How important is keyword research these days

Hi there,

In terms of SEO, how important is it to do keyword research. A few years ago, the method was (generally) to use the Google Keyword External Tool with a exact match to see levels of traffic.

What is the best way to determine how difficult/what the best keywords to rank for are in a given niche. Is there some helpful software to help, and what factors should I ultimately be looking for? Domain Age? InTitle?

I've been having a look around, and in the SEO section there is a sticky about keyword research, but it's two years old so not sure if still all relevant.

That's still the best way to do it. To rank for Bing/Yahoo you need to use the Bing tool.

It did not really changed that much. Keyword research is still important up to these days and with all the innovations in the internet.

I have been keyword research for a long time, the research is very important but the rules are changing on what keywords to pick and how to address using them once you find them.

The whole keyword landscape has changed night and day. More to come, will be posting something about this soon

I think keyword research is still relevant. It should be used more sparingly, however. They should be added to high quality content that offers solid niche information.

I don't think exact match domains are necessary. The focus now is more on quality of content than anything.

KW research is very important! If you don't know where you are, you aren't going to know where your going...or how much competition you will face.

You can check fivver for someone to give you an indepth report. This will save you time / hassle. Or you can do it yourself.

Check Keyword suggestion tool — Google suggest scraper — Ãœbersuggest for useful keywords, make a list, put that list into google kw tool, see your search volume.

Put a KW in quotes on google and see your competition. Click the last page (eg 10/10) to make sure Google isn't trying to fool you. Sometimes they say there are 1M results, but when you click the last page, it refreshes and you find out there are only 1,000 results!

Use SEO4firefox or SEO quake to check the page rank of the first 10 results in Google. If the average PR is higher than 3 then it will take more time / effort for you to outrank them and get to page one.

    Hope that helps,
    Azu.
