Hey guys maybe this is obvious to just about everyone who might read this. But I am a newbie and I learned a tough lesson today. I have a wordpress website and I decided to buy another domain and set it up as a squeeze page anyway to make a long story short.

I installed wordpress in the new domain not realizing I was supposed to set up a sub domain or point to a different location or something like that and I ended up erasing my first website and all it's content that I spent hours and hours and hours on!

Needless to say Fatcow thinks they can fix it for $75 per hour. There is a lesson here.
Back up your website
lest you do something stupid like overwrite all your files which is pseudo- irreversible

A tough lesson but I suppose it could be worse.

btw anyone have a good idea for a way to back up my websites locally. Is there a cheap or free program to do this. I would like to never have this happen again.
Thanks,
John

Back up all your files to a usb drive, an external hard drive, and even an online service like MediaFire or Carbonite.

Hey, you can try Manage WP service. It is free for scheduled backups, but if you want to make a backup right away, then you have to upgrade your account (minimum fee is 6$ per month).

What is also great about this platform that you can access several Wordpress sites at the moment. It is like one dashboard for few sites.

You should design all sites locally and upload them via ftp when they are ready. You will always have a local copy then of the entire site. Use MAMP for Mac or WAMP / XAMPP for Windows to create a local environment where you can install a database and design it just like the remote server. Also, use a Wordpress plugin that backs up your remote site periodically. I set up some of my sites to backup daily/weekly and then email me the SQL database so I have everything safe in case of any problems. There are plenty to choose from on Wordpress.org in the plugins section.

Thanks for all the great replies. I like the idea of working on my site locally than using ftp to upload. I will look into that. I think it is the best option for the future.
        Thanks again,
        John

I back mine up manually once a month, but may change the frequency to fortnightly

no problem. I pretty much wanted to share my experience along the way. If it saves someone a little heart ache than I think it is worth it. I like the sense of community around here and even though this forum is huge I can tell it has a very "quaint" vibe about it. So in my little tiny miniscule way I would like to contribute and as I learn more I will give more

$75!!! Hostgator or Bluehost will restore your website for free so long as you haven't exceeded your space limit for backups on your account.

So does this mean your database was overwritten too? Or just the files?
