Reward offered for Mentorship

(I wanted to change the headline, but couldn't figure out how to do it, so I've just reposted with the new headline. Hope that's ok)

The Headline says it all guys & girls...

I've been plodding along , reading e-books, listening to podcasts & watching videos, but I really am struggling here. Take the example of some of the really great posts that have been put up here, giving "59 steps" or "my step-by-step..program" etc. Now those are great resources, however I find myself getting stuck on minor technical details a lot of the time (I really do suck at the technical aspects) and other times, it's probably just analysis paralysis or information overload, but the bottom line remains that after roughly 2 years of "trying/ learning IM", I still haven't made a dime!

Now, since I am on a non-existent budget, there's just no way that I can pay a fee of any kind, so I am willing to offer a profit-share to a prospective Mentor.

Please know that, if anyone is willing to take on this challenge, I would expect it to be a very hands-on type of mentorship, so it might make more sense that my mentor live somewhere relatively nearby - which means Johannesburg/ Pretoria, South Africa.
Of course, if you're based elsewhere, but we can find a workable method for hands-on training/ tutoledge, then I'd be more than happy to consider it.

This is a genuine/ sincere request and even though I'm exceptionally aware that most Internet Marketers (contrary to the popular picture of the laptop on the beach) are very busy people, I would be eternally grateful (and you will eternally own a share of my profits), so I'm really hoping that someone with a fair success record, will see the potential for mutual benefit in this.

Sincerely
Arthur

        Ed.

Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately (for me), I've been trying to do exactly as you say for almost 2 years now and it hasn't worked. There are just too many aspects that I know nothing about. Also, I have a deadline: My wife & I have decided we'd like to emigrate to the USA in just under 5 years' time, but the only way we'll get in, is via the Visa Lottery (Fat Chance!) or as "Independent Business People" - which means I need a minimum of
$ 1000 000-00 in Capital and I'll have to employ 6 people (at least).

I look forward forward to having your lifestyle.

  • Arthur,
Mentors are like preditors, They want you to work while they make the big money. Don't get me wrong some may have good intentions, but believe me as soon as they start making money you will be left behind. There are some very good systems out there. It's true you are going to need some start up money. I will tell you that the best things I have found on the internet were free or very low cost. If somone says they will be your mentor do you really think they will take the time from their family and lifestyle to do it. Again believe me they won't. I spend time at my campsite, my boat, on the golf course all with my family and friends. None of them can believe I make the kind of living I do online. Ofcourse some have started to learn how so they can have the same lifestyle. Being wealthy is not what most people think. There are lot's of people who have way more funds than I do, but I don't owe anybody and I can do what I want when I want. When I started 5 years ago I was in debt, Broke, and I had no freedom to do the things I wanted. Enough about me this is for you. Find somthing from somone who has made it and run with it. Do it to the letter and don't stop. You will succeed if you want!

It will be hard to find a mentor unless you already have experience.

A lot of top-level marketers already have mentors as well, but they are already making money and just want to find out how they can improve their business and make more money by somebody who has already proven to be more successful than them.

It really comes down to why would somebody want to invest their time mentoring somebody unless they were getting compensated in some way.

I know that it' sounds pretty raw but that's really the truth and the fact.

Now there are mentors who will take people with no skills but they'll be having you doing all the grunt work where there will be no way for you to get ahead to start making money on your own.

It really can be a catch 22 situation.

        That's just it....
They do get rewarded. Just not immediately.

Think about this: Let's say I agree to 10% of all future earnings as compensation, and given that I MUST have $1000 000-00 in the bank in 5 years' time, I would need to give 10% to my mentor, so I'd better earn $1.1 mill or so. Of course this means that my Mentor gets
± $100 000-00. And who says I don't become the next Yanik Silver/ Frank Kern/ Eben Pagan etc.

Don't forget, the agreement is for 10% IN PERPETUITY! So, there's lots of payment. It's just performance based... So, the better my Tutor does at training me, the more he/ she stands to earn.

