If we change hosts, will it be easy as changing the name servers on your domain?

Well basically that's it.

I bought a domain name from namecheap (thanks to alexa for emphasizing on this by the way), and I have a webhost already for it.

There's not much going on in the site as of the moment.

I'm thinking of making SBI my host for the domain.

So will it just like how I changed the DNS from namecheap to my current webhost or should I prepare for consequences?

Also, well, SBI costs $30 per month and I'm thinking if I couldn't keep up for the $30 per month for the first three months, well I'd have to move to another cheaper hosting website.

Just click name server set up, and add the names and you're done. Online takes a minute. Here is a video on how to do it...

I thought it's not the same when changing web hosts. No worries at all I guess. Thanks!

If you change webhosts, it is a LOT more complicated. The LEAST problematic is a 100% HTML/JAVASCRIPT site with RELATIVE addresses. With THAT, you would just have to move the files. It they are absolute, you will have to change the addresses. If you use a database or server language, things get more complicated.

      Yikes!

Okay, thank you all for your replies.

Now this is where I get confused again.

The thing is, the current web host that I have right now is 000webhost, and I got their free hosting sevice instead of choosing other hosting services as low as one.

I got a domain name registered from name cheap .com and was planning hostgator to be my webhost. But something came up and I can't do that for the moment. So, thinking that my payment for namecheap is already running, I might as well try some freehost for the time being.

Then the consequences that was told to me by veterans here in the forum started sinking in. That if I do the plan of starting at a free web host and later moving it on a paid hosting service is a freakish nightmare. I didn't understand it by then because I never bought one until that day when I did, I think. Is this what it is seasoned?

So after I hosted my domain with 000webhost's free hosting, I didn't do anything because I'm assuming that the nightmare starts by me uploading pictures and stuffs and articles, only to move them one by one to the new host. I thought... What if I only thought of this when I've uploaded hundreds of them already. So I stopped.

Anyway, I think I'm just venting a little about it now that I kind of understand what's it going to be after realizing what I was about to do. My head is swirling again. @_@

It all depends on what you use, and how it is done. As for transferring files, that can often be queued up so the actual movement isn't that hard. AGAIN, databases are a bit more complicated.

SO, if you need to move a program....

        Is the platform supported?
        Is the language supported?
Do you have the right libraries and plugins?
Is the webserver(often tomcat or apache) setup right?
        Are the names the same?
        Are the directories the same?
If an IP address is used, should it be changed?

(If all is the same and relative, no change may be needed)

        If you use a database....
Do you have the same type?
Can you have the same name?
        Are the parameters the same?
(If all are the same, no change is needed)

You need to move the data.

        If you have files....
are addresses relative?(If they are, no change may be needed!)

So it COULD be easy, or complicated. MOST people use common programs, or HTML, so it often IS easy. Not ALWAYS though!

If you are using WordPress on your current site or are just uploading HTML pages and images, then moving the whole site is very easy and won't take more than a few minutes.

If you have a highly complex website, then it might be a little more complicated to move it, but it really does depend on your current site.

After you've uploaded your files from your old host to the new web hosts server, and have imported any databases, if you have them. Then after switching the dns name servers then you should be all set.

Sometimes you'll have to edit any config files and reset permissions.

Correct. There are no consequences apart from the having to wait for the DNS changes to propagate (can take up to 48 hours), but that's the only real thing to take into consideration.

I have no idea what SBI is, but what are you getting for your $30p/m? Is that a VPS or a Reseller account? If not, $30 is very expensive.

SBI is really a upgraded website builder. It helps you not just with building a website but also navigation and seo and a lot of other things. They've gone way down in price. Its well worth it if you are trying to selll in niches and you want a great site people can navigate well and that will be in the searches and will sell your products. I never bought it just advertised it for awhile. But its very good and $30.00 is a good price.

Oh heck - I was even able to handle this one on my own. If I can do it without breaking a little sweat or cussing a couple of times, anyone can do it.
