Join Google In The Fight Against Internet Control

Google has launched a campaign against attempts to control the internet

https://www.google.com/takeaction/?u...freeandopen_en

"The internet is in danger.

There’s a meeting between the world’s governments in a just a few weeks, and it could very well decide the future of the internet through a binding international treaty. It’s called the World Conference on International Telecommunications (WCIT), and it’s being organized by a government-controlled UN agency called the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).

If some proposals at WCIT are approved, decisions about the internet would be made by a top-down, old-school government-centric agency behind closed doors. Some proposals allow for access to be cut off more easily, threaten privacy, legitimize monitoring and blocking online traffic. Others seek to impose new fees for accessing content, not to mention slowing down connection speeds. If the delicate balance of the internet is upset, it could have grave consequences for businesses and human rights."

Splorf - considering how much control of the net Google tries to assert. Sorry, but "Free and Open" to Google means your content is free and open to Google, but then Google decides what of your content, if anything, is found in search; how far down below paid search results it appears; and the latest ... Google hoarding for itself the search phrases people use to find websites.

    .

Poor analogy, people use Google by choice, don't like google then use yahoo or bing instead. As for paid advertising, it works the same way with tv/magazine adverts, pay less money get a weaker slot, smaller advert, etc.

Despite Google trying to own the internet, I would rather back them in this because regulation will destroy this amazing innovation. Everybody who works online should sign it.

I got to agree Google got to be kidding us. This is not about open internet, they are trying to charge Google for getting information from newspapers.

Google is after his own benefit only. I didn't see Google bother to shake the internet when SOPA was about to crack it.

If Google really cared about people and supported them when they needed so, he would get enough support.

I think some in this thread don't know the story behind google's efforts - it's been in the news lately. There is a growing sentiment that the internet should be under the control of the U.N. Of course, that sentiment comes from countries wanting to profit from or restrict access to the web.

Google is U.S. based - I.C.A.N.N. is U.S. based - do you want the internet controlled by the U.N. with fees assessed by countries for your site to show up? Not sure the U.S. currently has the clout to shut down this move - google might be able to raise awareness.

Is the UN the Next Big Threat to Internet Freedom? - Businessweek

You think google censors you? That will be nothing compared to the plan being presented at the U.N. It's one of those proposals that will get attention - then fade away only to come back stronger in the future. Google is trying to prepare for a fight...at least the folks there are paying attention to the threat.

Very worrying. I don't like Google but they pose no threat to me, I can just choose another platform like Bing or Facebook to make money. But if the UN controls the entire internet, you can bet they will regulate the content and it wont be as easy for us to make money online.

The U.N. and what it stands for as a whole, is a threat to the whole world, and no one even knows it. I wont go there, can't on this forum.

Either way, Google, U.N. and any other company or organization that monopolizes and is after world domination and control online or offline needs to be shut down.

Its about preventing governments from having global domination of the internet. If passed, the govt will be dictating to you what you can and cant do.

How would you like to pay tax and a fee on every email you send?

How would you like dozens of regulations dictating what you can do from now on with your website?

How would you like a govt to be able to take away the website you've been building for the last 10 years because they didnt like your way of doing things?

Maybe Google isnt so bad after all

If you think things are bad now, go ahead, do nothing. Then see what its like trying to market online.

Google will seem as sweet as a kitten compared to whatll happen

Not all governments support the free and open Internet.

There is a growing backlash on Internet freedom. Forty-two countries filter and censor content. In just the last two years, governments have enacted 19 new laws threatening online free expression.

Some of these governments are trying to use a closed-door meeting in December to regulate the Internet.

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) is bringing together regulators from around the world to re-negotiate a decades-old communications treaty.

Proposed changes to the treaty could increase censorship and threaten innovation.

Some proposals could permit governments to censor legitimate speech — or even allow them to cut off Internet access.

Other proposals would require services like YouTube, Facebook, and Skype to pay new tolls in order to reach people across borders. This could limit access to information — particularly in emerging markets.