I think someone with virtually no skills whatsoever, that the mentor would end up creating virtually the whole project and then he would be the one spliting the profits with the person being mentored.

Don't get me wrong revenue shares I think our fantastic way to partner together and work with people, but working with somebody who has no experience whatsoever, the mentor would have to take into consideration what their time value would be invested in the project.

I think that's really all what it comes down to.

And in many cases risk not getting paid at all.

I think you may be able to get some experienced internet marketers to help you but it will have to be on their terms.

What you really need to do is reword your post to ask:

            1. Is there an experienced internet marketer who I can work with and help from long distance? (Forget in your area. Learning online marketing doesn't require face to face contact).

            2. I'm willing to work free for the first 30-90 days to prove my worth and develop the skills necessary. If you give me instructions I will follow them to the best of my ability and won't be bothering you with a ton of stupid questions.

I'll perform the task, show you what I've done then go back and do it over as many times as you say is necessary making the changes you suggest until I get it right.

I understand that the time you take training me is worth far more than any profits I create for you doing work you assign me so I won't expect any monetary rewards AT ALL until I've developed the skill to justify those rewards (in other words until I can perform tasks to an exemplary level without any of your input necessary).

Even then I understand that I'm competing with outsources from India who you could easily have trained in the same amount of time so I won't be expecting premium rates for performing tasks you can outsource to someone else.

            3. Long term I'm wanting to develop the skills of a successful internet marketer myself so in the medium to long term I'd be looking to take on projects you don't want to do yourself and share in the profits of those projects with you.

I understand that many successful internet marketers have a whole pile of product creation and launch projects that they'll never get around to doing and once I have the skill I'm more than happy to take those on, get them running from start to finish and take 10-25% of the sales from the launch.

Because I'm not living in a fantasy world I understand that when you launch a product a high percentage of the sales go to affiliates and getting 20-25% of the sales represents over 50% of the real profits for a project.

The guidelines I've set out above will also give you some insights into where YOUR head needs to be if you want to get a mentor without paying upfront.

            Kindest regards,
            Andrew Cavanagh

Instead of outlining what you want, what you need and what you require....would be much better to tell what you can do. What skills have you acquired that you can trade for some help or mentoring?

No mentor is going to sit by your side day after day telling you each step to take. No one is going to make themselves available to you 24/7 - even those you pay high mentoring fees don't do that. Be specific on WHAT you need help with - and WHERE you are encountering problems.

Outline your strengths and highlight what you realistically can offer in exchange for someone donating time to you.

How many articles have you written and submitted?
How many hubpages and squidoo lens have you built?
How many sites have you put online? Blogs?
Do you know how to submit sites to directory sites or add good links to sites? How about Social sites?

Have you done at least some of these things in the past two years? Except for a low cost domain name and hosting - all are free to do.

Make your skills the product you have to offer in exchange for time from someone else and you might find some people willing to trade. This changes the focus from "help me" to "have I got a deal for you".

          Hi Arthurt,

What Kay says is absolutely correct. You have a command of what you don't know, now you have to take what you do know and bring in the piece of the puzzle that will balance out the picture.

I've said this before and I'll say it again, if you want to 'make money online, find stuff people are giving away for free and sell it on ebay.'

But if you want a BUSINESS, it starts with a business plan. I have a book on this that I sell, but I will give it to you free. If you follow the directions in the book and you make a real business plan, I will mentor you. I don't live anywhere near you, but I learned over the phone, email and instant message from the person who mentored me.

I am not going to ask you to promote or sell anything of mine. I will help you create your business plan, marketing plan and financial plans and then I will help you to create products and so on.

I have a 21 day webinar series starting on Tuesday, September 2, 2007. I will give you free access to it as well.

Send me a PM and I will give you a link to download my business plan book and the information to be in on the webinar.

Arthur, if you were an extremely hot, attractive woman I might have considered it especially insisting on the hands on part...

Okay, being serious for a second....

What's your risk in all this Arthur? Since you are not willing to pay every month because you say you can't shows me you don't really want to be successful rather just lead to success without you having to think at all...

