There are some business models that don't require an opt-in. There are even some that don't require a website at all.

It depends what you're trying to do.

If it involves or includes "promoting products as an affiliate", though, not having an opt-in is dramatically stacking the deck against yourself. There are few hundred threads in this forum with titles like "What's The One Thing You'd Do Differently If You Were Starting again Tomorrow?". Take a look through a small sample of them. Seriously - it's one of the most helpful things you can do. You'll find that one of the things they all have in common is that they're full of replies from long-established, successful Warriors all of whom give the same answer: the thing they'd do differently, with what they know now but didn't know when they started, is "start to build a list for email marketing on day 1". There are reasons for that.

If you are getting into IM you definitely want to build a list. A list is a long-term asset so it wouldn't make sense to forget about it.

As other before me have already stated, you really should build a list. Otherwise you will need to start from 0 with each product you promote. Think about your own online buying habits. Do you prefer to buy from someone who out of the blue offers to sell you something, or from someone you know, like, and trust because they have built a relationship with you over time?

So, could you become successful without an opt-in list? Probably only for the short-term.

@shawoon98: Even when flipping domains or working as an outsourcer/contractor it's wise to build a list of prospects...will easier to get hired again, sell sites again to people that bought from you in the past etc.

      I'm on Amazon's list.

Amazon sends me e-mails all the time... most of the time I ignore them, but now and then they send me an offer so compelling that I stop what I'm doing, click on their link and buy the product.

Now multiply that times the millions of users they have.

The funny thing is, it requires so little effort to ask permission for your customer to be on your list; why not do it, if only for that reason alone?
