Teachers pay teachers.com - marketplace! Should we step in there?

Hi

I was reading an article few days ago about a teacher that made over 1mil dollars selling courses on teacherspayteachers.com.

I made made some research and I found that this marketplace is for teachers wich publish courses for kindergarden to highscool and university and makes some decent cash

The thing is that this is a professional marketplace and theoretical and ethical if you're not a teacher you shouldn't be there... but...

...what if you have the knowledge or you know somebody who has the knowledge..or maybe an outsourcer... to create great content, I guess it can be done.

Teachers are not marketers and if you come with some good products and a good marketing, I think you can succeed.

The only question that remains, is it ethical?

Thanks for the tip. I will look into it.
Is it ethical? If you have the qualifications, I don´t see why not...

And seeing as many people are way more qualified to teach on a subject than someone who happens to have gone through the extremely simple process of getting a teaching certificate, you are probably qualified!

I am glad you mentioned this site. I haven't seen it before. They say this in their faq:

Who can sell original and used resources on the site?
Any teacher from any discipline at any grade level, from preschool to high school to college to continuing education. You can be a current, former or retired teacher or even just a natural educator who creates teaching materials for non-traditional subject areas. Anyone can sell used materials, too. This is an open marketplace by design.

This does look like a promising marketplace. As a former English teacher, I would be interested in checking it out. I could see several of my products here.

That's a very interesting idea for a marketplace. I had no idea such a place existed

Now, I don't know about selling courses there, but running such a site... now, that's something worth looking into.

I homeschool my children, and I love this site for pre-made lesson plans and ideas for hands on practical activities. I wouldn't have a problem buying from a non-teacher if their product was good and served my purpose.

      Yeah but ....
How many IMers here have ever written a school course that was actually valuable and usable for a classroom? The majority will grab some PLR crap and public domain crap and package it up to sell to real teachers teaching real students. Those with a teaching background or those who have in depth knowledge about a topic that teachers want to teach their students might do a decent product, but like the Amazon Kindle Publishing debacle, many will just try to game the system to make a fast buck.

I'd like to think that buyers on that site would be astute enough to know what they want, and even if IMers came on board, I'm not sure it would be the money spinner that they'd like it to be.

When I buy, I look at the credentials of the seller (could be faked I suppose) and their other products, and I'm quite happy to leave appropriate feedback after my purchase. If an IMer came on board to sell rubbish, they'd not last long I don't think.

I am on TPT and another site like it teachersnotebook.com

decent sales, but its competitive products need to be up to par. If you are not familiar with common core or other standards good luck getting any sales.

BUT..... I do have an idea........ how about teaching teachers internet marketing. Anyone with me on this??? PM me, let's talk.

I have a teaching certificate to teach ESL, ha ha.

I know this an old topic but there was a WSO about it before this topic started. I know because I reviewed it! (Although, he forgot to tell me when he launched as he didn't have a date when I reviewed it for him, so I don't know if I sent him an email with my review or he was supposed to remind me when the launch was so I could add my review to the thread. He didn't remind me. Sorry Joshua!).

But yeah nothing unethical about it if you have something that will actually be useful and helpful to teachers. Nothing wrong with it at all.

This could actually be a good niche if you think about it. Helping teachers make more money (I come from a family of teachers and I have several friends who are still teachers and many of them often get part-time income to get some more money) on websites like this.

I was going to try creating some stuff for the site but I forgot about it. But only because I have knowledge of what would work well in a classroom and was coming up with ideas for stuff I would have liked to use with my students.

So, yeah, like anything, do plenty of research of partner with someone who has the knowledge before you start putting out products. You don't want to put out sub-par half-assed products. That doesn't work!
