Hiring a writer to do content writing. W-9?

So I want to hire my first writer on to do some content writing for me.

I'm not exactly sure how to set this up. Would I need them to fill out a W-9? I'm currently set up as a sole proprietor.

Thanks for any help!

Technically, I believe if someone earns over $600, that's when they start getting taxed, but I've never seen a client ask me to sign a W-9 form and a year ago I had one who had more than $600 work available.

I'm not going to say a definite "no" but I will say that I've never had a client ask me to sign one. If you're paying via PayPal, more than likely you're fine. Now, if you're going to give them checks or direct deposit payment options, I would think you need them to sign that form.

Its best to talk to a tax specialist. My brothers wife is a supreme specialist at this area so its definitely a perk when I have questions.

Thanks for the replies. Yeah this is someone I know locally that is doing some work for me. I don't think he knows much about taxes on his end so that could be an issue.

Paypal makes sense for payment. Okay I'm going to look into this. Thanks.

1099-Misc is the tax form for subcontractors. Pretty sure that's it.
