Organic Social Twitter Impression shift

Hello Everyone,

Kind of an odd question, but here goes. I am a junior data analyst for a firm in London. We have a client whom we do content marketing for, particularly daily twitter posts. Last year (2021) we were getting impressions in the 1 million +, but in May of 2022, our impressions went down to an average of 250k.

I did a thorough content analysis between the January 2021 to May 2022. Aspects looked into were character count, types of content (quizzes, links, threads, etc), images and responses and found that the changes were either minor or non-existent.

The drop in impressions seem to have occurred sometime in March of 2022.

The question that I have is if anyone knows of any updates that may of occurred within Twitter that could of caused this decrease in organic impressions.

Cheers,
-joshuahickman1987

I noticed that too, but I don't know if my experience will serve you, because my Twitter accounts are crypto-related, and the market has gone down a lot in the last months so I don't know if it's the change that you mention or the interest in this particular topic

May have been a bot cleaning regarding the Elon Musk interest in buying it? Have you been able to find any explanation? I'm curious about this too

    • Yeah, bot clean up could be a part of it now that I think of it.

There was an update that occurred right before the drop in impressions, but all the notes on the update mention an added feature rather than an algorithm change. However, there is nothing to say that they tweaked the algorithm within the update and didn't mention it.

However, with the update, they mentioned that they rolled it back (the new feature that is).

Now, my gut is telling me that if it is this update, then they could of rolled back the features and kept the tweeks. I will find the article and post it in a minute.

haha i doubt that, vintage Elon Musk is just bulls**ting about buying Twitter, just like how he inadvertently helped pumped Dogecoin and now it's crashed. But yeah who knows....

  • This was the update that I mentioned in my report on the subject [link removed by moderator]

I am open to any other possibilities of anyone has one.

Thanks for the report, I don't think there's many more possibilities, I will ask some people in my Twitter network though and I'll keep you posted. Have you notice if the rest of the metrics have gone down too? Like the really important ones, leads, sales etcetera?

You're not alone, I've seen the same trend for some twitter folks i know. I think the users' feeds got messed up by what they tried to do in March of this year, i read an article about it at the time.

They gave IOS users more control over what content appears on their feed, that's what caused the big drop. I think more people got to find out about personalizing their feed to twitter accounts they follow only when the change happened in march and the backlash started.

I think you have to work with the numbers you're getting now, increase the organic traffic LTV and perhaps things might change in the long run.

  • Cheers guys, already more information than I had to begin with. Currently on holiday, but next week I will have a look to see if I can find any other possible sources.
