What draws noobies to the IM niche?

Since I started on the forum I have seen tons of noobies and seasoned full timers say that one of the biggest most common mistakes of a noobie is to try and get into the IM niche at first.

For some lucky reason I was not drawn toward that niche but I am wondering what does?

Just out of curiosity - sat in the house on a Saturday night playing with wordpress . I need a little entertainment

I truly have no idea other than... People are stupid.

Everyone starts off as a newbie, but some people are not business intelligent. These people are the 95% of Internet Marketers that fail and quit.

Hopefully they will begin to actually read the forum tips and learn how to think like an Internet Marketer.

What draws people to choosing IM as a niche?

Knowledge - You do nothing but study IM and you aren't well rounded.
Cynicism - you secretly think internet marketing is a pyramid scheme
Ego - you want newbies to look up to you
Networking - you want to meet and connect with peers
Research - Internet marketing is growing all the time
Laziness - There's an overwhelming amount of content in the niche
Desperation - The need for more money really motivates people to buy, they'll buy expensive things with the hope they'll earn it back

    Other reasons too, I'm sure.

It's no secret. People flock to the MMO market because it's the one they read and hear about more often when first looking into internet marketing. In the beginning it's easy to assume Internet marketing IS the make money online market.

I will actually be addressing this issue head on. Short answer: People are attracted to making money online. Inside good make money online products is value to learn how to market online how to master preselling and selling. Its not wise for a person to immediately start in the make money online niche as the niche they target but the education inside of the make money online products does prepare you to correctly market in any niche. I can't speak for everyone, but I can tell you why I am doing it or why I started it.

I simply have something to offer and since I can offer it easily over the Internet, that's why I am doing it. I am selling basically my own products, used to sell some other too pretty much to hone my marketing skills, but I believe that selling your own original stuff is the way to go and it has worked well for me.

I doubt I was a typical newbie, though, but some newbies are like the way I was. And still am because my business model has not changed a lot. I am not even much of a marketer, basically a guy selling his emini trading ideas, to be specific, that have worked well for me in my trading.

What do you see advertised on the majority of infomercials?

    It's mostly 2 things.

    1. Weight Loss & Get Healthy Products
    2. Make Money Online, or in Real Estate, or Whatever.

Why do so many people start in IM? Because it's one of the 2 biggest niches, it's one of the few were cooperation exists on such a high level, and most importantly...

It's one of the easiest niches to turn a profit in when you're just starting out.

    Faulty cause and effect.

People come to a forum like this and think there is some "secret" they aren't being told. Then they look around and say "aha, all the prominent members here are selling products about internet marketing."

    BZZT. WRONG.

People who sell products about internet marketing are prominent members here.

This is our market. We come in here because you are the customers we want to buy our stuff. Most of us also sell other things. But because we don't advertise what other things we sell (since you probably don't care and won't buy them), you don't know we sell those things. If we stay in this business very long, we'll become prominent members here just like we're prominent members in other niche forums.

But before we sold anything about internet marketing, we sold other stuff in other niches to learn what we were doing. And when we got good at it, we came back here and put out internet marketing products. We didn't start here, and if you do, you're going to have serious trouble getting credibility.

      There's nothing wrong.

If you boil marketing down to its principles, you're always
wanting to move into a rabid niche, and this IM niche IS a
rabid crowd with a high amount of demand.

But here's the biggest problem newbies have. Not just the
IM niche, but in EVERY other niche out there.

They try to go against the strongholds of market leaders.
That, my friend, is committing business suicide.

What most newbies do in IM, fitness, weight loss, stocks,
      forex, travel, software, dating, etc.

They jump into the ultimate conclusion that:
      • If I'm interested in it, I'm going to market it
      • I'm the only one who is thinking of this
      • I'm just going to copy business models out there
Or at least one of the 3 on top.

Most newbies don't have a good foundation in marketing, and
they're always drawn to the "quick fixes" or diluted knowledge.

Here's the secret they don't realize:

As every market grows larger and larger... Its population
increases. However, as time passes, a phenomenon surfaces.

      Subdivision of markets.

Just as how the hardware market branched out into operating
systems and then into software. Just like how huge personal
computers branched out into laptops and then into tablets
      and smart phones.

Just like how weight loss programs branched out into diet pills
and into exotic miracle foods. How IM branched out into
ebook marketing and into Clickbank and into Kindle.

How American Idol branched out into Xfactor etc...

It's a huge characteristic of markets. And when you are the
first to market, you have the first-mover's advantage to claim
a huge portion of market share (aka customers).

I say that everyone else who claims that IM is not a good
market needs to revise their marketing foundations.

The only reason why the IM market is slightly different is that
      there is a buyer-affiliate-seller loop.

      1. The vendor sells the info-product to the buyer.
2a. The buyer promotes for the vendor or...
2b. The buyer tries to sell information to other buyers.
      3. They might end up cross-promoting.

And this is a huge headache for newbies, because this blurs
the line between vendors and buyers. It's like a magician
showing magic to a crowd of trained magicians.

The marketing is less effective and more competitive. But if
you can position yourself well, you're going to be able to
undercut a particular sub-niche, and slowly build your way up.

I say: promote your strengths, not your passion. Strengths
eventually become a form of passion.

If you're good at doing something, leverage that ability instead
of starting from scratch. It's going to accelerate your startup.

It's far easier to go from something to expertise, than to go from
      nothing to expertise.

It depends if you're interested in it. To be on this site at all, you have to have some sort of interest in IM. It's better than trying to do insurance when you know nothing about it and have no interest in it. If you're anything like me and you have a short attention span, but can spend hours reading on a place like this, clearly something is enjoyable about it for you.

