Hi
Can anyone help me on the best way to start out in Internet Marketing,
I have read loads of stuff on Niches, SEO, List building, ect.
Have watched so many IM Gurus on so many seminar dvds that my head is about to explode.
I have Subscribed to a couple of these Guru's who make everything sound so simple. But the truth of the matter is, its not.
Its great that i am learning so much about IM, But i would like to try and earn some money at the same time.
Is affilliate marketing the best way to get started?

Affiliate marketing is best for lots of people starting out because you can start right away with no product of your own.

If you've got lots of DVDs and other training meterials on Internet marketing then the best thing would be to pick the one that teaches what's best for you and to stay completely focused on that one until it starts working.

Don't try too many different things all at once, or give up on an approach if it doesn't work right away.

Good Luck with whatever you decide.
Please don't do this. A lot of what people learn about IM is junk knowledge. Unless you know you know what you're doing, don't go around teaching others what to do.

        Hey Gina,

I was considering that as an option too. What to do if one has the knowledge and can help others offline, but lack a successful track record?

In my case, I have tons of knowledge and can see how to help others improve their businesses, but yet I'm still trying to make my first $100. My knowledge comes many different sources, esp. WF and I've tried different approaches. Right now, I'm helping a friend look at her site from the clients' point of view. She was awestruck and excited by the questions and ideas I gave her. She wants to send people my way, but I'm worried and not sure how to get over the track record issue.

Thanks in advance to anyone's replies!!!

Good luck to all the newbies out there. Keep pressing forward and don't give up. IM really does work. I can see a faint light at the end of the tunnel. I know I'm getting closer to finding the right match! You will too!!

Hunty, the reason that most people say it is easy
to start with affiliate marketing is because it is the
    cheapest way to start!

But, if you are serious then there are a few things to
    consider...

    1. Your Own Website
    2. Autoresponder
    3. Targeted Traffic
    4. A Affiliate/Clickbank Product

Once you get it all set up just start driving targeted
    traffic to your website!

There are many ways to drive targeted traffic to your
    website...

    - Article Marketing
    - SEO
    - Video Marketing
    - PPC
    - Contextual Advertising
    - Viral Marketing (write an e-book)
    - Banner Ads
    - Ezine Ads

    And many more...

    - You need to find a market that interests you and
    a market that has needs!

    - Then get your own website.

    - Get an autoresponder in fill it with follow-up letters
that promote your product or program.

    - Then pick a marketing method within your budget
    and start promoting your website.

Once you master one form of marketing add another
form or advertising and you'll start to build momentum!

    I hope this helps!

    Good luck,

    Hey there Hunty,

hope your alrite. Now, without overloading you with information, remember that IM is always a learning curve, and you can never stop learning.

The Easiest method is to go into affiliate marketing. This is where you try to sell other peoples products and get paid money for it! its great because you don;t have to deal with your own customers or anything! you are responsible for driving the sales and that is all you do!

Now you need to pick a Marketing strategy that will allow you to get maximum exposure. You need to determine to yourself if you have money to invest, or, you want to make money and reinvest it to make more money!

the best way to get started is to join up to an affiliate network, which is the middleman between you and the person who made the product. Then you can work out different marketing techniques. There are so many, that naming them all would probably just confuse you!

If you need any help, then feel free to PM me.

    Take Care,

    J

Want to know the secret? Get started, now! You don't have time to absorb all the info... What has resonated with you? What 'guru' does a good job of explaining his business model to you? Follow that and stick to that model.

DO NOT CHANGE YOUR MIND IF IT DOESN'T WORK THE FIRST 2 WEEKS...

If it's a good niche, health, wealth, or relationships... 3 main niches that branch out to others, then you are in good standing and should be able to create a clear goal of what you want out of the business.

Get a website, get it set up right: leadcapture => salespage/affoffer => back-ends/memberships => More offers => seminars etc

That's the million dollars formula, and it works.

Then get your butt out there and start driving traffic until you turn blue 4-8 hours a day the first 60 days... just DO, smack the spaghetti on the wall at first, track what works and do that.

THIS IS A HORRIBLE IDEA TO TELL A NEWBIE!! Do NOT get started until you have studied enough. There's a reason people (usually) go to college for 4 years before entering the business world. If you dive in head first in this game, you won't crush your scull, but you'll more than likely break your wallet very fast.

