Multiple Niche Sites vs Authority Site

I have a dilemma.

Now, I was planning on creating an authority fitness blog but there are a few factors that stand in my way.
  • Lack of Funds
  • Don't want my face or real name out there
  • SEO Noob

I'm poor at SEO but I've managed to rank for certain kws on small niche sites before. And I didn't spend much money(domain+hosting). But to rank for kws on an authority site you will probably need spend quite a bit of money down the line.

So would just doing multiple niche sites still be a good idea?

Authority all the way, couple it with Youtube.. You look like you can back up your claims with your own physique. Go for it

Edit, this thread might help: 1000 unique visits a day

I started up a main blog 3 months ago that can still be used as an authority site but I've started to look around and I've realized it's going to take a lot to receive a lot of traffic. Bear in mind I have limited funds for that.

That's why I was thinking niche sites as I think I can rank them quite easily for next to no money involved. I could always funnel the traffic off them to the main blog I already set up.

My humble advice.. Put everything into generating traffic for your main blog - as opposed to generating measly traffic across loads of sites. It takes a lot of work, but ironically a lot less than trying to promo many sites simultaneously.

To make it in this game, it does take a lot.

SEO newb/lack of funds - Really don't need a lot of funds. Research & time can negate both of these concerns. Harder, more time - yes. But not show-stoppers.

You can still do well with an authority or niche site w/out revealing your self. But you can brand your self more powerfully and develop a following if you do. Anything's possible, but people will react better and faster if they know who you are, your face and name.

But to rank for kws on an authority site you will probably need spend quite a bit of money down the line.
No, not really. You say 'rank for kws,' there are thousands if not millions of kws available. Kw research s/w is not comprehensive by any stretch. Don't let that stop you from pursuing an authority site on any topic.

So would just doing multiple niche sites still be a good idea?
It really was never a bad one. Seriously, and neither is the authority site.

You can choose one niche site as a more tactical business, shorter term, and develop an authority site for longer term, strategic model.

Either one is fine - totally up to you.

I understand that, but realistically how am I going to rank high on Google doing off page SEO for an authority without decent capital?

Blog networks, press releases, directories etcs aren't free and I've tried finding guest posts but most fitness sites haven't been interested.

As the man said, there's major competition in the bodybuilding market. You cannot compete for the keywords they're using. So don't.

If you want an authority site, then you have to be smart and thorough with the keywords you target for your site content.

Your capital is elbow grease; time and work.

What you do is find out how to structure your authority blog categories according to your phrases. You can start with about 5 with three pieces of content in each one. You can accomplish more than you realize with excellent content. Word count closer to 1000 than 500.

Use social media, intelligent and proper blog commenting. Not true that press releases are not free. Sure, it's best to have money for a good prweb campaign. But there are plenty of others that are free. Do a search here and you'll find excellent info for using free press releases.

Write articles for syndication at ezinearticles.com. There are quite a few tons of info here about that. Look up Alexa Smith for her posts.

OK ,let's say I wanted to rank for a competitive keyword like 'weight loss tips', you're saying I could do that without spending money on SEO?

It's not free, but you can always exchange money with hard work. None of these links are impossible to create without any money, just need to dedicate the time.

You can find Blog network submissions and directories submissions for free in some squeeze pages in exchange for opting in to their mailing list. you can write press releases yourself and distribute it through free distribution sites. you can get all sorts of gov and edu backlinks alone, and keep trying to make guest posts on other blogs on your niche (start with the small ones that are desperate for quality content)

Yeah. I agree with others here that authority sites are the best way to go.

It's a pity you don't want to reveal your face. I'd imagine a personality driven fitness blog would make much more money.

I know a PT who's getting articles posted on big sites, so guest posting is one way to drive traffic if you don't have the cash.

I agree with the warriors here.

It's getting difficult everyday to rank the sites that are created out of thin air with no value. Even if you go with emd.

Second, it's would be really hard to position yourself in the market. Let's say if I google "How to get 6 pack abs" or something and if I see two websites. The first one is how2get6packabs.info and the other website is about.com. I will click on about.com

I would suggest to go with one authority site instead of 5 sites targeting one keyword each.

You do not need to initially spend much to start your own authority niche site/blog. If you are not that knowledgeable in SEO, I suggest that you start reading SEO/IM blogs and forums that will help you learn the best and most updated SEO techniques.

Once you ave a fair amount of knowledge in SEO, you can construct your very own SEO plan and perhaps hire someone who can help build links for you (if you have the budget), following your SEO plan.

As for the author name, you can create a pseudo name pr identity instead if you do not want your real name to be recognized. There are a lot of affiliate marketers who are doing this so you do not have to worry.

You'll have a much easier time getting SE traffic to an authority site with great content than a small, over optimized five page site.

It all really depends on whether you like to write and interact with your readers because you need to commit to frequent updates if you want to see consistent results.

The main thing with on page SEO these days is to create categories and subcategories and then make a few contextual links between your pages.

But DO NOT make it obvious that you are trying to target lots of K/Ws that you have found with the Google Keyword Tool.
