I hit the jackpot with Reddit - 3,000 visitors in one day but NO SALES. Why?

Hi all,

I'm new to Warrior Forums but have lurked for a long time. This is one of my favorite sites on all of the internets!

Only a week ago I launched my very first website. Like many others in the past who have posted here with similar concerns, I thought I did everything right...unique niche, demographic studies, professional website with call to action, lots of product information, privacy policy, easy checkout and so on.

I've been an active member on Reddit for years and found a perfect subreddit to mention my product line. Well, the Reddit community embrace me and upvoted my contribution like crazy. Within minutes, my Google Analytics was humming in overdrive.

By 11pm tonight, I had 3,009 unique visitors today but... no sales. I am at a complete loss as to how I could have so many visitors and no sales. Yes, I checked to make sure my credit card and Paypal processing were operating correctly.

Any advice for this newbie would be greatly appreciated. grabpak(dot)com

THANK YOU!

Site looks great! I know Reddit is just a "hang out" site that a lot of people browse during work. 3k is a lot of visitors but it could just be some bad luck right now since most people on Reddit aren't looking to buy anything?

I'm not very experienced tho, just the first thing I thought when you mentioned Reddit!

Nice looking site, just the wrong place to promote it. And I would have said that without having read your story.

I'm thinking survival or surviving some kind of disaster is not an uppermost concern for people at Reddit.

People tend to not think about unpleasant things until it's a fire. That is to say, when it's looming or they've experienced it and won't make that mistake, again. The mistake being not having survival gear.

Forget about it. But it's a good experience because you can look at your Analytics and see what products or pages attracted the most people. Then maybe you can focus on promoting that - just an idea.

Well, not really entirely wrong place to promote. Reddit has a subreddit called Shut Up And Take My Money which you are allowed to promote your products in this section to buying members.

I suppose even in that subreddit, perhaps it would depend on the niche you're promoting for good results.

As some have suggested, or at least one person, maybe going for the optin would be a better approach at Reddit.

Yes, "Shut Up And Take My Money" is where I posted. Hey, good learning experience for me and it cost me nothing. Who knows, maybe the Reddit traffic will help with SEO.

On the other hand, since you got 3k so fast, perhaps the key is finding out what converts in that subreddit. If possible, then you could really kill it.

I wouldn't ´t call it a day just yet. It was probably not the time, but some might come back later.

The preparedness crowd are not impulse buyer type of people. And there is a lot of disinformation around, so most are paranoiacs as well.

You are going to have to work hard to establish authority.

I checked out one of the items, the bronze grabpak. It looks beautiful, but.. you are not saying what the first aid kit has, for example. And the food bars, are not in the picture, so not even a hint of what brand and composition you are selling.

The product is a great concept, but for someone who thinks his life can depend on it, it is not detailed enough.

In my opinion, you should warm them up first by giving them something like a free report. (Maybe something like "The 5 Crucial Must Haves in Case of a Natural Disaster") You must include a clear call to action in order to get them on your list. Once you get them on your list, you can them sale to them more than once.

Yeah, the thought crossed my mind that most people are simply surfing Reddit at work. I guess after a week of traffic figures around 120 visitors, it got me really excited to have such a dramatic increase in visitors.

Hopefully a few of them bookmarked the site and will return for holiday gift shopping.

Reddit users are usually more internet savvy than the average guy browsing the net. Their traffic works, but not for every niche. You really gotta hit home with your page or product to profit off reddit.

If you are not looking to build a list even though that is best in my opinion. Here is one forum I found with Google .http://www.disasterrecoveryforum.com(think I can do that) Not sure if they allow you to have a signature, but they are out there. Get in get a Sig and start posting. Keep an opt-in form offering a free newsletter in the side bar and drive traffic by posting on that forum. Point being you need to target your niche where they are. You should see better sales there. Or find a disaster site that offers banners.

Most surfers at Reddit just hang out at Reddit, not search products to buy. Consider another traffic generation methods which have high convertion rate.

This is the MAIN kicker here! Reddit, as far as I know is more like a social site. You do NOT go on any social site with a sales or marketing mind-set, this is why no one bought.

Social sites: Build trust, build reputation, brand awareness etc....THIS is what social marketing is about, not selling!

