Making Your First Product: How Do You Find a Niche to Target?

Hi.

I have been lurking around this forum for quite sometime now and I finally believe that I have learned enough to set up a simple squeeze page and build a list. I know what steps to take when it comes to building a list and managing a list but I can't figure out where to start.

My problem is: I can't figure out what niche to target.

I know most people say to target a niche that you are passionate about...

But what if you are not passionate about anything?

I have no particular interests and I am not particularly good at anything.

The only thing I am interested in right now is making money online but I don't think I could target that niche since I'm just beginning my internet marketing career.

So if someone could help point me in the right direction I will greatly appreciate it.

Thanks.

Alright, I hope this does not come of douchey but you need to rethink this. You want to make a product about something, thats suppose to help someone without actually knowing about the niche? Your signature says you are a content creator but your having trouble creating content or at least choosing what content to make. Make a product on content writing. sell it here, clickbank and anywhere else you can come up with.

I think that would be your best bet!

If you are not passionate about anything, choose something that at list you have some interest on it, and it's not a boring subject for you.

    For example:
I am a mother of 2 kids, so i know a lot about pregnancy, labor and raising kids
and i can wright a tons of info on that subject, but, before i had kids all this was not relevant and not interesting to me.

I am a photographer, so i can choose any photography niche or sub niche and understand what i am doing there.
On the other hand, my husband can read hours about Forex trad, and he find it really interesting, but there is no chance i could work in that niche, because it's really boring for me.

    And so on.
I think you got an idea, even if my English is very difficult to understand.

You said you are not passionate about anything, yet you have a passion for making money online? You can make a list showing people how to make money online by freelancing, affiliate marketing ,etc. I'm sure you can write about this subject.

I must warn you though, MMO niche is highly competitive.

    Hi Tim,

Personally I find that 'follow your passion' advice of limited value.

A better direction is to think about is your specific mental/emotional strengths and type of work you would enjoy being involved in every day e.g.

If you have a strongly mathematical/analytical left-brained bias in your thinking, that lends itself much more to technical/software/analytical fields e.g. SEO, software development, platform-oriented addons (like Wordpress).

On the other hand, a right-brained thinker will ENJOY the daily of action of CREATING, possibly public speaking and strategy-oriented tasks.

Those are generalisations but you get the idea.

Now obviously you can hire people with specific skillsets or abilities to do the things that you aren't naturally good at but it helps a lot if the daily action of your business is COMPATIBLE with your natural personality.

To make it work when you choose, make sure you SPECIALIZE and deep-dive into that specific area and fully commit to it - that's what has real value (assuming the area has good monetization potential).

In my own case, I'm only interested in technology/software insofar as the tools that they can provide for executing ideas or developing business. Others however, love technology's 'tecchieness' for its own sake.

    thanks for the advice guys.

@MYDCOM I mentioned that I don't think an internet marketing niche would be good for me since there are so many people targeting that niche anyways, it would be difficult to get anywhere. Plus, I don't really have any "proof" of earnings to show people since I haven't made any from internet marketing yet.

@jake454 Of course I will study a niche thoroughly before I make a product. I just don't know which niche to start studying. I like the idea about writing a short guide on content writing though - I will remember that.

@Terry Kyle I found your advice to be the most helpful so far. Thanks. I guess I just need to analyze my personal strengths and weaknesses and figure out what I would like to work on.

I am interested in the following topics: fitness, self improvement, self employment, video games, pets, travel, relationships, and electronics (computers, mostly). But there are already thousands of products on each of the topics i am interested in...

I really appreciate the responses guys, I am so close to finding my niche!

...How Do You Find a Niche to Target?

There is a lot more to consider when "choosing" or "finding" a niche to target, but imo the best answer is to choose any niche that is in high demand with established competition.

This simplifies many considerations that are fundamental to success. If its in demand, it has traffic. If it has competition, its a niche that converts. Choosing a niche should not be difficult.

The issue that usually drives this question, yet remains completely understated, is that of traffic generation. Until you can tame this beast, niche selection is largely irrelevant. Let me illustrate:

You want to choose a niche that has less competition, because you want a better chance to rank for your keywords phrases. Rank = profits, right? Wrong. The magic equation is:

      traffic + conversions = profit

The correct question to ask then, is not "How do I find a niche I can rank for" (the understood question you asked), but rather, "How do I generate traffic to my funnel?"

      Go Where The People Are

Instead of asking "How to find a niche to target," I would ask, "How to find the targets?" Once you know how to find (reach) your targets, then the niche part is automatic - you give them what they want.

Your fundamental premise is that you cannot out rank established merchants in the niches you mentioned, thus you are genuinely asking "How do you find a niche that you can actually have a chance to rank for?"

