Vbook is the New eBook...

So I've been playing around with embedding video into PDF documents for a new guide I got coming up.

I didn't just want to name this an eBook (the old mighty eBook just doesn't carry much value by itself these days), so I decided to get some name ideas from other marketers on Instagram and Facebook.

We came up with Vbook. What do you think?
#ebook #vbook

There's a lot of different software that uses the name Vbook. One of them is an ebook reader for Android, if I remember correctly. If I were you I'd look at a different name that will clearly differentiate yourself. I'm too tired to offer any great suggestions right now, but if it's video in a pdf, maybe call it something like PVF (Portable Video Document)?

PVF - Nice! Thanks for the input. I'll keep that in mind.

The video player is embedded in the eBook PDF and "on play" it stream right to the PDF is crystal clear HD. Its definitely a cool way to package a product.

I've been making these for years. They are called interactive eBooks, not my name but the proper name. There are lots of them floating about, especially interactive children's eBooks.

The disadvantage is you usually end up with huge PDF files.
The advantage is you can have the videos auto-play when you turn the page.

Also when you get more into interactive eBooks it's good to put opt-in forms in them, pop-out sales boxes and pop-ups on closing. With a bit of effort you can make each line read aloud as you point to it.

For kids books they are great, for anything else they seem to annoy people, which is why I generally avoid making them these days. You can stream the video as well (not easy) but that causes a whole list of incompatibility issues on different reader's computers.

Any special software needed to create these Colin?

For exit pop-ups you need PDF Pop-Up-Pro. For the rest it can all be done in Adobe Acrobat Pro Extended. Before you get too excited though, file sizes are a huge problem.

With kids books the advantages are big enough that the file size doesn't matter. For instance you can have the pages turn like a real book, and the words under the picture start reading themselves, while the picture comes to life and starts moving. Interactive eBooks make great kids books.

          Thanks,

The file sizes wouldn't be an issue since what I'm looking to do has an educational angle to it....

Basically looking for an android alternative to iBooks with the interactivity of iBooks if that makes sense...

For Android I use my business partner Sergiu's KIRA software. I pestered him into building it as I wanted the same as you lol. You could message him if you are interested. That is just for Android, though.

As many have said, PDF's with embedded video make for a large PDF file.

              Too many disadvantages with that.

I use Viral PDF Master to embed optin forms, customized message, images etc in any PDF.

You can do so much with this software, and no one is really doing this....

I ofter use this strategy instead of a 'squeeze page'

I had a guide floating about for ages with an opt-in form in it, which I made using Adobe as a list building experiment. It got a lot of opt-ins, too.

It's a beast to set up in Adobe though, so Viral-PDF-Pro looks a good option.

A good advantage of having the opt-in form in the PDF is that you have no reluctance on the part of the potential readers to opt-in, as they aren't asked until after they have seen the value.

Sounds like an awesome idea... but as others are saying - surely it will just make the download a whole lot longer?

If you've managed to compress it so it downloads at the same rate - then I think it's an amazing idea!

So if the video embedded on pdf, how effective is it for the people to print it offline?

The purpose of having an ebook and video separate is to cater to both those who have slower Internet connections and don't want to have to wait hours or even days to download a video, and those who have high speed and generally prefer video to ebooks.

Embedding video in pdf files in every case would lose sales and opt-ins imo.

Yea, I'm not a big fan of Naming it Interactive PDF. Which its why I am in the hunt to name this a unique file format. I like vBook but If its already being used I guess we are going to have to find a way to spin it. LOL.

File size is not an issue if you stream the video. Look at my examples below. Compatibility can be an issue, but can easily be overcome with a quick update to your desktop and mobile PDF readers.

      Thanks for your input.

Your right, embedding is not the way to go. Streaming definitely is. I like the idea of embedding an optin form. I'm going to look into that. Thanks bud.

If you embed the videos, your going to end up with a huge file. Definitely not the way to go. Streaming the videos takes that file size way down. Look at my example below.

Unless it is to QUICKLY demonstrate a SMALL item that can't be better done in text and photos, I would say FORGET IT! I hate the way this stuff is going.

One company is lucky I listen to ANY of their ads. If I miss an item, I may NEVER hear it again. There is NO way to go back! I recently thought OK, I will renew their newsletter, but HOW!!!!!????? I had to wait for that stupid video to complete! Often, in such a case, I FORGET! I DO have better things to do!

Would the user require internet access to view your videos, or will you offer the videos in flash format that they can download to their desktop?

    • I love Vbook and your layout is amazing! That's a terrific idea. Great job.

I would have two options. For people with super slow connections, you might have a regular ole ebook with links to the hosted videos. And for people with quick as lightening connections they can handle the Vbook!

You can also do exit pops or redirect to a sales page on exit. Sweet right?

I want to know about your vbook when it comes available please! Thank you!

Yes sir, Internet Access is required. LOL. These videos will also be available via a members area where they can stream them as well.

Thank you very much my friend. I am a designer at heart and its one of the product creations processes that I enjoy doing, even though its tedious work :-/.

The vBook format would be suitable for people with slow connections as the videos are streamable and will not be embedded into the file.

The Majority of my Target market for Niche Flipper wouldn't have much of a problem with slow speed so I am not to worried about the file size.

What I am concerned with however is how much resources the file will take once loaded onto the users Desktop or Mobile device. This is an obstacle that I've been testing and fixing as you can see from the screen shots above.

Working on creating my early bird optin page :-). I'll definitely let you know. Thanks again for your kind words my friend.