The ITU is also secretive. The treaty conference and proposals are confidential."

This may be a shock ... but a lot of countries are not "free and open". They are communist, socialist, run by dictators, etc. Trying to ram a "free and open" Internet down their throats is not going to work. I can think of a lot of ways Uncle Sam is not "free and open."

Here's the irony ... Google isn't "free and open" either.

Try to run an Adwords ad to your WSO on the Warrior Forum. Guess what? The forum is on a url ban list (aka censorship).

Try to run an Adwords ad with an affiliate link directly to a ClickBank offer. Then count the minutes until the permanent ban hits.

How many threads about YouTube bans do we have?

How many webmasters spend their days trying to comply with Google's ever changing "rules" dictating their website content, structure, backlinks, etc. Having a paid backlink is completely irrelevant to the content and value of a website - so why should it cause rankings to be punished?

Are there government controls worth looking out for? Absolutely! But claims like this are IMHO are over the top:

How would you like to pay tax and a fee on every email you send?
The biggest threat to many online businesses is Google. There are forum members from around the world. Interestingly, complaints, problems and concerns they have seem to gravitate around Big G and not particular governments.

Thats because governments have yet to gain control over the internet. There hasnt been anything to complain about, because they have yet to have any power over it.

Its like saying "well the dictator hasnt done anything wrong yet" before he has become president. As you can see in Egypt, once they have power people can act very differently.

They ARE looking to tax facebook, twitter, etc. For every message they send into the country.

You honestly dont believe that emails are next?

They've been talking about taxing emails for years, if they pass these acts facebook and twitter will start paying taxes for every bite of information they send. The same extension can easily go to email marketers.

In many ways, the US controls the Internet, or vast portions of it, and other countries have long disliked that fact.

For example, guess which one country has the power to take down a .com domain whenever it wants? Guess which one country has accelerated its use of that power to protect large copyright owners?

The US is able to extradite and imprison individuals from around the world for violating US law via the Internet. When was the last time you heard of other countries successfully doing this?

Don't you imagine other countries would also like such powers?

Discussions about "UN control" or treaties are nothing new.

Yes you are right with the points you make.

However what it means is that our profits are going to start erroding and being passed onto governments in the form of value added taxes.

I for one prefer to keep the profits to myself, instead of paying for someones new Mercedes because I want to send out an email or tweet someone.

It also means that the taxes facebook and google will have to pay will be passed onto advertisers. The fees raise Google and Facebooks hard costs, which in turn, raise our hard costs.

Basically it means we will be paying more, for no good reason.

The bottom line is, the internet is out of control. IT NEEDS REGULATIONS

Billions of dollars are scammed, kids are lured and come up missing. You can even learn how to build bombs or how to kill your teacher and classmates.

Governments say "regulate", Google says "control". I got news for Google, "YOU'VE BEEN TRYING TO CONTROL THE INTERNET FOR YEARS"

From the second you come online, you have Google bots following you around till you log off. Google takes tracking cookies to the extreme, they even have a satellite for crying out loud. When did search engines need satellites? The world has been mapped years ago, who is spying on who? You got facebook wanting to know your penis size, and if your turds have corn in it.

You think just because sites like mega upload got shut down, that they are going to shut ours down? They broke laws, we didn't. Not to long ago, there was a proposal in California, to label genetically modified food, and Kellogg spent loads of money to campaign against it, because it corn flakes use genetically modified corn, and it didn't want us to find out.

To hell with Google. Wikipedia shut it's site down in protest of SOPA, and where was Google? now all the sudden they want help from the people they have been trying to "control" all these years

Sounds like someone didn't get their Adwords check this month.

Plenty of people are scammed via phone and regular mail. Does that mean we need to shut them down also? No. It means people need to grow a pair and take responsibility for themselves. There is far too much hand holding these days. Why can't people take responsibility for their own actions for a change?

