How Feasible is it to a Make a Living Online...

by simply Creating Websites, Ranking them High in the SE's for expensive keywords, getting them good PR, and then selling them?


For example:

If I create a site targeting the keyword of, I dunno, "Best baby diapers"

now let's say there's 20 competing Ads for that keyword on Adwords, and the average CPC is $2-$3 a click (so let's say these Advertisers are spending $10-$20,000 a month to advertise for a high traffic keyword)

Now if I spend a year developing the site, getting it ranked in the Top 3 of Google for "best baby diapers" and manage to get it a PR of 4 - 5...

Would it be possible to sell that site later for enough of a ROI to justify a living of it? Assuming you do this over and over for multiple sites?


Basically, is there money to be made by building websites to target keywords with a high ad-base also targeting them?

      This is especially true if you can show a history of the sites bringing in some type of revenue.

          I think this would really just come down to how much time and work you were putting into the sites and what the market was willing to pay for them at sales time.
          I've seen a lot of people try this and end up working about ten times more on their sites than they would at a normal job only to make about half as much as they would of doing something else.
          Its always a gamble.
          A lot of research into the best niches and ways to increase your own efficiancy and productivity will help but like any other business you start its going to be risky at first until you have done it successfully a few times and are consistantly making money.

            Well if you are serious about looking into this as a business there are models for this out there already.

            Sitepoint Marketplace already has a huge section on selling domains, web sites (as in templates), complete new web sites, established web sites...

              If you're talking about developing sites and holding onto some of them relatively long term, your new site has to have a proven history of earning revenue before you can be expecting at top dollar for the site.

              And as far as flipping sites, the best sources I've ever used have been using website brokers to bring buyers to the table.

              Typically they already have buyers lined up ready to buy, such as Angel investors, and private investors.

              I see a lot of websites being flipped on line that already have some decent revenue and their selling them dirt cheap, when they can easily get a substantial amount of more money.

              A good rule of thumb is three times net yearly profit.

              Now that can be substantially more as well, or it could be less. But it's certainly not uncommon to get three times net yearly revenue.

                I make a living flipping websites - I don't keep them that long though. Here's what I do:
                • Create a simple affiliate website (using NVU and free templates or else Wordpress - I'm no techie)
                • Get it ranked on page 1 of Google by building up backlinks
                • Get it earning $300-$1000 per month
                • Sell it within 4-6 months
                • Earn $2500 - $6000 per sale on Sitepoint
                I only create and sell about 2-3 per month though as this isn't my only business model. I mainly just do it for fun because it's easy money (and a nice way to pay for a holiday or an unexpected bill etc).

                I do Adsense sites as well now and again if I come across a niche that pays well and doesn't have a huge amount of competition. You can sell a 25 page Adsense site earning $50-$100 a month for $1200+

                    Unfortunately I can't give an example as it wouldn't be fair on those who've bought my sites (I know for a fact there'd be people who would copy them outright).

                    I just use Spyfu.com to determine whether or not a niche pays well. If it pays $1+ and has 20+ advertisers then its usually okay. It's a matter of testing as well though (Spyfu results aren't set in stone). I had one site that I created as an affiliate site but it wasn't doing well at all - I added some Adsense just to try it out and found most of the clicks paid approx $.50. I ended up selling it for $900 even though it was only earning $30 a month and was getting very little traffic.

                    Affiliate income - usually Clickbank or physical products (e.g. diet pills).

                    I can usually generate a few hundred dollars in the first month (using strategies like article marketing and web 2.0).

                    I sell most of my sites within 4-6 months.

      Same as making a living any other way.

      If you want to do well at it, takes work, research, dedication, like any career. Some of us do quite well out of it its more than worth the effort.

      Like anything, depends on how bad you want it.

      Me? I couldnt live any other way!

      I see my girls more than any other Dads I know, and generally speaking can provide for them more than most as a bonus.
