Zig Ziglar died today.. What he taught me on a flight that you should know

During the 1980s I was on a flight and by coincidence found myself sitting next to Zig Ziglar, acclaimed sales teacher and motivational speaker.

As I was then employed in a similar line of work as a marketing director, sales trainer, and motivator for an national firm with more than 6000 sales people, I was naturally intrigued to be seated near one of the industries greats.

By this point in my life I had made a mark as an advocate and corporate teacher/trainer of no pressure selling...hiring reps who were convinced they could not sell and making them a success by utilizing their innate goodness, kindness, interest and empathy

Anyone who wanted to "hard sell" a prospect would get the proverbial door from me..and I had the authority to do that

So back to Zig.... in the course of the flight I asked him for his greatest single secret to sales success

He replied:

"Treat every prospect as FRIEND... be sincere, show real interest in their needs..if you really care..(no faking just to get the sale) and want to help people achieve their goals and solve their problems you will have more business that any traditionally trained and so called professional salesman will ever dream of"

This was in essence what I had been doing myself and teaching for several years. The validation of a great such as Zig made me more determined than ever to help as many sales people, consultants, coaches, reps and marketers achieve THEIR dreams by living the golden rule of Zig

Be a friend....solve a problem..make a customer for life doing good and living the golden rule !

We just lost Zig Ziglar to an illness at the age of 86... On behalf of all whose lives you enriched, I salute you Zig, will carry your lessons on and in my heart which are evergreen and a memorial that will long endure.

Rest well Zig..you deserve it and we shall miss you

Zig was a friend of my dear friend Keith Jobber who died very young. The influence and ideas from Zig (and Keith) eventually set me up in business in 1989. I have never looked back.
I'm sorry to hear of his death but know he lived life well and to the full.

Here's what I learned from Zig...

I remember reading in one of his books about a time early in his sales career. He was selling some pans and his friend agreed to allow Zig to give his presentation.

Now, Zig knew that this friend and his wife were struggling financially, so he went in assuming he would lose the sale. Of course, this caused him to give up too easily once they started bringing up objections and he didn't close the sale.

However, Zig's friend became mad at him. I think it was a few days later that the friend confronted Zig and told him that his wife really wanted to buy those pans because she knew they would be more reliable and more sturdy than anything else, but Zig failed to overcome their objections and couldn't help them overcome their hesitation, so they didn't buy.

So often we assume that "nobody wants to be sold" as the saying goes. But the truth is people do want to be sold, you just have to overcome those fears and objections that are holding them back. This can only be done by truly believing in your product as the solution to your prospect's problems.

    RIP Zig.

Actually, people don't want to be sold (i.e. talked into buying something they don't really need or want). What they DO want is to be shown how your product or service can fulfill their needs or desires - if you can do that, you're golden. Subtle but powerful difference in approach.

Sad to hear of Zig's passing - he was definitely a very positive influence in the world and will continue to be even though he is no longer with us.

        EXCELLENT COMMENTS

I agree entirely that people don't want to be sold per se..they want to know how to fix their problem, solve a challenge, eliminate pain...when you show them that path they will buy the solution having discovered it themselves... in essence they sell themselves..you simply open the door for them and show them, the light of day..

I was just quoting his famous "help other people get what they want and you'll get whatever you want" saying to someone yesterday.

One of my cherished memories was hearing him speak live a few years back. I don't remember much of what others said but Zig made a big impression on me that day.

    Truly a legend.

      Thanks for the reminder.

Also I've read that book was rejected something like 30 times before being published. Too many these days give up trying in 2 weeks or at least way too soon before they jump ship onto something "better" or "newer" (see hundreds of forum posts for proof).

Great post! I've heard so much about Zig Ziglar so it's refreshing to get a real world example!

    RIP Zig

Aww man. That guy has definitely helped me shake the self-defeating rut on more than one occasion.

As everyone has already mentioned, Zig was a giant....in a small group of motivational giants. Men like Jim Rohn, Tony Robbins and Brian Tracy.

I remember the first time I saw him use that gold pump handle to tell a story about how most people quit, just before the results start flowing. He was such a vivid wordsmith, I could almost see water pouring out of that simple prop.

I don't remember a time since I entered sales, that Zig Ziglar was not the acknowledged king of motivation. He always said his goal was to be of service, and he was certainly that and so much more.

Zig was great. God bless him and his family.

I always remember this great quote from his book, Over The Top:

If it's to be, it's up to me.

A great point to remember to guarantee your business success.

Zig Ziglar is an inspiration to me. Ive listened to his audio book BETTER THAN GOOD twice. He is a fine upstanding person who truly exemplified a solid character based on Christian values. He never compromised on that and boldly proclaims his Faith. He will be sorely missed.
