Phone Number - or not?

Reducing barriers and making things easy for prospects often entails simple sign up forms where only basic details are collected.

Do you ask for phone numbers?

Does this put off prospects? Is it better to build a relation via an email campaign then ask for a contact?

Anyone got data on phone number vs no phone number responses on squeeze pages??

Does it depend on niche?

  • I guess it depends on the niche. In general, I'd be less likely to fill out a contact form if it demanded my phone number. Making it voluntary is another option.

  • The more information you ask for the less optins you'll get
but the more qualified they would be. That's the rule of thumb.

So decide on quality vs. quantity and then set your original bar as high
    or low as you determine.

Keep in mind that you can also woo those "low bar" optins into
giving you more information later on as you develop a relationship
with them and they build confidence in you.

  • Hmmm! The truth is I've not done the split test that you are looking for right? but I will tell you what I feel about collecting phone numbers, Most list builders that do ask for phone numbers will end up getting so many fake telephone numbers as most subscribers would feel insecure by strangers having there numbers, except if you have built up a very strong relationship with them already.

  • excellent responses. I guess the answer is make it optional. Those prospects willing to take a call will be the more active and ready to go. Those who do not, will need the "woo".

    • It depends on what your selling. If you were doing something local you might be remiss to not ask/require a phone.

  • I'd make a convincing case why you need their phone, and that you would not abuse it. You'd get better response.
  • Me personally, when I go to forms that ask for my phone number, it does NOT put me off as long as it's optional. I agree with others, depends on niche. If high ticket items, then sure, ask for it.

    • Make a strong reason why they should give you their REAL phone number.
One way of doing it would be to split your free offer in two parts.
For the first half, ask for email address only.
But in order to receive freebie's remaining part, they'd have to give you their name and phone # so that you could, for example, tell them how to make the best use of it...
  • You can have it in the form but make it an optional fill.
  • Don't make it mandatory. In fact add some wording like...

If you would prefer to be contacted by phone, please enter it here (optional):
