Making PDF's

Hi All
Just a quick question and probably a rather stupid one. When you guys make your e-books, how do you get them in PDF-format? I still have an old version of MS Word. I don't know if you can make PDF's with it these days. I make my PDF's by copying the word document, pasting it in Openoffice and then save it as a PDF from there. It works fine for me, I was just wondering if there is another way?

    You could google for "convert to pdf" or "pdf convertor"

    I think that would get you started

    Check Primopdf

    It s very easy too, you simply print your word document, and you choose primopdf printer, which will give you the pdf.

    What you're already doing (using openoffice) is what most people do when it comes to converting PDFs.

    Like sabluuk said you can google it, or you can get a print driver which enables you to print to PDF. I know there was a free Warrior Forum PDF print driver, but I can't find it now.

      OK. Thanks to everyone. Some very good info here. Just wanted to make sure if PDF's still start life as a MS Word document these days or if someone has invented a "direct PDF writer" or something.

        If you have OpenOffice... then why not write/create the original file in that program? (instead of doing it first as an MS Word doc > copy > etc.)

          A very valid point. The reason is: I made a little program for myself that is aimed at making it easier to put together an e-book. MSWord plays a role in the process.. Maybe at some point I want to make a cheapie WSO for rewriters.That would only make sense if many people still use MSWord when making eBooks.

            Maybe you can open the word doc in Open office as part of your process, then export as pdf from Open Office.

    Also, if you buy Adobe Acrobat, it adds special buttons to your Word interface that let you create PDF-s of your documents. Works on Office 2000 too.

    I use primo pdf.
    Very simple.
    You can just drag and drop whatever document and it converts to pdf.

    Also if youre going down the ebook route you can ad password protect and no-copy
    etc etc

    The easiest way that I do it is, download Open Office - it's exactly like MS Office.
    They have an option where you can download your word document as a PDF.
    Just Google it. It's free.

    I use LibreOffice (Open Office alternative fork, I like it better than Open Office, it's a matter of choice I guess)

    Writer, found in both OO and LO, has a button you push called PDF. It saves a PDF.

    I'm sure others have already said it but, I use OpenOffice. I can load any Word doc in there and then have it generate PDFs. It's free.
