getting pdf to open in adobe reader

I am currently using Windows 7 and every time I download a pdf and go to open it, it opens in OpenOffice. Evcn if I right click and select open in...Adobe, it refuses and has the nerve to tell me that it is a damaged file and can't recognize it in adobe. Any advice as to how I can fix this?

Thanks

    Try updating Adobe.

Restart computer and try again. Open up Adobe and see if you can open up the file from the Adobe software. Try uploading to your webhost and opening the file in a web browser.

It must be that the document you are viewing is locked that it opens on OpenOffice. If it's not try downloading from source again and open it once more using Adobe from the choices from the pop-up window.

As RogueOne said, try updating adobe. There is a list of programs to open given extensions. New candidates either set the type, or ask for your permission to set types. THIS is how you can set defaut browsers, for example. The last attempt wins. At some point, control of PDFs was directed to openoffice. BTW the table is used ONLY outide of programs providing support, so you can still open a PDF file in office if you are in office and open it from there, and it supports PDF. Windows 7, for example, doesn't support PDF so IT will use that list to determine what program does, if you try to access PDF from THERE.