The one thing I can think of immediately that all aspects have in common is keyword research. LEARN as much as you can about keyword research. Then, when you pick a total system that you want to use in your marketing business, start slow and rollout big when you find something that works.

You can't just drive tons of traffic to a page assuming it will convert. That's completely ludicrous!

      Best of Luck!

You're not suggesting that it takes 4 years of study to do IM I hope.

It's not a horrible suggestion really because for a newbie to IM the cost of failure is extremely low. Set up a website for a few quid, or use free hosting, and then spend some time on driving traffic.

Even taking a course of study in college requires the student to do some practical work.

Just diving in and getting started can teach you a lot, and if you fail, so what. As long as you're not doing anything criminal, you've learned something new.

How long have you been marketing on the Internet? Since when is it okay to simply grab traffic from any old traffic source and drive them to some page you pick by eeny-meeny-miny-moe? Even if you get super-targeted traffic from a super-reputable source, what do you do then? Direct linking or landing page? If a landing page, what kind? Review page or pre-sell? How much do you spend for said traffic? Do you want the number 1 listing in AdWords (NO! BTW)? Do you get traffic from the search network or the content network? Which will convert better for which types of offers? Do you KNOW of any offers besides the usual "Clickbank suspects?" Do you know what you're talking about at all?

Not to be rude, but it sounds like you're just quoting trash from a rehashed PLR book bundled with a nonsense Clickbank product. You don't sound like someone talking from experience.

Sorry hunty, for using your thread to argue. I'll try to just ignore any other quips.

I don't think Butterfly Marketing will be your answer for what you want to do. I'd recommend Michelle MacPhearson's Crowd Mountain. She lays out a great plan of action for putting up a blog, driving traffic with SEO, and monotizing it with affiliate links.

Like anything, it's a lot of work. But it seems like the direction you want to go in.

I agree with Alex, pick one course and stick to that plan. Although, it is a great that you have some varied IM knowledge.

Good luck with whatever route you choose!

You can't use PPC anymore with Amazon anyway.

4% may not sound like a lot, but if you sell a $1000 product, that will net you $40, as much as some Clickbank products.

There are no free lunchs. Internet marketing requires effort. If people tell you it's easy, that's because the actual tasks are not hard. It requires repetition and consistency. Most people give up because they don't get instant results. Even selling affiliate products is not instantaneous.

Find a market and stick too it

    Get organized

    Try not to get distracted

Chances are you won't see the forest for the trees

All of us get distracted (refocusing is the key to success)

Don't expect results immediately, anything worthwhile takes time

Be honest with yourself. Are you in this for the long haul or just to make quick money. Your approach will be different.

Stick too it and good luck.

      1. Identify why you want to get started in Internet marketing. If your goal is to make $200 a month how you will do it is different than if you want to quit your job and earn a full-time living.

      2. Determine whether you are a worker that wants to trade time for money, or whether you want to start your own business and build a larger income from it.

For example if you are a worker you can make money writing articles, taking paid surveys, and so on.

If you would like to build a larger income consider starting a home business and selling things online in such ways as affiliate marketing, network marketing, blogging, and so on.

There are so many different ways to make money with Internet marketing that it is almost impossible to fail if you choose to do something that you are interested in.

I am a straight shooter, so here's my take.

You are not focused. You seem to jump from one hot thing to the next. That is the problem...you do not give things a chance to work.

Personally, you should focus on one thing and do it to the best of your ability for 6-months to 1-year. If it doesn't work then you can consider moving on to something else.

Get focused. Get a plan. Take action. Revise your plan. Take more action.

It's really that simple once you know what people want to buy.

Or, you can keep reading and asking questions while time passes by. It's up to you!

I understand perfectly how overwhelming this business can be. You can see the potential... you believe that it IS possible to earn a good income online...

But then you sit down in front of your computer, on your own, and you just don't know where to actually START. You feel terrified at the thought of ALL you have to learn. But remember, you don't have to learn it all at once. Try to think of it more as a series of small skills that can be learnt one at a time.

First, decide on a niche you would be interested in & research it well to make sure theres a good market.

The next thing I did was learn to build my own website & this REALLY helped my confidence. I used a FREE book - it was so easy to understand and follow (just as well as I am definately not technically minded!).

