Hey,

I've always wondered this - what are the legalities behind selling a 'summary' of a book or product?

Of course, everyone should consult there lawyer before going ahead with this. I'm simply wondering.

Anyone have any constructive input on this subject?

Definitely seek advice on that as it would depend on the content of the summary. If you are giving away bits and pieces discussed in the main product then you would want to very very careful.

I'm no lawyer, but if that isn't a "derivative work" within the meaning of the law of copyright, I don't know what is!

I think you've already given the most constructive input there can be, yourself, when you said that nobody should do it without checking with a lawyer first.

They speak about fair use as well as JK Rowling's case about the Harry Potter summary book.

I do see whenever I fly that there is in the skymall catalog ads for the business books summaries that they have been selling for years on audio.
