Lost all Motivation - Need Help!

I went from making $3k per month to barely $100 per month now. I got caught up playing a video game and didn't give any attention to my online marketing ventures now I'm finding myself pretty strapped for cash. The only problem is I have very little motivation to get back into building websites and doing SEO knowing that Google will just roll out another update and I'll be back to square one.

How do you guys keep the IM "fire" burning and continue pushing on, especially after taking a big setback?

First get rid of your gaming system. I bought a PS3 a couple years ago, and have never played it, I use it as decoration for the man cave. Second, money should be more then enough to motivate you. Third, to hell with Google, there are other search engines and methods that will bring you money...

      Alex,

I've had this problem several times. Come up with a plan on how to start making money again and learn how to scale this up by hiring an outsource team. This way you can have others doing the majority of the work which will then give you time to play video games.

      Good luck...

lol, I have done the same thing. I have a PS3 and the only time I play it is when I have friends over. Other than that it just sits there as decoration.

Second, money should be more then enough to motivate you.
Well, not everyone is motivated by money. If the OP was motivated by money then he would have already started moving forward when his income started shrinking, but he didn't. So money is not a motivation factor here.

      @Legit SEO

Have you thought of maybe looking at your IM business as a game? Since you like playing games, maybe try and look at it like that. So instead of playing a game that is costing you money, you get to play a game that increases your wealth.

The other thing and it will probably work better is take a couple of hours or a day and think back to when you were motivated.

What was it that caused you to move forward? To keep going even when you didn't want to? Why did you do the things you did to get up to $3K per month?

Focus on that "Why" on those "reasons" and that should help.

About the Google thing, have you considered learning about paid traffic strategies like Banner Ads and PPC?

They are not as frightening as most people make them out to be, lol.

Did it happen to be COD or Halo?

I used to be ADDICTED to COD. I forced myself to sell it and that was one of the best decisions I made. It all comes down to your priorities.

No distractions. No wasted time. Just productivity.

It might be hard to get rid of ... but what is more important? Being slapped for cash or playing video games?

Make a few affiliate sales asap, and if you are in need of money, trust me..you will be motivated..as soon as you start earning more and more you will be more and more motivated..
My motivation is when I see my family happy especially knowing that I have made them happy by being able to be at home with them..

Well, if you don't feel you can sell or get rid of the xbox or ps3 right now, then give it to a trusted family member and tell them to keep it away from you for the time being. Yes, you can find games on the computer to eat up your time. And, however difficult it might be to get rid of gaming in your life . . . spend some time considering the alternative - really considering the alternative . . . and decide which of those scenarios gives you the most motivation.

You have to find something that takes your attention at the same level like a video game. If you don't like doing SEO , building sites etc move on something different. I wasted many years of my life playing mmorpg's online and other crap , now I still play sometimes occasionally but tbh I'm having more fun doing SEO and making $$$ at the same time. If you can't limit yourself then get rid of your gaming sistems and start focusing on your REAL life. Cheers

Don't give up just something you have to take a break and reset, use this as a learning lesson of what time mis management does. Its not about video games or your love for them, its about priorities and "video games" can be replaced with another love that makes you lose your focus.

Learn what is important and manage your time better, put things in order of importance and go from there, take it day by day.

Unless your back is up against the wall, money is often not enough to motivate someone in to taking massive action.

I know your feeling well, i have had a 5-figure a month income taken from me overnight by a Google update. It sucks.

You need to look for reasons as to why you want to build an online income. When you find enough of those reasons, emphasize them everyday until it is ingrained in your head.

Most people do not fail because they do not know what to do, it is because they give up or don't go through the motions and do the work needed. You need to get a strong enough why, otherwise you will always fail.

    My "whys" are:

    - I want to earn a passive income so that i can take time off and still live a good lifestyle.
    - I want to create something beautiful.
    - I want to create something useful that helps other people.
    - I want to get respect/recognition as the best or one of the best.
    - I want to compete (Outcompete my competition).
    - I just generally want to live the best life i am capable of living

A lot of these things are intrinsic and non niche or non topic motivated. I currently make high 4 figures running bingo websites (I am a 24 year old male) who has no interest in this topic. It's not sheer willpower that has allowed me to do this. Its a combination of recognizing how it will benefit my life if i go through the motions and do the work and the additional motivation that i got after i started getting results.

When you start to figure out exactly what you want to do, look at all the things you do on a daily basis and look at which ones contribute towards reaching your goal and which ones takes away from reaching that goal.