All these ideas are great to pursue however, if you really want to lay a solid foundation, build your list first. You need subscribers to promote to and build relationship with.

I can recommend www.chrisfarrell-online.com as he has been the best I have found at teaching newcomers how to learn the basics needed and put all the proper pieces together to lay a good foundation to build on. Its a learning curve that every serious IMer must go through when starting out. Most of his stuff is free too. He has a new membership site out that is excellent as well and very affordable. Hope this helps.

    Hey there,

    I know the feeling...

Have been there before and it's sooooooo easy to get confused with all the different techniques and stuff...

If you are looking for some money as quickly as possible, I would do the following for a few weeks and concentrate just on it (I have done the same thing and it was the first thing that made me some checks...)

5 Step Plan to Making Some Easy Affiliate Sales

    1. Pick a HUNGRY market that is passionate and has a BURNING problem to solve. Competition is good. Just make sure you haven't picked "How to Tie a Tie" market, okay? No one is losing sleep over that problem... (Est. 1-2 hours)

    2. Find the top sellers on ClickBank for that category and choose 3-4 products to promote that have healthy gravity and don't look like a scam (you don't want that refunds, right?). (Est. 30 mins)

    3. Create a "ghetto" landing page/minisite and a website of just few pages using blogger.com or weebly.com (better to use your own domain, but if you want to test things... a blogger or weebly site will do. Squidoo is fine too, but has a bit too many distractions). (Est. 30 mins)

    4. Write a short review about each product (200-300 words with some bullet points) and put it on a separate page on the ghetto website... BUT... make it factual and non-salesy! Just look at the website of the merchant and report on the product and what it is supposed to do. The more you try HARD to persuade people, the more they will resist. Just list some benefits, what it's supposed to do and if you find some real user comments, list them as well as testimonials. Put all reviews on separate page of your ghetto website and include your affiliate links, in the text and somewhere prominent, but no flashy buttons... just simple "under the radar". On the home page put some relevant text about the products and compare them side by side in order of preference and clearly mark the winner! (Est. 4 hours)

    5. Write three articles on the related subject and post them on EzineArticles and point them in your signature to your "ghetto" home page with the products side by side. Write 3 articles a day before you do anything else for a bout a week. Write fast, non salesy, as if you are talking to a friend. (Est. 1.5 hours / day)

    What now?

If the niche is hot and products good, you should see some sales within few days. Keep it consistent for a week and then make your judgements.

Bonus Tip #1: Look in your category on EzineArticles for the "Most Viewed" articles. Study the subject matter and also the headline style... you need to craft compelling headlines and you could usually get few hundred views in the first couple of days per article. See what topics get most views and write about those topic too...

Bonus Tip #2: If you see consistent sales, get a domain name immediately and put the stuff on YOUR own domain (re-write text). This will become your asset over time. Don't promote weebly's or blogger's business to excess. Promote your own.

Ooops... I think I got carried away a little...

I wholeheartedly agree with this idea to use a free site to test the waters, and a review site is a wise first choice. I would recommend staying out of the more competitive niches at first. Did anyone tell you yet that the site with the most anchored backlinks is the winner? Regardless of what Google says, Google does as Google feels like doing but will not admit it. Besides article submissions, I recommend free directory submissions without reciprocal links and leaving anchored links at related blogs in a long, intelligent comments that add value to the discussion. Directory submissions and blog commenting are both free. On any given day you should be getting anchored backlinks for hours and hours until you think you are going to die from boredom. Now that is when you know you are doing enough...

I think you forgot to mention the name of the book. You can go to W3Schools Online Web Tutorials for free information on building websites. HOWEVER, WordPress is free and easy to install. I've used it to build almost all of my sites and I'm a former programmer !

This may work for you, but I disagree with building a list right away. I think by promoting CPA/CPL (cost per action/cost per lead) offers you can start to build your cash flow AND understand the emotional triggers which make ppl buy. If you just start building a list not knowing what you're doing you have a recipe for disaster. With cost per ? buyers you can see what's converting immediately, change it, and test out plan B. Or even better, split test plans A and B, pick a winning one, and split test that one with plan C, constantly trying to convert more ppl by beating your winning ad (or landing page or both).

All these replies are making me want to start a thread.

