Does "As Seen on T.V." add Credibility to Internet Marketing?

O.K. We have all seen some of the internet marketing "gurus" branch out and start their own infomercial products most recently Jeff Paul comes to mind...Often I find these infomercial products seeming to be watered down overpriced fluff....

I always asked myself why would anything on T.V. really add credibility but I am obviously missing something because I see that famous little red rectangle everywhere...

For example....

Look at the following ad piece for a very well known business entrepreneur, author and teacher :

Now ask yourself would you be more apt to buy such a product because of the little red rectangle that says "As seen on T.V." ?

Think about this for a second....There is a lot of crap on T.V. so why would it add credibility

Has any of my fellow warriors done any research into this...Is it more of just the psychologocal factor because if you can afford to advertise on T.V. then your product must work? Is that all it is?

Thanks

Gavin

  • It's essentially a social proof play.

If "they" let it on T.V. then it must be legit, right?

And if you can advertise on T.V. then you must have lots of money... and that (in theory) reduces the risk of you being a scammer.

But like anything, it's worth testing. I've seen these type of things lower response

    • Put yourself into a consumers shoes. I've seen that on a number of websites and my first instinct is "This is legit!" Of course that's just my first instinct. But if I can be affected like that, think of the millions that or less marketing savvy. I think it's a great psychological marketing tool. In fact, I would start using it if I lacked some integrity.

Funny but when I see As Seen on TV, I think of all the cheesy products that you can only buy on the cheesy TV commercials for those products. So seeing that makes me instantly think of .... cheesy.

    • Me too, it makes me think of JML type products, overpriced and rubbish, or the overhyped 'infomercials' we get on late night satellite channels (in the U.K) for more overpriced useless tat, full of 'but wait, thats not all' and 'order now and you also receive..', and lets not forget the timeless 'ask your operator on how to get the overpriced useless upsell...'.

But maybe thats just me being cynical and not responsive to hype.
  • Depends on what it is.

I've been on national TV as an expert in my niche. That added HUGE credibility for me in two ways:

    a) For my customers, it was a huge endorsement and made me seem "real"
    b) For my business consulting clients (who want to be on TV themselves), seeing me on TV gives them hope that they can do it too.

The real benefit of media exposure isn't necessarily the actual live segment. The REAL benefit is that you can slap logos and the video replays on your site and email auto-responders.

When comparing two similar sites, all other things being equal, the "as seen on TV" guy will win out.

    That's my experience anyway.

  • Best thing to do is split test!

It has worked for me - increased sales after to having a 'as seen on TV' type of message.

    cheers ,m

    • Given that it worked for you, presumably you mean "after"!?

    • This thread is funny...lol

I seen a As Seen On TV in the WSO section today and just had to
      purchase it.

Did I purchase it because it said that or was it because I believed
in the person behind the WSO?

Answer: She's a Warrior and the product is right up my alley...
Did seeing as Seen on TV help me in my decision making process?
Not really. But it didn't hurt the offer either.

      Hi Maria,
      How have you been?

I really appreciate all the responses....It really has made me think about how it is truly important to "get in the consumers" shoes more and dump all my own head trash about how I may percieve things...

Giving things more thought I have come to the conclusion that of course something being on T.V. definitely helps and reduces the tension someone may have about making a buying decision.....IF...(and this is a definite IF) the product was presented to speak and SELL to the individual in a at least semi-coherent and credible way...

Of course there have been things that are "As Seen on T.V." that have turned out to be junk or total scams and have left a bad taste in peoples mouths...think Don Lapre, think William J McKorkle and the list of others...

I guess T.V. can definitely be a mult-edged sword that can cut several different ways...

    Thanks again for the input

By the way has anyone actually bought Jef Pauls infomercial internet marketing package?....Did you notice the "pitch girls" all had low cut shirts with big boobs?...Of course this was intentional to appeal to the male reptillian brain...LOL

  • You're missing the point totally.

It's not about adding creditibility. Getting on TV is about mass advertising to millions of people.

Do you really think GoDaddy advertises on the Super Bowl for creditibility?

Do you think Ebay or Amazon or Overstock runs ads on prime time TV merely for credibility?

Do you think insight sponsors a college football bowl game for creditibility?

Running an infomercial has the same goal, it's just way cheaper than running prime time ads, sponsoring college bowl games, or buying time on the Super Bowl.

Actually I think you missed the point totally of what I was saying

I was Speaking and asking whether or not the little red square Logo that says "As seen on T.V." adds credibility to internet marketing such as this internet marketing product ... As Seen on T.V.

I know marketing on T.V. is powerful advertising....I was asking specifically about the psychological aspect of something being on T.V. and using it as a credibility builder in your othe... than T.V. advertising with the whole "as seen on T.V." logo and whether is really adds to credibility and actually higher conversion ratios....Get it? :p

  • Us on the warrior forum may laugh at the "as seen on tv" logo.

However for many it may be seen as legitimate.

@GavinLively LOL thanks for that video.

    • "It depends." this always seems to be the answer. Of course any question can also be answered with "test it".

Doesn't matter what anyone says. If you test it, then you will know what works and what doesn't.
  • I am pretty sure that most of the sites that I've seen using that logo are outright lieing (there are some people in one of my niches that I know are doing this fraudulantly).

When I see it, I immediately think it's a con unless there's some sort of proof (video, etc), and it makes me question the integrity of the marketer. Which in turn causes me to question everything else on their page/site. Needless to say, I do not buy.

*edit* this does not mean that I assume that the rest of the market reacts this way.

    • Hmmmm?

As Seen On TV.....appears to have more credibility then this OP and a well slipped in LINK that just so happens to be the OP's as well....that led me to the OP's page which contains "As Seen On TV Google Adsense"..etc etc.

I suspect this entire OP is a well disguised "As Seen On TV".... Affiliate Link"!

Your suspicion is wrong (see my response above). I do apologize to you for the perception I may have given though.
