Just starting out with IM. I can be pretty susceptible to "paralysis by analysis" and trying to be perfect and so one of the first things I wanted to do was find a straightforward plan of action to complete. I figured even if it doesn't get much in terms of results, I'll at least be on my way and will learn some of
the essential skills along the way.

I came across two threads which basically say to...
-Pick a niche through research on click bank etc and choose keywords with the help of market samurai/google analytics
-Do research to create content to help that niche
-Create a site with either a squeeze page or that sells products
-Drive traffic to the site

a)Do you think this basic outline is a good place to start for a first project to test the waters and learn some skills?

b)Squeeze page vs directly selling products (affiliate or your own) on the page that you drive traffic to.

One thread stresses the idea of building a list, providing them lots of content and building a relationship so that you can sell to them later but in the other thread he simply found some CPAs, ranked his sites on yahoo/bing by creating content and profited.

Which do you think is better? How important is building a list vs having a really good website that sells the product/s?
Should one try both building a list and having some sites where you just drive traffic to them and hope people buy?
If one works in multiple niches, should he/she have a list for each niche or one master list?

c) What other actions might you recommend a newbie be doing right away in order to learn and work towards getting results?

    Hi Justin,

I think you have a good outline.

I would recommend building a list, you can still send them to the affiliate offers in the niche you choose.

Choose an autoresponder company that best fits your need. Many will host the optin form for you.

I would recommend learning the basics of copywriting. That will be key in getting signups to your list and promoting your affiliate offers.

    Best wishes,
    Michelle

The one thing I would recommend you do is to create your own website and have an option for your subscribers to opt into your newsletter.

That way you can send them great content anytime you want and you can promote any products that you want to promote for quick commissions.

You can see what others have done in you niche and get some great ideas from them. I would subscribe to their newsletter. But please, never copy their content.

You might look at it this way: You need to develop a consistent revenue stream which will help pay for cost associated with development and deployment of your future products. In other words, when you're starting you need to initially focus on developing small, but many streams of income. This will help fund future projects.

The best way about creating multiple streams of revenue is preference. I have a combination of affiliate, adsense, membership and ecommerce sites. I developed them in that orders. Think of your individual site as assets and then classify your assets into a portfolio so you can determine your portfolio mix.

I often use an impact matrix to decide which project I want to undertake. Here is how it works.

1.) Draw a box with quadrants.
2.) Label X axis with Easy to Difficult (think about the time and skill needed)
3.) Label Y axis with monetize potential (Low to High)
4.) Determine where your projects fit into the matrix.
5.) Prioritize projects in this order: Easy/High, Easy/Low, Difficult/High, Difficult/Low (I tend to avoid projects that are difficult low, meaning they require a lot of time/skill and have low monetary potential.

    Hope that helps.

What rules do you guys follow regarding posting non-original content on your site? Things like CNN videos you came across? Other people's pictures, articles or videos? Anything that you didn't create yourself? I don't mean posting it and taking credit for it, but it is okay to give credit to the creator and still use it if you haven't asked for permission?

For example, if I want to start a blog about better sleep and I come across a really good article while I'm doing research, can I paraphrase part of it in one of my posts?