Slowly and surely change your habits so they all support you getting closer to your goal.

    Hope this helped!

Dont put all your eggs in one basket else you could end up like this over and over again.

There are more places to get traffic than Google, infact I do SEO and always advise to look at other solutions rather than Google rank.

Find the best trafficked sites in your market and find a solution to get featured on them.

Also think of the platforms you can publish content to that have massive amounts of traffic that can be leveraged.

Do all this right and Google will take notice without you doing much with your own site!

Google is NOT the internet, who cares what they might or might not do. You can drive traffic from dozens of other sources that they have no control over and never worry about their updates.

90% of my traffic comes from NON search engine / Google sources. Banner ads, forums, blogs, PPC, email list, video marketing, social media, offline ads etc. If you can build sites and know how to monetize them you don't need Google.

Exactly. If you're paying attention then you should know that you can't build a business around Google. Plant some well written banner ads into high-traffic forums and you'll never be short of quality traffic - this is the single greatest decision I ever made after I suffered a major setback back when I started and relied on SEO for Google.

Know your numbers, keep the income/expense ratio within acceptable limits, and keep plugging away.

And last but not least... Make the decision to stop playing the game and get to work, make the CHOICE - end of story.

      Best of luck.

But in terms of motivation you have something that many others do not and that is previous success. Knowing you have done it before should be enough to do it again.

First stop beating yourself up! Hopefully you learned a valuable lesson. Find a replacement for the gaming. Exercise, talking with friends about your experience. Just move forward. Maybe a subconscious thought or other hidden agenda is lurking around your brain pan. Take the advise of others in this thread. Move forward and reclaim what it yours!

This should get to start working. Whatever you do, always think about how your going to make money from that idea and don't stop working on it.

I am sure that you need money. Just write a to do list each day of achievable goals that you can get done and don't quit until you are finished.

You have to seriously understand that when you spend your time playing games you are merely wasting your time instead of doing something useful.

There are so many interesting things you could do with your precious time. Playing games is a silly occupation.

You’ll find the motivation you need when you'll understand that you must be serious and set goals, and then achieve these goals. You are not a child. Playing is for irresponsible children, who have no obligations.

This post is so silly it almost hurts.

Playing video games is not silly... or at least it's not any sillier than playing golf, taking photographs, collect stamps or any other hobby out there. It's entertainment, and thus it serves no other purpose than fulfilling your leisure hours.

Now, letting your hobby (video games, playing golf, collecting stamps, whatever it might be) taking over and ruining other aspects of your life *is* silly.

I agree playing games is not silly but only if it's in moderation. Losing $3000 a month to play a game is just plain stupid. Hopefully the OP can get over his addiction, and get to making the money he used to

This is why I feel that it's important to take breaks from IM throughout the day/week.

If you are at your computer working for weeks on end without giving yourself a little break every once in a while, you are likely to splurge and take way too much time off, like you did this time.

So schedule breaks for yourself throughout the week and hold yourself to it, and get back to work when the breaks are over.

This way you can have that balance that your mind needs to stay sane.

          Hope this helps,

Hi Alex! Boy, do I ever understand where you're coming from. When a somewhat similar

situation hit me what I did was I stepped away for a few days and just gave myself time to think.

I don't know if you are a religious man or not but I did a lot of prayer and associated with

others in and doing well in this business. I basically started back at the bare minimum and

re educated myself and tried to incorporate some things that I picked up. It took me taking baby steps but eventually I managed to get back on track.

Get close with things that do motivate you. Watch youtube videos read success quotes and

if you keep surrounding yourself with the positive watch how the negative will work its way out.

    All the best

I agree, ditch the gaming system...those things can become like having a crack pipe in your house. Just get rid of it. Then, start the day out right. Motivation is easy to keep going, but hard to get started...so start the day out right. Put on some headphones and go for a jog or a walk while listening to your favorite motivational speaker. That alone will get your mind started back on the right track.

    1) Turn OFF the game.
    2) Find a group to work with where you get tip, advice, inspiration, motivation, and where you have fun!
    3) Do what you enjoy doing! Write about computer games, share, and make money that way

Really though, there are so many more ways to get traffic than Google!!! Work with the right people and you won't have to work that hard to stay on top of it.

    Hi Legit SEO!

First of all, you already had a sweet taste of success. Reminisce and think of the things what made you successful back then. Know what inspired you in the past and what drove you to be successful. Look back at your past and respect it.