Wrong place to expect sales my friend, it's like trying to sell sand to the people in the Sahara desert.

There is a show that comes on every night on A.M radio called Coast to Coast. It is basically a doomsday show and has about 20 million listeners. If you could save some money and advertise your survival kit there, you could possibly strike it rich

This is the audience you want to reach -> Home - Coast to Coast AM <-

Try testing a few hundred bucks on your local station that carries the show, and see how it goes

What is the bounce rate? What how 'deep' are the visitors going? Did you check your analytic?

Site looks good, but if you open to a suggestion. You have your description of your product far down the page, its below the purchase links.

Move the "why you need' part above the 'our products' part.
Makes sense. First explain the need, and the benefit of your product. Then show them how your products fulfill that need. Your doing it the other way around.

maybe it was untargeted traffic, you need to find what interests them. or find your niche's hub.

I'd love to hear the bounce rate. I've had a few sites reach reddit front page and get insane amount of traffic, but bounce rate that day was around 87%. Reddit users usually click, look, then leave.

Bounce rate was 92.35% I'm learning more and more as each day pasts. I guess I have my answer right there - most didn't stick around to check out anything else on the website.

I tried to advertise on Reddit, too. Tons of clicks -- maybe one sell.

Everyone on that site is there to look at memes, learn obscure facts about celebrities, or argue politics and religion.

A big chunk of the reddit demographic is 20-something dudes. I'm guessing a lot probably have a low disposable income. (Could be wrong, though.)

Unless you have a cheap, eccentric product like something out of a ThinkGeek catalog, you probably won't do too well advertising on reddit.

Here are some things that could be turning people away from buying...

    1. You have way too many options. Options are good, but only in small amounts. Here's what I would do...

Remove all of the options except 3. Give them only 3 options on the front page. Offer 3 different pricing packages for each one that offers better discounts if they choose the bigger packages.

    2. Fill the rest of your site with a story...

Tug on those emotional strings. Put a story on there about how your product saved someones life. Bring up the problems with them not having an emergency bag in case something bad happens.

You want your customers to feel like they need your product to be safe.

    3. It's almost Christmas time...

Offer holiday discounts or put something on your site that says "Makes a great gift. Make sure your loved ones are protected."

Get them thinking about their loved ones and how vulnerable they would be without this product.

I won't spill the rest of the beans for you, because it's important you learn on your own. I hope these helped you or at least gave you some ideas to implement for yourself. Good luck!

      Reddit is like this.

You go into a party. At the party, there are 10,000 people. You walk in wearing
the most outrageous costume with a sign that says, "You can get this costume
      for just $10"

      Nobody buys it.

      Why?

They don't care. They're not there to buy a costume. They're there to enjoy
      the party.

The people at Reddit probably don't give two shits about surviving a disaster.
Sure, they'll check out your site, but that's about as far as it goes.

It's called non targeted traffic my friend. That's what you have.

If you want to make sales, you have to look for "targeted" traffic ... people
who ARE looking for what YOU have to sell.

Otherwise, you're just wasting your time.

This is why building a list is very important! Trying to sell directly to a first time visitor is VERY HARD.

If you build a list - then provide value to them and generate trust, when the time comes to sell a product they will ALWAYS follow.

People buy survival stuff out of fear. Some marketers have a problem with using fear as a motivator but there's nothing wrong with it at all. Every type of insurance people buy they buy out of the fear of loss on one level or another.

Now to your site. "Anything Can Happen, Get a grab pak and be prepared." Is that the best you can do? A happy, smiling family all muggin' into the camera? Ugh. The other slide with the tornado is slightly more like it but both fall flat in a big way.

You've got a lot of real estate up top going to waste. You need to write a short, to the point paragraph describing something right out or hurricane Sandy. How many people would have paid BIG for one of your kits had they known that was coming?

That's where you need to go. The site is clean and presentable but it's more of a catalog than a sales page. Just look through the news of the last week for anyplace in the NE that was hit hard by Sandy. Then pick a handful of stories, create a composite scenario people can read about in recent news and relate to immediately. Follow that with a call to action. That's what's going to sell your GrabPaks, not smiling faces. Good luck.
