Warming Up A Cold List - What To Do?

Well late this summer I finally delved into list building. I got up to about 300 subscribers, and had a 5 piece follow-up with one promotional e-mail. I found that my conversions were ok, by my refund rate was ridiculous and ClickBank is getting mad at me.

My open rates and CTR were outstanding though.

I became discouraged by the refund rate, and didn't write my list for 5 weeks.

Bad move.

I finally sent another follow-up with a great freebie, and my open rate was ZERO. There were still almost 300 subscribers, but every single one ignored me.

I figure my list went cold... any suggestions how to heat it back up?

Yeah start sending at least 3 times a week and ask them in the subject of your first email how can I help you? And really mean it!

Start to build a relationship with your subs

Send a funny email to reactivate them, and dont try to pitch them anything so fast until they've "warmed up" to you. Copywriter John Carlton has a great reactivation letter that is funny and very effective.

Warn them of some products that you think they shouldn't buy..

When you do that, they will love it and be grateful to you.

    why?

You will look honest (and that's the main point) and unique (most of your
competitors are always recommending products to their lists).

Do it and I'm sure it's going to work

Why are you throw your hands up after ONE mailing? Stay in touch for a couple of weeks and then see what you get.

Usually once you've lost your list, you've lost your list. However, in this situation you need to gain their trust back, which takes time. Next time, make sure that you promote a quality product and most product owners will give you a review copy if they know that you're going to mail it out to your list, so be careful.

Start switching up your subject lines and email more frequently. I've found that emailing more frequently get's your email noticed because most subscribers are already on 100's of list so it gives you more exposure in their inbox. When you do mail more frequently, make sure it's value based content and use more of a soft-sell approach. There is nothing wrong with mailing more, as long as it's valuable.

But, don't concentrate all your efforts on warming your list, the fact is some will open and click and purchase, and some won't - it's a numbers game. All you can do is continue to bring new subscribers into your funnel everyday consistently, because no matter how much value and how much effort you put into your list, you can't please everyone and some will unsubscribe anyway.

Don't send them any emails where they have to pull out their wallets right away. Start with giving some free value (tips, tricks, unique information that pulls them in).

Put the list in the oven

but seriously, send some curiosity arousing emails, which will get their minds thinking, and even cliff hanger emails, where you tell them you will reply the answer in the next email, so that they are ready waiting and eager for the next one.

Provide value too, and don't forget to explain why you were away from messaging them.

Try offering a freebie or a giveaway product that your list can't resist. That will surely make them engaged and interested.

Ahhh - I was reading about this somewhere last week . . should have bookmarked the page!

Basically what the OP| said was that he picked a rant on a thread and copied it to his list, gave his opion to his list and asked for comments knowing that people quite like reading about confrontation etc

This is why I think list building is rather pointless.
Your situation is an everyday occurrence - once they get the freebie from the initial opt-in then that's pretty much it.
Most of your list won't even know who you are and will either delete the mail or would have flagged you as spam.

I'm a long way from being convinced that list building is pointless. My list is not built on a freebie, and my subscribers are all but hand-picked. No search traffic, no PPC, no banners, or any advertising at all. My subscribers are all people that have previously been exposed to my content in guest posts and forums.

I'm sure I started out building this list the right way, I should never have skipped out on it. I'm going to keep trying to warm it back up.

      I'll update with progress.