If your only method for traffic is to try and find a niche with little or no competition, where you can easily rank via SEO, then you are severely limiting your prospects. Is it possible to do some deep KW research and uncover some gems that you can easily rank for and make you $200/day or more? Sure. happens all the time. And if you try my KW Research Tool, you can uncover 1,000's of these Money Keywords in just 6 clicks of your mouse! (50% off for Warriors!)

Let me illustrate it this way, to make one final point. (You didn't try to click that link, did you? :p ) Let's say you have already created your product; your squeeze page and auto-responder are all setup. Now what?

Do you have the traffic part of the equation worked out yet? If you do, then my post is mostly irrelevant, my apologies. But I see this question asked many times, and without exception, the underlying problem is not a question of how to choose a niche, but of a limited mindset (and fundamental lack of understanding) on how to generate traffic. The paradigm has shifted away from SEO, and its no longer the only way to generate [free]traffic.

Think about it this way: If you knew how to get traffic in any niche, which niche would you choose? Solve the traffic question, and you can have any niche you want.

    Thanks Tim.

For what it's worth, think about a sub-niche rather than the general rat race in any niche e.g.

    not weight loss

    but

weight loss for women after pregnancy
    or
weight loss for women over 50
    or
    weight loss for overweight teenagers

    etc

the principle applies to pretty much any niche - just make sure it's big enough to build a decent business out of and not too narrowed by, for example, geographical focus

If you're not passionate about anything, then you've got bigger problems than trying to find a niche. You mean to tell me you have NO interest in anything whatsoever? I find that hard to believe.

Think of niches as specific needs and wants. I had a client who thought he wasn't passionate about anything, then I found out that he LOVED drinking beer. He ultimately turned that love of beer into brewing his own. Don't limit yourself to the online world either.

Finding niches and mining them for gold has been my forte because I've been doing it for so long. If you're not sure where to start, then what you should do is spend a day or two along and away from distractions and figure out what you're REALLY interested in or what you'd LIKE To be interested.

With the right marketing know-how you can make money in nearly any niche that is already profitable. First get clarity on what you want and then think about what you'd like to jump into.

It isnt easy to find a niche, a good way to start is to write about what you know. Try to find a niche that suits you best, and you will sell.

Actually you do have a particular interest..as you clearly stated "....The only thing I am interested in right now is making money online....."

Look, don't sell yourself short. You can enter this market despite just beginning.

For example, you can approach from the angle of being a beginner and building a list based on what you've learned. You can offer a review of a list building product by actually following that product's strategies. You can do a case study of it and make that your product.

Remember, you have an interest in making money online and you are going to list build so because of that you're willing to go through the marketing ups and downs that come with it.

Another example...why just stick to list building...since you're interested in making money online, you won't have a problem researching this market to see what wants and needs it has. You can offer services to the make money online market, such as graphics, seo services, website creation......wait...you say you don't have those skills...then do it by arbitrage.

Find people who provide these skills (warrior forum and other places) and find warriors who are in want/need of these skills and you have a service providing business.

So based on your interest, as you stated, stick with the make money online market...offer a quality product/service that is in demand...you can make a living doing that right here in the warrior forum.

Ok so now look for a sub niche in one of those niches. A niche within a niche. Or try combining two of those niches together and see if you can come up with a new, unique, niche.

Or you can browse blogs, forums and chat rooms in niches you think you might be interested in and see what people are talking about or need. What are people tweeting or facebooking about, discussing on message boards and gossiping about in chat?

Specifically you can check out things like Google Hot Trends, Yahoo Buzz, what's trending on Twitter, eBay Pulse or Amazon Best Seller.

Personally I don't go for obscure niches with no competition because those can be risky and there's no proven demand. I stick with evergreen niches, that I know make money, where I know people are buying and find a sub niche I feel comfortable with. Even if it already has lots of competition I don't necessarily avoid it or think it's not worth it because ranking will be difficult I just think of ways (without the use of SEO or Google) that I can drive traffic to it, i.e. paid traffic, forum traffic, video marketing, social media and work in that manner.

It's not the way that everyone works but it does OK for me.

Again, thank you all for the help.

So what I managed to summarize from the posts in this thread is that I need to find a niche that i am interested in, which also has a high demand. And it is okay to target niches that are highly competitive.

And of course, I need to consider the traffic source for my niche as well. So in general a good niche needs to be something you are interested in, something people are interested in, and it should be easy to get traffic to it.

Is that all I should be looking for in a niche? Feel free to add more...

So now I need to analyze my interests and look for a sub niche that I am interested in and then research that sub niche to find out if there is a high demand for it and then figure out how to get traffic for it. Did i get that right?

I would choose niches I am passionate with.

What kinds of magazines will you choose if you wander in a book store?

What books do you like to read?

What things will you do if you have free time?

    etc.

Check your daily behaviors, and you will find your favorite things, and these are your niches.
