How Do You Motivate Yourself?

Hello everyone.

Personally, I find it quite difficult to motivate myself to do anything productive. I prefer to just sit around and be lazy (I am working on it okay, don't judge).

However, a couple days ago I was sitting in bed aimlessly surfing the internet when I stumbled onto a blog about traveling.

After reading over some of the posts on different tropical islands and looking at picturesque images of crystal clear water, white sand, and palm trees, a thought popped into my mind.

"How come I am not over there?"

Answer: because I can't afford to be over there.

Solution: WORK

So I opened a new sticky note on my computer and set a date for a trip in 3 months time. I have about (EDIT: 10$ lol) towards that trip at the moment but I plan to work my a** off until I can afford the trip.

Where am I going?

NO IDEA. Just somewhere out of my city. Just a trip.

So I closed all the open tabs in my web browser, made another cup of coffee, opened Word, and started writing articles for my clients.

And that is how I motivate myself to work.

How do you motivate yourself to work?

Well i have a firefox extension called leechblock that blocks facebook, forums and many other time leeching sites from 9am to 7:30pm. If you install that and have the self control to not watch tv then you are pretty much going to work.

The disadvantage we have is we need to be on the internet all day which can also be a major distraction. That is where leechblock helps.

I have a similar extension for Google Chrome called "Nanny for Google Chrome." Serves the same purpose. Good stuff!

I set goals and work towards them. Some are big, and some are small. I find it easy to work when you're close to completing a goal, or checking something off of a to-do list.

      Here are my current goals:

Short term - Finish an affiliate site that I started building last week.

Long term - Buy a Lamborghini before I turn 40 years old

My fiance just rescued a Parrot, so my new idea, train it to become my manager and sit on my shoulder while I work. It can tell me not to be lazy and "don't quit until the project is done".

    Just an idea....lol.

I love this! Haha. I personally write down where I want to be months from now, and won't stop until I achieve this goal. I suggest writing down your goals. I makes reaching your goals 1 step easier.

Counting my money usually does it for me

Seriously, I login to my various accounts first thing, every morning, add up the total for the previous day and that, genuinely, is all the motivation I need to get cracking again.

Initially it was about having the freedom to work remotely and autonomously.

Then I achieved those goals and fell back to relying on money to motivate me. Didn't work - money is just a poor motivator for me for some reason.

I had to sit down and consider what really motivated me all over again. Now it's all about mastery and purpose.

    1) Having goals that are bigger than myself (for me this is for parents and future family
    2) Being as close to a master in my field as possible knowing that I'll never reach it

I rediscovered these motivations largely thanks to a book called Drive by Dan Pink. Here's an interesting little talk he did on TED about this:-

The most successful people in the world tend to be motivated intrinsically rather than extrinsically. As an example, the best software developers are usually motivated by the challenge of programming (or something similar) rather than the money they'll earn from selling the software.

For anyone struggling with motivation, get the book - it's a fascinating read.

Sounds a helluva lot like me a few years ago! First thing to do, set a destination. You HAVE to know where you're going for that diary entry to be effective. If you know where you're going, you'll know exactly how much it will cost, work out a plan and start getting things in motion. Good luck man!

I just only have three things on my to do list at any one time. In the three hours of productive time I have per day all I do is that list. In order to do that I eliminate all distraction.
Once those three things done I then add another three things and so on. By having a short list you do not feel overwhelmed and confused

I don't believe anyone is LAZY!

It is that they haven't found what it is that moves them, gets them excited and cannot wait to jump out of bed in the morning.

Find what moves you and go for that 100%!!!

We all have circles of people around us whether it be family, relatives etc that tell us the only way to live is to work for someone else 10 hours a day and then barely manage to pay the bills until you retire then live off nothing after that.

You must design your life the way you want to live it!!!

All the best everyone and hope you decide to live your lives the way YOU Want to live them!

As a part of my morning routine (along with a few cups of coffee of course ), I either listen to or read motivational business books, from authors such as Brian Tracy, Seth Godin, Zig Ziglar, etc.

I feel that it gets my mind going in the right direction.

Also I write down and read over my goals first thing in the morning and right before bed. It helps keep me focused on what I need to be doing, and it gets me motivated to achieve the standards I've set for myself.

      Hope this helps,

Necessity is my biggest motivator. I live in San Diego and the job market here sucks. My experience is in a super specific field with only one company in the entire state offering that kind of job. So writing (and soon marketing) is what keeps me fed and paying the bills.

As far as motivation for getting past that point and really earning good money, picturing the type of life I want is what motivates me. I have a "secret" Pinterest board with images that motivate me.

I saw this post and had to make a comment. Now keeping motivated, can be very difficult sometimes, my attention span was not the best before, sitting in one place, staring at a monitor for hours, and snacking whilst you gain weight, maybe that just me

Ok, when it comes to motivation, so important i believe to get your mindset right, what are my objective for the day, Like to have a list of aims which i wish to do or achieve by the end of the day.

Every so often i like to take a break. If you do every want motivation, Tony Robbins, that's the way, watch some videos of him and you'll want to carry on like a steam train.

I guess you need to train yourself and keep a positive attitude and remember, you can create anything, just manifest a thought and drive towards it and you will get.