As of now, you have been an addict in computer games. My advice regarding to that is to weigh your options and know what is more important. It's just like the saying "health is only valued until sickness comes". Don't wait to be with no money before you make a move. Make a move and keep yourself inspired.

I don't know who wrote this, but reading it often helped me in the past. I think it can be motivational:

      I am addiction.
I start in small subtle ways promising many things.
I promise you enjoyment and pleasure beyond your wildest dreams.
I deliver guilt and despair more horrible than your worst nightmare.
I promise you power and courage.
I give you feelings of powerlessness and hopelessness.
I will force you to live in fear always.
I promise you relief and escape from all your daily problems.
I create for you greater problems than you ever have imagined.
I promise comfort, I will give you pain.
I promise happiness, I create much sorrow.

      I AM ADDICTION!

I will steal from you; your self-dignity, your families, your friends,
your children, your home, your dreams, your spirit, your life.
For love, freedom and happiness are impossible to find in my presence.
So never underestimate me, I am devious and manipulating.
      I have no preference as to who I pick as my victim;
rich or poor, young or old, black or white, yellow or red.
I have killed men, women and children.
      I have no conscience.
So, if you have met me, Always Beware,
for if you think you can beat me and I will be gone from your life
and all will go well again, Never forget that I will always be there...
waiting in the dark shadows, just around the corner.
      I am very patient.
And I will laugh in your face if I can lure you into my evil world
of hell on earth once again.

      I AM ADDICTION !!!

      Hey Legit:

That's a big blow to the ego. I imagine it's hard to get back on the horse when you've get knocked off but you must gather up the motivation and focus that you had when you first began your online business. It's there, you just don't have it right now.

Rather than spreading yourself thin, and overwhelming yourself, with creating many sites, why not just put all of your energy and efforts into building one awesome authority site?

I'm sure you have expertise in an area where people will be interested in what you are offering. Build it first, then monetize it later. Gain trust and build a relationship with your readers.

Infuse YOU into everything you do. Tell people about yourself, get personal and they'll love you for it.

It's best to start from scratch with your list (AWeber) and build it with fresh, new subscribers who want what you have to offer.

Don't be discouraged, just refocus. Sit down and write what you would like to do regarding your niche. Choose something you're passionate about and it will show in your work.

All the best. Keep those thoughts positive, it's far from over.

Don't throw away your PS3! There's more to life than making money and I've had an awesome load of fun with Call of Duty!!!

There's more to life than SEO and the Warrior Forum as well. I went niche site crazy for two years, when really I should probably have just focused on my career as a C#/SQL guy. Anyone with a SKILL is usually far better off working at this than messing around with SEO.

As a guy with 2 successful internet ventures (software, then niche sites) I'll also say that its essential to take time out - new business ideas do take a while to come to you, but when you need them most, you'll think of them.

How bad do you want to succeed, OP? Is playing video games more important than your future and your dreams in life?

  • I don´t know anything about video games, but can´t you make screencast videos of your games? Game videos seem to be quite popular on YouTube. Doing nothing else than IM also has it´s disadvantages. If you do nothing else you don´t know anything else and cannot make any websites or videos about something where you are an expert in.

@ OP - I used to be heavily into gaming ... in fact I was rank 1 in 2's and 3's in WoW while I was playing. The best thing I ever did was uninstall the game and quite forever. Succeeding in a video game is a false sense of accomplishment ... being the number one player out of thousands and thousands still to this day doesn't mean jack to me because it was in a virtual world that doesn't exist. I received no real life benefits out of it. Do yourself a favor and give up gaming. Fall in love with being productive with your life. Set real life goals and accomplish them. The rewards are much more fulfilling then any video game can ever offer you. Above all of that, don't ever give up because that's what losers do! Life is about how much you can take and keep going ...... keep your chin up!

    1) Set goals.
    2) Do more things you are proud of doing.
(Anything legal to relax someis okay - in moderation.)
    3) Don't be set back by Google alone. Move from SEO
guy to traffic guy. So much broader of a field to play in.
    4) Set a path for you to do more and more of the business things
you enjoy and less of the things you do not enjoy. Outsource and delegate.

OK, I want you to win. Hard work is the key to success. Let us outline a few steps for you.

Get a twitter account, if you do not already have one. Post what you are working on. Make sure to do items on you to do list in order and do not skip any. Keep fighting on. Create a blog on WF, it is free and tell us what you are doing each day so we can help you more.

