affiliate thing because he doesn't want to. I
don't do it because I can't be bothered with the hassles of trying to
recruit affiliates because trust me, they just don't come to you.

So instead, I just put all my effort into marketing my products.

And Sean's got like 10 times as many articles out there than I have. I
don't know if he writes them all or outsources but the man is a machine
and I admire him a whole lot.

Sean does thing very different from your typical gurus.

You see instead of launching a ebook or software Sean does coaching and consulting. His service is not cheap either. Sure he would have made more with affiliates but the guy is already making over $100,000 per month. That could have just been 10 students paying him $10,000 per month for his coaching which is just a couple of hours per week!

If we're talking about marketeers - what about Richard Branson
I agree Branson's a remarkable marketer. However, in his autobiography he's very open about the fact that he has been lucky along the way, including right at the start.

Branson was quite lucky to have signed Mike Oldfield without comprehending really how unique Oldfield's music was, or how much the public would take to it. The breakthrough successes of Oldfield's Tubular Bells album, which put Virgin Records on the map, was the good fortune of being played in its entirety on John Peel's BBC radio program and used without authorization in The Exorcist movie. Neither of these had anything to do with a push from Branson or his company. The Tubular Bells concert only came off because of Branson's personal sales pitch to Oldfield ("Would you like to have this car?"), not because of marketing.

Here's a published excerpt of that part of Branson's autobiography:
'£20 for tubular bells? They'd better be worth it' | Mail Online

Of course Branson built on that success, but the initial success was as much due to good luck as to hard work, planning, or great marketing.

Branson's story about sending the letters to the wrong people is in itself worth the price of his autobiography, a must read for anyone interested in marketing or chutzpah.

Thats a very good point but I guess at the heart of the "Virgin" brand now is wacky marketing that makes them stand apart from the competition.

That's why Branson immediately came to mind when I thought of marketeers.
