list building and contact

I have just recently started work on building lists (if you have not started, get going - i wish I had listened 6 months ago to "those in the know") and the lists are not that big...yet

my question to the experienced ones - how long should i wait before sending out valuable emails to the list? i don't have the money to hook up with aweber yet, and have created my own scripting for automated and manual email contact with my lists. Each new list member gets an automated "thanks for signing up" email once they have opted in, and then I do send out an additional "i just want to express my thanks for your interest" emails after a few days.

Do I wait a bit for my list to grow or what? I am thinking that if you use aweber, you send out the emails based on a time line right?

Thanks
Dean

    Hey Dean,

Don't send out a "I just wanted to express my thanks for your interest" e-mail, it makes you sound like a begger. THEY should be the ones who are grateful to be on your list, not the other way around.

However, a way you could work this is that you can say...
I just wanted to express my thanks for your interest. As a special thank you, here's a free gift:
=> Direct Download Link, no offers, nothing.

Explanation of free gift goes here.

I hope you like it, blah blah.

Look out for the next e-mail within a couple of days which will explain __(something awesome and topical)__ .
That way, people are suprised and start to see you as an authority figure, not to mention trusting you.

After that, send out valuable e-mails every 2-3 days or so.

If someone unsubscribes using this method, don't worry, you've just lost someone who wouldn't buy water in the desert.

Thanks for all the info - i really appreciate it.

One of my lists has opted in and receive a free ebook for opting in - so with them, my first email gives the link again (if they missed it), more information on the website and what is available.

For the people that opt in but dont do the second optin (confirm email) - should i be sending them something at some point to "kick start" them to complete the sign up?

I don't think you can. If they haven't confirmed that they want to receive your e-mails then sending them an e-mail anyway is doing so without their consent and will probably make more people hit the 'Spam' button in their e-mail client. It's just a waiting game really.

Tips for high confirm rates, tested by me personally:
        - Have a short sentence under your opt-in form saying something like "Note: Please use a valid e-mail address, as this is where your value-packed free content will be sent", or something.
        - Instead of just "Email: [form]", name it as "Primary Email: [form]".

That alone will increase confirmation rates by almost double.

It also fixes the problem of people signing up using fake e-mail addresses just to get the content.

    Hi Dean,
When building your list your format should be set up already and the information inside if you are building an auto responder series. You should NOT wait for your list to get big before you start promoting. You could make your first sale from just bringing one person to your list.

The money is in the list however the list size does not matter. What matters is how you approach each person on your mailing list and get them to pull out their credit card and buy right now or to sign up for whatever you are offering.

    Best bet is to either...
    1. Create an opt in list with an auto responder added to it
    2. Always send a thank you email first that tells them what your list is about and something they can start doing right then and there to take action
    3. Broadcast messages once in a while or create a weekly newsletter keep the time and date around the same every time you do so. This way people start to expect your email and look for it

    Sean and James,

Thanks for the much needed tips. I'm a bit of a wuss when it comes to emailing my list.
I don't want to bore anyone into un-subscribing by mailing out too often and/or by sending rubbish.