The only way to really learn and come up with solid ideas and be inspired is by thinking and doing which takes action.

Someone with a bit of risk on the line (i.e. monthly fees) is going to work hard and do everything possible to make it work...

If you are serious about your offer then show me you have what it takes... so far I've just seen a lot of words but no action.

    What have you done?

Go write me 50 articles about internet marketing (Yes you will have to do research) that are each 500 words long.

After that I want you to write 50 articles about Blogs (You got it, more research) same length as above...

If you cannot do that for me then forget it... If you're not going to pay me then you have to work and oh, by the way those articles will be just the start of your education. Once you have those done I'll demonstrate how to take those articles and turn them into other forms of media.

    Then we'll learn about traffic...

That's enough, go get to work Arthur... Show me how bad you want to be successful.

Mike, I can see you're from the old school. Wow, that's the way it's done
if you're going to mentor somebody for free.

And you know what? Most people will tell you you're crazy and go look
      for somebody else.

      Really enjoyed your post.

        Thanks Steve, appreciate that!

The only other time I was called crazy was just last week... I'm calling over 500 people who responded to an email I sent my list. I'm calling them one at a time and asking them one simple question... "How can I help you?" The people I've called so far are surprised I've even called.

The reason I was called crazy is because I'm not selling them anything, just helping them get past something they are stuck on currently.

Oh, I even told them about my new free website for them to get even more great tips. Like a good marketer, it is part of my strategy but I do honestly give them my best stuff when I call them... So far I've called 60 people.

I'd tell you about the rest of the strategy but the rest is a secret... for now

        Mike Hill

PS. Arthur... I'm successful on the internet and yet I still work my a@# off... Why? Because I love what I do... It's not hard if you're willing to work and be persistent.

If somone says they will be your mentor do you really think they will take the time from their family and lifestyle to do it.
Absolutely! You will find that many experienced warriors help new marketers all the time.

I agree with you that you need to be very careful about shelling out money to hire a mentor but this place is no different than anyplace else... scammers are out there. You have to learn to separate the wheat from the chaff!

I have never found cynicism to be very conducive to success. I always do my due diligence when analyzing a relationship but I tend to give people the benefit of the doubt until I am proven wrong.

I am a firm believer in giving people proper respect first. I am not so arrogant as to think that anyone should have to earn my respect!

    Take care!

Just got back to my PC. Was on the operating table only abot 7 hours ago, and feeling a bit like a traiwreck, but I couldn't wait to get back here and see what great advice I received in the meantime (PS: If my spelling/ grammar etc is a nit off, blame the anesthetics)

Frank, I understand your point, but I still believe the fact that my mentor still get's a profit share long after his training has stopped is quite an attractive offer.

Kay, you too make very valid points, which I've taken to heart and would be more than willing to discuss with my (potential) mentor.

Marcus, that's an extremely generous offer! Thank you! PM follows soon.

Andrew, again, I totally accept that I'm the guy asking for a lot, while having very little to offer in return (right now anyway). And I'm always more than happy to discuss terms with a potential mentor. I just figured that a sharp marketer, would see the long-term benefit of my "percentage of all future profits" offer, i.e. put in some time with the newbie now and reap rewards forever.

      Mike (& Steven); I'm desperate, so I'll consider a sex-change...LOL (Just kidding!)

Don't forget, that money is not the only form of payment Mike. Too much of a long sad story to share here, but I do have a "day job" at this stage, which keeps me very busy and pays most of the bills, but I hope the fact that I'm here, replying to you guys 7 hours after having some growths cut out of my ear canal, proves that i have the "want" & commitment.

Great concept - calling your subscribers directly, btw Mike. My "day job" happens to be industrial sales, so I do know a bit about customer service & doing things a little better/ different to the competition.

Chris: You are the kind of person I try to emulate (don't always succeed, but I keep trying...). Thank you for your kind words. Right now, they really do mean a lot.

Once again, to everyone that's commented, I'd like to say thank you for taking the time. i will take all your words to heart and one thing I assure you: No matter how or when I do, I WILL SUCCEED!

      Sincerely
