starting a membership area for 17 a month any tips?

Hi I am starting a membership site for my ebook and I will be starting out charging $47 for start up and $17 per month after that. I offer a ton of free material and a 12 step video coach. It is in the dating for women niche. Any tips or am I around the right pricing?

It'll be smart to get them to signup for the membership with a super low price of just $1! It's all about being trustworthy, so if you really believe that you have a lot to offer and there's a lot of value inside, get them to signup with a low price point (maybe even $9.95) first, and then charge $27 per month if there's enough content inside.

thanks, mike - i like your idea. i was wondering about the same thing at the moment. my only concern: isn't it then that people just jump in, use or download your material and run away?

what do you think about 1$ for e.g. 7 days, then more?

My only problem with the really low start up cost is that I will be paying out of pocket for ppc through sites like pof, bing and a couple other places ( any recommended sites to use I could use them) and If I can't bring back what im putting in then I am going to bottom out before I can grow to have the business start to pay for its own marketing. The cost per click is rather pricey in the niche that I am working in. I like the idea of doing the low price but I am also worried about people signing in and taking the product and running.

    1) Break it up into packages + bonuses.

    2) Introduce price-cutting strategies at the start for "founder"
    members.

    3) Raise the price to lock in your "founder" members - tell them
inside that prices are rising and they are lucky to be in the low
    prices.

    4) Add weekly content.

    5) Build your internal community, organize social events like
    contests etc.

Those 5 should get you started...

I like the idea of making the start up members feel more special and building the trust thanks for the idea. now what do you mean by packages and pricing.. something like offer 9.95 they get the book and 27 a month gets them the course, 27.95 gets them a bundle of ebooks plus initial book and video course with the same 27 dollar monthly cost?

    Hi Guys,

    I agree with Mike Hersh

You need to offer them a trial membership for a low price for the first month and then make the price something like $17 a month thereafter.

They can join your membership site and see what it is like for a month and if they like your site then they will continue paying you.

Make sure that you have a clear way of how they can unsubscribe on your site.

This will give them the confidence that they can leave anytime they wish.

I do this. My membership offer is a $3 trial for 14 days access. Then it's $27 per month after that. The content drip feeds each week and I use Easy Member Pro as membership site software.

You actually just answered my next question of weather or not I can drip feed my video course at 1 video per week so that they have time to soak in the info and use the course correctly to get good results. I will recommend the software to my web designer because he is putting it all together starting this week since im finally done with all of my graphics and material. I'm pretty excited to see how the sales video converts because I have 3 test vids to run in the first month.

Yes, works for me but I use paid advertising to drive people to the sales page which you can see in my signature below. I do offer two valuable free gifts during the trial period and yes some people join just for this reason and then leave. 72% of them stay because I aim to offer valuable content every week.

If you don't mind me asking what kind of conversion rates do you achieve with the low price sign up? and are you using a sales video to get the sign ups?

thanks colin, very interesting. i thought it might be an idea to just take "serious" people on board and ask for e.g. 97$ for the first month and 27$ for the months to come but your approach makes also sense.
what kind of paid advertising are you using?

I have experimented with various methods and best to date is offline in publications which are specific to your niche. You get very focussed traffic that are prepared to spend money.
There are some great low rates if you look around. Also never accept rates on rate cards - always barter. Check the readership and calculate cost per reader to give an indication of value.

I agree, offer a low cost or free entry and then make revenue on the monthly charge. I would automate the renewal, and make it opt out, rather than opt in.

I was also thinking about using the sales video and offering at the regular price then a back out page to offer at a low start up cost for the membership area. I am confident that in my market my product will stand out and my graphics have turned out pretty good and I think they stand out along with the free offers on purchases. I would really like to get some input on conversion rates for sales on pages with a sales video. I haven't really been able to get any answer of how well videos do for sales. All I know is that the high end of conversions was around 3 percent for the long hand sales letters. I also know that conversion rates have gone up with sales videos so if anyone know this answer or even a round about answer that would be amazing! thanks

Memberships are tough to sell. Not sure if i would offer $47 upfront. Maybe $27 or $37. Then i would offer $10 per month afterwards. Make sure your content is stunning enough to make them want to stay with your membership.

yes my main ebook and video course go hand in hand teaching exactly what the market is looking for. I also will give free weekly up to date article, vids, ebooks and other things. I was thinking about a lower price I really don't want to go any lower than 37 though because it truly will be a ton of value with the sign up. not to mention the ease of access to loads of material that would take them forever to find on their own. I will offer it at a lower cost on back outs though to avoid losing the sale.