You mentioned you wanted to go away on holiday. Take a picture from the internet of an ideal destination and print it out, Place it in front of you on the wall and look at it every day, whether directly or via your peripheral vision, the more you do this, the more sub conscious your mind will re-enforce the thought, and Laws of attraction and so on, You will acquire what you seek....

Create yourself a wish list, before you know it, you will get it all

P.s let me know when it all comes true, thank me then.....

There are three (3) things I do when I feel that my motivation level subsides a bit.

    1. Remember
First, I need to remind myself why am I doing what I am doing. Sometimes, I lose track before I almost forgot the important reason or reasons why I am doing what I am doing. It's simple. I will only have to remember the reason(s).
    2. Take Action
After reminding myself the reason(s) why I am doing something, I continue working on it. If it's about fixing all the details of the orders of our clients and sending it all to our Operations Team, then I go back to it and work on it. Nothing special but simply work on it.
    3. Focus
Follow One Course Until Successful. I have this tendency of jumping into another task without completing what I am currently doing. When that happens, I remind myself of the term FOCUS.

    1) Being able to be self employeed and never have to worry wheather my boss is going to fire me or not.

    2) Have the freedom to work when and where I want. How awesome would it be to go to that beach with crystal blue waters and work outside on your i pad or laptop. That is something you cant do with normal 9-5 job.

    3) Being able to support my future wife and family Even if the internet makes me some extra income not full time - it can still help like paying my car bill

While making my list of things-to-do, I always alternate between creative and mechanical tasks. For example, if my first task is to write an article (creative task), I will follow it up by mechanical task like updating my sites etc. This way I am able to focus better without getting bored or mentally exhausted by doing the same task.

Money is a great motivator. It's not the greenback we're after, it's what it can get us.

Anyone who is a 9-5er has to get up at a certain hour, be on the road at a certain time and clock in at 9 and out by 5. they'll get home whenever the traffic lets them. 5 days a week.

An online, at-home job should be no different if you want to succeed.

Set a time for yourself each day when you will work. That doesn't mean visiting Facebook or tweeting or lollygagging on the net. it means work. Set a time to take your break/lunch, then get back to work.

Make a list of daily to-do's and stick to it.

Money is a great motivator but you must be disciplined Once you see the $$$ rolling in from your efforts, however big or small, that will motivate you even more to stick to a successful plan of action.

      All the best.

Seeing the state the rest of my family is in. Stuck in corrupt thought that money just won't come to them easily. Rusted over thoughts of winning the lottery and striking it rich through methods that don't include working hard and smartly. It really makes me shiver to think of that. I can't be like that, there's just not an option. That's my motivation. To defy what's to be expected. To be the one that defines who i am rather than allow a shallow opinion of who i should be decide my fate.

I want a brand new Audi but the one I want has a huge price tag. I browsed Google, found the biggest picture of it I could and made a desktop background out of it in Photoshop. Everytime I turn on my computer its there, and if I ever get distracted the car is always there to motivate me. Its worked wonders for keeping me focused because I'm having that car next year! You could try this with anything your aiming for, like a picture of a beach, a new house or a car like me. If your in debt you could scan your demand notices and use them as your desktop. Or maybe a picture of your office or boss might give you the motivation to work harder!

How much is your time worth?

embracing responsibility will thus allow you to get more motivated.
What is very motivating is when you become your own boss and thus take responsibility and and embrace the fact that every decision you made was done by no one else but you.

What really helps is understanding that "getting rich" is a SCIENCE, not lady luck's fortune. You need only implement the science and the riches will come.
Part of that science is being self-disciplined and taking responsibility of everything you do and decide.
So keep hanging in there, if you haven't failed then you haven't lived yet.
    you can do it.

It was sad (mostly pathetic) I told him to get off his butt and go knock on doors until he had talked to 50 people, and do that everyday for a week. He started to tell me every reason in the world why he could not do something like that. So I asked him for his home phone number, he gave it to me, then I asked him his wife's name, very tentatively he gave it to me. I told him that I was going to call his wife and tell her one of two things 1. your husband is hiding in his office waiting for bankruptcy or 2. Your awesome husband is doing everything in his power to turn your business around.

He knocked on over 300 doors in the first week.

Dave has been a paying client now for better than two years.

If you can't afford a coach, get a friend or spouse to hold your feet to the fire

Staying focus is the key*. If my mind is set on something I try not to tell this to anyone until I achieve it. I read self growth articles and try to give my best at work.

    Inherently we are all lazy.

I try to do things that are fun. For example, I blog about things that I LOVE talking about and thinking about.

Also, I hate teaching in Korea these days, so that motivates me to get the hell out!

This is a very good kind of discussion before working with my client tonight. You know I am working offline as an account, and I am doing some freelance work online at the same time, I also maintain a blog. But sometimes, I guess that's natural that I am less motivated. So I need something to fuel me up - and that's through thinking about my plan and dream in the future. The number one thing that always motivate me is my dream to live my offline paperwork and concentrate on my online career - and I believe that it will happen in the near future, and that's always make me kicking everyday!

    Money motivates me.

Doing the things I like doing and outsourcing the things I don't helps my productivity.