Often, I will hit a jam. Friends will tell me how to get out. Prioritize each task in order of its importance so all the major ones get done in a timely manner.

TASK 1 - generate more revenue.
This is done by creating more product web pages. If you are not already an amazon affiliate - become one. Like this is a major source of revenue. Then driving traffic to them via {social, youtube, craigslist, blogs, ads, etc}.

    TASK 2 - eliminate distractions.
Sell your old junk on ebay - another post already suggested this one.

TASK 3 - find your purpose
Hard to motivate yourself if there is no purpose. People get up early in the morning. They work real hard, but often feel empty at their very core. Why do you get up. What is your reason.

This is a great post - I can relate to it so much. I used to be just like you Alex. I used to play Xbox until 3 a.m. every single night, and when I started paying more attention to my business, my Xbox time reduced...and I was seeing a clear correlation between the two. As mentioned above, the money alone should be enough of a driving factor for you - but it won't happen until you're ready. Finish the games, bring closure to these and then don't start another game. Focus on business!! Good luck.

    Hey Alex,

I was once big into SEO for websites as well and then once the Panda updates rolled out and I noticed my sites drop I knew I had to do something different.

What I found was that with YouTube marketing you can continue making money off those profitable keywords you once targeted via website SEO.

When you optimize a YouTube channel like you would optimize a sniper site (or any kind of website that targets a keyword phrase) you can get that ranked similarly and start bringing in traffic to you video.

You will want to backlink that video like you would a website, but you don't have to worry about unnatural link building penalties like you would a site.

Include your link below the video and mention your link in the video so that the viewer knows where to go to get that product or opt-in (so you get paid).

This is what saved my affiliate business. It takes a little time to get familiar with but if you already had an SEO background it shouldn't be a problem for you. And once you get it down, it is very rewarding!

    I hope this helps,

    Paul

Thanks for sharing this, I know that most IM's go through peaks and troughs and at the moment you're in a trough. However you will get out of this, but you need a plan. Focus on what you do day to day, i.e. Blogging for links, creating article content etc. Then set yourself a daily goal. Over time you'll still hit your objectives but it won't feel like such a mountain to climb. All the best, I'm sure you'll be great - let's get you back to that £3k a month!

Quit playing your game all together - then think what are your goals in life?

Buy a new car? take vacations whenever you want? Never work a 9-5 job again?... After you realize what making money online can do for you - that should more then enough motivation

Also for traffic - DO NOT rely on Google. As you can plainly see your always one update away from your business crashing down.

Find FREE methods. This way when the big might Google releases another update - you can still go on without taking such a severe cut in your pay.

First of all, sell the games or at least get them out of the area you use for work. Distractions never lead to success, just wasted time (I love wasting time, but there's a time and place).

Second, concentrate on using traffic methods to build traffic rather than just SEO. Many use article syndication, guest blogging, forum marketing, solo ads and many other strategies to get traffic. Don't put all your eggs in the Google basket.

Third, the fire comes from a desire to live a life uncommon. In other words, I love my freedom more than money, but the money buys my way out of working for someone else. That's all the motivation I need.

I had a game system long ago. I think it was an Xbox or something. Can't remember now lol.

Obviously you haven't lost ALL motivation if you're still here. There's still some fire lowly kindling within you to ask your question. If you had absolutely zero motivation you would have skipped IM altogether and moved onto something else. I have seen that happen countless times with others, so that's not where you're at.

Depending on your age I might recommend meditation. That's really what kind of saved me during the really hard times when I had $1xxx invested in various projects and it seemed like few things if anything was really working. If things aren't really working for you, then contemplate constructing a system of split testing on a small scale where you can tweak things.

If you really can't find the motivation to get going, attach yourself to other people's systems. A really good one for SEO is affilorama. You'll get really good feedback from the people there, IF you're willing to keep going.

I agree, the amount of times I have been playing something on the Xbox thinking at the same about how much time I'm wasting is crazy.

I found it really comes down to seriously treating this not like a cash making hobby but as a real day job type of business, after all you can't play games in a 9-5, self discipline and remembering ultimately why you are creating these sites should help.

As for google updates are inevitable, google as a company are always going to push updates (improvements as they will call them) that will make life a little harder for us as marketers, but who said it was supposed to be easy, this is not an easy business it takes hard work and dedication but the rewards make it so worth it, so screw google find another method or tweak your current one to make it relevant again, not everyone has the knack for this business, if your one of the lucky few who do then nurture it and it will take care of you for years to come.
