How long did it take for your website to bring in some profits? One of the things newbies assume is instant results from website. I dont think it is so from my experience. My blog took about 18 months to get reasonable numbers to show. And for you - how long was it?
#long

3-4 months for me ... but that depends on how you want to define 'reasonable'

My first initial sales came mostly from directing questions to answers which were located on my blog. It took a ton of built relationships and hours and hours of time to set up that foundation.

By reasonable I mean few hundreds of dollars in the initial stages.

        Yea definitely 3-4 months.

After that initial hump it gets much easier as the 'snow ball' effect really helps build momentum.

There just to many factors involved
1/ are u giving unique quality content
2- what is your ratio on keywords
3/ are you using social networks to advertise
4/ are you submitting yiur articles to ezine
5/ are you pinging your posts
6/ how often do you post

I think 3 months and if your doing everything correct and building a list and not spamming them and budding a relationship with them you should start to see profits , but a $ 100 dollars profit may mean more to a student in a poor country than an person with a family and bills

I threw up a website in about an hour night before last. Put up one very crappy sales page for a $97 offer. By 12 PM yesterday I had made 6 sales. Today I am getting ready to send an invoice for sale number 11.

Too many people want to put up a website based on keyword research and hope Google sends them some targeted traffic. I, on the other hand, saw a need at a place where there was already a boatload of people .. threw up an add offering a fix for the need.

Don't fight it .. give the people what they demand.

It was a month or two before we made a buck and in maybe 6 months we were getting decent sales. Our product is pretty specific, not something everybody wants or needs, so it took time to get our name out there and get a decent return. Plus it's seasonal and we are entering our slow time...so that really affects sales.

Troy Phillips, you said you put up a crappy sales page. Did you deliberately make it crappy because you did it so fast or ??? Why didnt you take the time to make it look good? Not criticizing you at all, just wondering.

Well think of it this way. A lot of new marketers get so perfection focused they never get passed the sales page.

I took maybe 30 minutes throwing mine up after the initial install.I had my first sale in less than a hour of starting the sales page. If I was still trying to get the sales page perfect I would not yet made any money.

Apparently the sales copy was pretty decent or at least it hit home with it's target. I can always go back and tweak the page itself. The content is what matters. With the right words you can sell a dog turd off a Pringle lol.

My first website had like 10 different work at home opportunities on it when I got started online back in 2002. Tried everything for the first 5 years but failed in terms of marketing it.

Then met a guy who invited me and others in our team to join his training and give it a shot. After a few weeks of his training on how to market online and how to add the right programs, I was earning a full time income.

What I learned is that you can never rely on the search engines for traffic or sales. To think like that may cause you to fail over and over again with no real chance of success.

Just because you have a website thrown up does not mean that you are going to make sales and get lots of traffic because you still need it to rank high. If you are already an expert and know what to do, then it can be very easy to get it ranked as fast as you can.

Just wondering about the training program attended by you and your time. Can you throw in some bits about what you learnt that you were missing till then.

Probably six months and there is no guarantee that your efforts will get rewarded, but that's just the name of the game

A few months, but instead of asking how long, ask what you need to start doing right now and start doing it. Analysis and asking how long till you see results will just make you fearful and distracted. Just get focused and take action, the results will happen a lot faster.

I look at this way. When you know results are not instantaneous, which many people assume and get upset after a few days/ months and get distracted, if they know it takes sometime for things to settle in,it will keep them going.

Depends on who is reading it and how he/she takes it, ultimately. But I hope it helps majority to know it takes effort and time for results to come(of course, there are exceptions always)

But that leaves the question as to why someone would go the SEO route out of the box.

SEO is a great thing. Do your on page and all the off page you can muster but do not set a site up to get initial traffic from the search engines. When the search traffic does come it is merely an added bonus.

Have a traffic plan before you even build the site. Find your target before you build the site. Now build your site around pleasing that target. Start where the traffic already is. Offer that traffic something they already want. Now capture that traffic, give them what they want and build your own market around the captive audience.

Did I mention a thing about SEO in my post. I dont understand whats the source of this interpretation. Anyway, SEO is never a method to be ignored, neither it is not the only method.

Did I say you did. I said that leaves to question.

I really thought I was joining the conversation on a public forum. People looking for traffic from the search engines is one of the usual suspects of a site taking a long time to pay off.

The Op is titled how long. Seems like many want to take the fact it has taken them forever to make any money online and act like it is the norm. Then again, some talk about how hard it is to make it online and some of us just go ahead and make it.

Fine. I now understand where you get it from.

Lets not get into technicalities of getting traffic to a website on this thread. I wish we have a more generic discussion with experiences shared by the people having run websites.

Yes, its all about traffic. It will take awhile to become profitable if you need to wait on "traditional" SEO. I do Launch Jacking and generate the traffic from the "buzz" that's already being generated by other people... so the traffic is built in, as long as you can get your properties to the front page.

In this case, your "web properties" (not necessarily "website") should become profitable almost instantly... or certainly within days...

Two months is too short a time for blogs especially to get into profits.Keep blogging and keep connecting. It will pay off. Many of the popular blogs today were in a similar condition,if not worse, as yours in their early days.

The timeframe to success is really dependent on how you plan to market your website or blog. If you are going the SEO route, it may take some time to see results. Articles, press releases, content creation. It takes time for search engines to find that information.

But if you are paying for your traffic, you can get results immediately. You can set up your website and then use PPC to send traffic to it right away.