If you don't like what's on the channel, change it. If you don't want to get scammed use your brain and don't send money to people you met on a dating site or a Nigerian who claimed you won the lottery. The fact is the people getting scammed online are the same people who will get scammed offline. You don't fix it by closing down and regulating the Internet, you fix it through education so these gullible people can start to think for themselves and finally make sensible and informed decisions.

DMCA is pretty good at balancing protection and giving the benefit of the doubt. Let's keep it that way. I believe as much as Google can be two sided, an enemy of my enemy is my friend. I may not like everything about Google, but I don't want internet taxes put down my throat. Honestly, if I were in charge, I would get rid of copyright and patents. But that is for another rant.

Call it what you want but our corruption of a government is not going to allow control to anyone unless it's them

I don't get adsense checks, and have not been scammed thank goodness. The last time someone held my hand, I was a kid crossing the street.

If it wasn't for laws and regulations, we'd still be in caves, and you'd still be pounding your chest and yelling ooga booga. Nobody said anything about closing down the internet, they closed down sites that were breaking the law. If you are paranoid, then go to church.

Why on earth would someone be worried about getting their site shut down? If you are not breaking the law or scamming people, then what reason would they have to shut down ones site

Google has a profit motive to be in the fight. Otherwise, they wouldn't bother. The US and EU are already against the proposal.

EU stands with the US against proposed ITU internet changes: 'If it ain't broke, don't fix it'

Of course google has a profit motive - that's a given.

The government will never control the internet, that is nonsense, this is not a conspiracy.
You are arguing it - but you don't seem to be versed on this issue. It's not "the government" and it's not "the U.S."...it is the "U.N."

Right now the web is open for business - but if the attempts led by Russia, China and a few other countries succeed that won't be the case.

Yes, it's about money and taxation - but it's equally about power and many talking about this summit don't seem to believe that.

In ordinary times, I'd say this was a fluff about nothing - but these aren't ordinary times. The U.N. just passed a resolution the U.S. was firmly against - that's not usual but it's happening now. Countries staggering with debt are looking for revenue - and see the web as a prize and want their share.

This big summit could amount to a lot of talk and nothing more and then blow over - or it could blow up. We don't know - and that's why Google is raising the alarm.

Suzanne - ordinarily I would agree. You know I don't do the "petition bit" when people are screaming about their "rights"...but...

The US and EU recently opposed the vote on Palestine, too - and we had no influence on that vote. There is a shifting balance of power in the U.N. that bears watching.

The meeting being held will be interesting to see. Let's hope it's a lot of talk and nothing else. I guess at the worst we could just build a US/EU web and let these other countries have the old internet. Of course they wouldn't be allowed to enter OUR space.

Might be a good plot for a sci-fi book

This looks likely, as the US only get one vote at this summit. Google could cut off all the under developed countries quite easily though as they will not produce the revenue needed to pay any of the proposed data taxes they are talking about. This will mean that these countries will suffer slower economic growth which could be a disaster given the worlds economy. This proposal is a joke, they shouldn't mess with the internet as its working perfectly as it is and small businesses are able to thrive with the worldwide exposure the internet gives them. If this goes through it will become one big splintered internet, with separate zones and that isn't what the vision was for the 'World Wide Web'..

Why would I be kidding? Have a read up on it before replying with such a comment.

Developing nations may see sending-party-network-pays as a return to the good old days. But the more likely outcome is that content providers will simply refuse requests from countries where the expected revenue from its users (e-commerce, ad revenue, subscriptions) is less than the cost imposed by the receiving network. As the ISOC report puts it, “Sending-party-network-pays could therefore reinforce and make much worse the existing ‘digital divide.’” Countries who today may largely be requesting content without providing much in return may find their citizens cut off.
Taxing the incoming traffic will produce revenue for these countries to further develop their telecommunication infrastructures, or so they hope. When the costs outweigh the revenue its not a viable business model. All that will happen is Google will shut off their connection because they will not produce the revenue needed which will be a disaster for the internet.

        hi tpw,
