what to do about ebook theft?

everyones worst nightmare - you go into google and find a website where the members are uploading and downloading all your hard work.
you post in their forum asking them politely to stop and they just laugh at you.
what should a publisher do - is there anyone who deals with this sort of thing professionally? any suggestions?

    Yes Rob,

Sorry to hear about that. I bought a simple little ebook:
Ebook security secrets by Melanie Mendelson
Although I haven't used her tips and techniques she really
seems to know what she's talking about. And I like her
    other low cost ebooks too.

    Good luck

Wouldn't bother too much about ebook theft. Piracy is the best compliment. If even windows is having issues with theft, what more can we do.

Alot of the big marketers don't really protect their download links much. The idea is to sell more products. After all, a majority of people that download the pirated copies wouldn't really end up as customers anyway.

Just perform due diligence in what you can to safeguard your download pages. Use (dlguard...noindex the pages etc.)

      Hey Rob,

Sorry to hear about your situation but it is an everyday case in the internet marketing world. And it is a knowing fact that you cannot do much against it. I know this from my experience so I don't annoying myself about that. It belongs to the business.

What Alvin says is ok, you need to guard your work as you can. If I were you I would make new project while you are angry on that.

      Many successes,

      Sandor

That's a really good point, Alvin. I never thought of it that way, but it's true. Thanks for putting that in perspective.

    guys
thanks for the comments, my download page is noindexed, deep in the site, cloaked etc and i change the url regularly, its customers who have bought products - who then go off and join a forum on this website related to the niche and they have uploaded almost every product in the niche.
I do recognise it as par for the course with ebooks and obviously torrents etc cannot be stopped, but this is a website which is climbing the google rankings with several thousand links and is unashamedly flouting every copyright rule in the book - its growing!!
It even comes up when i google my own website which has to be a concern?
What i am getting at is - would there be any mileage in advising google or clickbank or the websites domain host?
thanks again for any help guys

I wouldn't waste my time. Focus on promoting your product instead. It will most likely make you more money anyway.

Yes, ironically, the more pirated your stuff is, it seems the more likely that you are to get more sales I suppose that because 'indirectly' other people are promoting your products... (i.e., through links/http links, etc)... Also... then if you come up with a new product, someone that might have gotten a pirated version might be more likely to make a purchase, having felt 'guilty' about getting a pirated version...

so in some respects, piracy can be a good thing!

Do not worry about it. Everything out there that is software based has a free version to it due to torrents files etc. Your job is to push your product so hard and so fast that they don't think about getting it for free. Heck most people that are you buying audience do not even know about it. Just work on selling your product and do not stress it

Protect your ebook with password and let only the buyers have the password..

It's not a total solution though as one of your buyers could be the thief..

So, the best way..leave it and move to your next project rather than wasting time worrying it.

Depends on the cost of your product. If it is anything above $37 or so, you could use a software called Multimedia-Protector, it will assign software keys (unique) to your ebook or software. The customer has to register over the internet and then he cannot copy or send the file, even if he does it cannot be opened. You could try it, but it is priced upwards of $375. But it WORKS. I myself use it an am happy with it.
Note: I am not an affiliate or anything, I am only a customer, but I have hunted for over a year on the Internet for such a product and I am glad to say that it fits the bill. It protects all kind of multimedia files including pdf e-books too.You will find lots of file protection software for exe files but very few for multimedia or pdf files, this is one of the best.

use a script like bfm or rap as they expire the download link after few days and also you will have people doing this all the time. I have seen $2000 products on sites been given away for free.

Keep promoting your product as the main market will buy it and change your download link to something most people wont guess like 4hddk/index.html

    many thanks guys
thats really good advice i'll study all the options and hopefully get used to the idea that it might not be the end of the world.
i find it hard not to get angry when i've spent so many months putting a product together.
someone really does need to come up with a better option than pdfs
thanks again guys great stuff - what an ace forum!!

The way I look at is that most of the people who are going to download it for free would of never taken out their wallets to buy it in the first place. So you are not losing out on a sale.

I think that you can turn it into a positive by including links to your other products or aff products in the ebook. That way if they like it and want to try some stuff out, they will go to the ebook/software through your link.

You can even look at it as someone you would of never made a sale to anyway since they are a cheap schmuck, now that they have your product you might stand a chance to make a backend sale.

Other than that, don't lose any sleep over it.
