Twitter - Google's Next Purchase?

Hey gang,

The rumors are out...

Google could be interested in sucking up the upstart and trendy twitter:

Google Reportedly in Talks to Buy Twitter - FOXBusiness.com

This should be interesting to watch, it means that the service that has yet to turn any profit, may have legs after all.

Me...

I still don't get it, micro blogging?

LOL

It makes perfect sense doesn't it? Twitter is likely very attractive to the big Goo right about now.

But I agree about not getting it. I plugged in, sort of got rolling with that whole follow/be followed deal but then felt sort of stupid posting my limited character blurbs... ended up deleting my account as I just don't see the value.

But clearly millions do see the worth. Even newscasters and talk show hosts are plugging their Twitter pages now.

I like the implications this has on the more broad integration of Web and other communication technology, even if I have no personal interest in "tweeting" along.

      I can't imagine a world without Twitter

I only hope that Google empowers it rather than kills it.

If Google was smart I don't think they would buy Twitter. Youtube had huge amount of traffic showing videos and it was a community. Twitter is a community that is somewhat addicting but hasn't stood the test of time. The thing is Youtube already was pulling a small profit before Google took over where Twitter isn't making a dime.

This would be a great acquisition for Google, there are a lot of different directions they could go with Twitter.

It would be a good buy if:

    - They can get a good price therms
    - They can monetize it without "disturbing" actual users
    - They can integrate it fast with actual services (like adwords)

It would be a great buy for Google... but I think Twitter will hold out for a while to get a bigger offer. Their user base is EXPLODING right now and I think they know that if they sell now they might've got double or treble what they get offered now by holding out for another year or so.

Many of the people that actually USE it (rather than spam it!) are quite hardcore and have some sort of Twitter app running in the background all day long.

I signed up a year ago, but didn't really "get it" until recently. Now I have it running all day and get updates on those I am following every 20 minutes or so!

I don't like the idea of big companies buying all the other big companies out.

Hope they buy it and we discover a way of monetizing it.

"Perhaps one day I'll outsource my tweets!"

I'm there for you! Will tweet for food.

A client who found me on Twitter just bought a package of FIVE press release from me! I love Twitter so much, if it were a person, I'd marry it and have its little Twitter babies.

    Scot, I swear...Twy it, you'll like it!

Google buying Twitter would be bad.

Google wants Twitter because Twitter is a competitor to Google. Or, rather, it is an up-and-coming competitor to Google. Twitter is Google when Yahoo was Google.

Google has enough control over search as it is. They don't need more. They need competition. And MSN and Yahoo aren't providing enough competition. Google isn't worried about MSN or Yahoo. Google is worried about Twitter.

Dan's content is irregularly read by handfuls of people. Join the elite few by reading his blog: dcrBlogs.com, following him on Twitter: dcrTweets.com or reading his fiction: dcrWrites.com but NOT by Clicking Here!

Dan also writes content for hire, but you can't afford him anyway.

One of the cofounders of Twitter was on Colbert and he implied that they were not interested in selling the company but continuing to grow it slowly and gradually building a trustworthy product first then experimenting with various monetization methods.

He said they would start experimenting this year.

They are following the Google blueprint here, building a solid user base, a quality product, then figuring out how to monetize it. Kinda like Problogger who used to write decent content but does nothing but pimp other affiliate programs now it seems...

*Sorry, that might (or might not) be unwarranted*