        Just my own little contribution.

I think you mentioned affiliate marketing. This is a great way to start but speaking from experience I would certainly build a simple squeeze page and send traffic to it.

I know you have lots and lots of info doing somersaults all around you. Please just remember this...if you have no one to sell to aka a customer base or a list then you are in for a steep learning curve. I mean SEO, Blogging, article marketing, adwords, adsense and the list goes on.

Build a list my friend then send your traffic to your affiliate sales page. this way you have the subscriber/customer and can market to them over and over again.

Let me just add here that if you are not building a list then you are building someone else's.

I wish you all the best with all the information you now have at your disposal.

        This forum really is cooooooooooooool!

Let me put it straight to you...for me in 2000/2001 I took massive action in a specific market (dating related)....

    You need TWO THINGS:

    1) a great offer
    2) TRAFFIC TRAFFIC TRAFFIC ( this is where the action and magic happens )

...learn how to pitch your product and customize your offering...after that buy traffic, make traffic, outsource traffic and TEST TEST TEST...

Whatever work is 'working' replicate the p1ss out of it.

This is what many newbies do not understand. It's easier than most make it out to be.

ALL you need is an offer that converts and a buyer.

Your first goal should be to find a product and offer (sales page) that converts and then run lots of traffic to it. And when I say lots, I don't mean 100 people but more like 100,000 just for beginners to test the offer.

My suggestion is to find a method of traffic generation, such as article marketing or PPC, that you like doing more than any other and stick with it until you start to see results. Then ramp it up.

Once you know what you like doing and what works then you have a winning combination that you will enjoy doing with any product, whether your own or an affiliate's.

      Good luck.

        Seriously?
With article marketing that would take like a year
100 articles = 1000 click troughs in a month IF you use proper keyword research and a good ressource box.

Do you have a site online yet? If not, start there - not a free blog, but a domain you own and can start building a business base that will last.

You can start w/just a simple html site but I'd recommend installing wordpress and learning how to make it do what you want.

Start writing - the skill of communicating your message in written form is key to a business on the internet.

Make your first dollar - pick a single product that you know or own. Find an affiliate for that product (amazon, ebay, etc), write a simple review on your site including your affiliate link 2 or 3 times throughout the article. Sign up for a popular forum where people hang out that would be interested in that product. Add a link to that particular PAGE (not just your domain) in your signature and start providing good answers to forum posts. Soon you'll have 20-50-100 posts, each of them with a link back to your review page and I can almost guarantee you'll have your first sale.

This can all be done on an hour or 2 each evening within a weeks time.

If affiliate marketing really fits on your skill so why don't you chose affiliate marketing. If it's not maybe you fit on outsourcing your skills to buyers. It is really nice trying both ways so that you can see it yourself what will really is for you.

      Hello there,

I was traveling for a while and wasn't able to see some of the questions about this "Ghetto" landing page thing.

What it means is a SIMPLE landing page. As in just simple text and no fancy graphics. The idea is to test the offer without spending too much time. If one thinks about the landing page too long, one doesn't get started.

But yes, some people have suggested great things in my opinion, like:

      - Promoting residual programs
      - Building a list
      - Promoting expensive products etc...

Well, some person suggested to study-study-study first before doing much, BUT... here is the problem. We get completely bombarded with information on IM and the thing is... many things do work. Problem comes when we get overwhelmed with information and we don't start ANYTHING.

This happened to me before... I stumbled upon IM and got few courses, unfortunately only confusing stuff, but some were good. Learned few things and was just about to start something and booom.... here comes a new course with a new technique.... bought that, learned that "new" technique... got confused about what I was going to do before and didn't even do it. This went on for months... until... I decided on just ONE process of getting traffic and began promoting an offer that was CONVERTING well.

Yes, eventually it's true.... you basically need to master getting traffic (paid, SEO, articles, whatever) and then convert that traffic. Once you get one thing working, it's wise to systematize it (outsource articles etc) so that it works for YOU and you can expand... You can only write that many articles a day...

As before... if the niche is not hungry, you'll not be able to convert...
if the niche is hungry, but you don't get traffic... same story...

Of course, it's great wisdom to promote residual programs and get paid repeatedly.
With list building... great idea too... just some niches are not so suitable for list-building... like ring-tones etc...

      Good luck