Listen to everyone under the sun and it will get you nowhere unless you try it - and you never know - it might get you somewhere if you do.

I think discouraging and/or belittling newbies for choosing the IM niche is rather nasty - I had people do this to me a couple of years ago here and I wished I hadn't listened to them.

I've made more money of something I came up with myself than anyone elses niches or ideas.

For sure - it's almost certainly the single biggest cause of failure among beginning internet marketers.

To try to start out by advising people about internet marketing when you yourself have no successful experience of internet marketing is obviously ill-advised, and some would say it's of questionable morality, too.

I've run out of "thanks" for the day, but it seems to me that nobody can seriously question the value of the points made by both Micah and Caliban above (posts #2 and #11)?

Another reason why so many try the IM niches first, in my opinion, is that they've bought guidebooks full of misinformation written by people who found that the only way they could make anything online was by writing guidebooks full of their own beliefs (which - guess what? - are highly likely to be mistaken ones, and that's why they're selling shovels, having themseves failed at digging for gold). So the reality is that people often fail because they follow advice that never made any sense in the first place.

I think belittling them is rather nasty.

I don't think discouraging them from that niche is "nasty" at all: I think that overall, it's doing them an important and significant favor, and greatly increasing their chances of success, by suggesting that they avoid effectively trying to teach others something of which they themselves have no experience.

I only wish more people had explained it to me like that, when I started: it might have saved me a lot of time and started my income a few months earlier.

This forum even has some members who've been struggling with this for 2 years, partly because nobody ever explained this to them clearly enough 2 years ago: http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...tion-gone.html

I worded that wrong. It meant to say belittling and/or "discouraging and belittling". I think if the person knows what they're talking about and actually wants to help, discouraging them alone can be a very good thing.

Why most newbies started blogging in the IM Niche?

I think one of the biggest reason is that, upon doing their internet marketing research, they realized that they are now passionate about sharing IM related information to other people. Though to gain an authority in the IM niche they will eventually, apply what they preach in the future.

I mean, there's no bad thing in starting in the IM niche.

  • I guess they realize that the MMO niche is extremely profitable. What they do not realize, though, is that it also requires a lot of knowledge and will power to build up a business in this niche and that you'd have to spend some time and work to build up a good rep online.
Most people are scared of this work and therefore they end up failing IM and think that it's not possible to make money online.

I believe one of the main causes is you hear people making a lot of money in the "make money online niche"

The mistake is they have no prior experience or skills of how to do internet marketing. So starting out in a very competitive niche is generally hard - and people usually tend to give up because they do not see results quickly.

If you learn some new skills and not afraid - I say go for the IM niche - but if are still unsure, pick something not so competitive and dominate that niche

The idea of quick and easy money though most will come to realise that might not actually be the case because the market is so saturated. Hobbie, arts and crafts, sports type niches are much less saturated, little competition and the payout is much but no one seems to go for these types of niches. Suits me.

Every person has an ideal image or goal of what they want to accomplish and what they want to do in life.

Some people want to be millionaires that live in a big house.

Some people want the glory of being a millionaire.

Some people just want freedom, from fianancial slavery.

Some people want to help other people with their money.

    Some people want a challange.

In order for your to accomplish those goals you will need a roadmap and IM is one of the most if not the most effective ways to accomplish those goals. That is why I chose to get into IM and entrepreneurship. =)

They say it because it's TRUE.

Why would someone think they can teach other people about Internet marketing when they're brand-new to it? In truth, they can't.

The thing is, it's completely pointless and unnecessary. Everyone has topics they are knowledgeable and passionate about... START THERE!

If there's a sizable group of people who share your interest, it's likely there is money to be made in that niche.

    One more thing...

The WORST advice I've ever seen on this forum is to find a "desperate" medical niche and sell them a cheap, PLR report about treating their condition.

This is a horrible and DANGEROUS idea.

Seriously, what kind of person are you if you think taking advantage of people who are suffering and in pain sounds like a good idea?

Furthermore, what if the advice in your $3 piece of crap PLR report HARMS someone? Morally, are you okay with that?

Even if you are, what if that person SUES you? Are you prepared to spend many THOUSANDS of dollars on legal fees or judgments against you?

Finally, the FDA and FTC don't like them. And that's reason enough. The last thing you want to do is "wake the bear."

As such, unless you're a licensed medical professional... I would suggest that you AVOID those niches.

    To summarize...

Avoid the health/medical and IM niches. Instead, find something you're passionate about -- and get started.

    Good luck.

    John

Speaking for myself only, I started out freelance writing.

Many of my clients were top IM gurus - I didn't know what that was at first. As time went on, and I learned it, I discovered I wanted to share my journey - and be blunt and truthful about things, because some of the things I saw behind the scenes were completely shady.

I'm in other niches too - but I love this one. Changes people's lives - and there are some subscribers of mine who have been with me since I was a newbie myself. They enjoyed watching me build my business, share successes and failures and lessons I learned.

I think it's a great niche for newbies - as they also pursue a different niche if they want to.

The modern newbie watches the industry much longer than they used to. Ten years ago it sure seemed like everyone would show up and then either immediately get their feet wet or just quit. Nowadays we see newbies researching for a year or two or three before they do much of anything.

So at the tail end of that research period, what do they know the most about? They've been reading about how to make money online for X years, so that's what they move forward with once they finally hit production stage.

But it's stupid. There's not much money to be made for the average person pushing MMO materials. People talk a big game, but that's just for positioning.

Another thing is that there really is no bar of entry for MMO courses. All you need is Clickbank, Aweber and a very basic understanding of WordPress. Whereas those things are baby toys compared to more serious projects. Newbies that stick close to MMO don't like to climb those mountains.
