Hello. I have a site that I am working on, and I am trying to think of ways to promote it.(mostly the forum part) I have done free ppc ads with bing, posted on other forums, posted to craigslist, posted in site, wrote targeted articles (which have yet to be indexed), I use facebook and pintrest, and I considered adding a mod to my site. Are there any ways to add traffic to my site?

    You can buy ad space through buysellads on niche related sites for some traffic.

    Have you done any SEO to get traffic from Google, Bing, and Yahoo?

      Yeah, I have been. I have been trying to put up more content on my site related to long tail keywords, but I am waiting for google to index them. I already have a source that has 1,000 searches a month, which I currently am number 3 in. But yeah, maybe I will add a twitter account and also drill away at facebook. I would post to other sites, but most of them are insignificant, or they dont allow link posting. Thanks

      Hey, that SocialMediaBar.com is a slick tool for creating links to framed content.

      As far as promoting your forum, try using self-shot girl pics on flickr. Here is a link to a Brad Gosse webinar on the technique: http://www.webinarswaps.com/r/203/4791

    driving traffic, in my opinion you just need to think the way the offline business works in promoting their products.
    They do ALL THINGS to promote the products even with the free promotion they still do lots of things. For example, they build community, they spread the brochures to the whole city, they do telemarketing, they do anything.

    In my opinion, it works the same in online business, so to get more traffic you need to do all things needed. For example, you need to do youtube videos, pdf sharing, podcasting, etc.

    I would start posting some stuff on your forum to get the ball rolling. Instead of writing articles and then submitting them to article directories, why not add that content to your forum. Then the search engines will probably pick them up and get you some more free traffic.

    From that alone, people might start to join your forum.

    Not to discourage you, but I find that about the
    toughest thing to do online is is start and run a
    successful forum. Just to get the momentum
    going is tough and to beat out the competition
    is even tougher.

    I was a member of a few marketing forums
    before Warrior won them all. And these
    were marketing forums so they should know
    a thing or two about marketing.

    Another example was Fortin's Copywriting forum.
    It was about the most successful copywriting forum
    online then it shut down and a few people tried to
    start another and they all fell flat--even though
    they were made up of many of the members from the
    old Fortin forum.

    That's why if you can answer the question "How
    to start and build a successful online forum?" you'll
    solve a great marketing puzzle.

    Many people still try to figure out why the Warrior
    Forum has been so successful versus all the others.

    It's not an easy answer. Leadership? Moderation?
    Marketing?

    I don't really know what your forum is all about but starting on a niche where there isn't lots of top players can be very helpful. Nevertheless, no matter the competition if you have the resources, skills and patience you can secure a spot for yourself.

    Here is a few pointers to help you develop your new forums.

    1. I don't really have idea on what you should do but ensuring you have consistent activities on your forum everyday is great, refreshing and kills the boredom. These will help keep your clients asking for more like oliver twist.

    2. Offer irresistible stuffs, discussion, new updates on time, free give way, competition e.t.c. Just be creative and always remember the world is always open to new things, don't be afraid to implement that new stuff. It could just be the last straw to break the camels back. Also research and create sub threads that provide solutions to your chosen niche.

    3. Optimized your forum or site related to your forum and ensure you have lots of targeted organic traffic coming your way/site. Traffic, traffic, traffic is key to sign ups to your forum. Ensure you connect your site to the forum as well.

    4. Using paid advert like adword allow you to get heard, seen by billions of people in minutes all over the world.

    5. Never leave out social media marketing like (Twitter, Facebook, Myspace, Linkedin and others). Interact professionally with your audience is necessary to showcase the future and importance of the forum.

    6. Research and pick as many top sites related to your niche that doesn't have forum and offer to give them a space for their discussion.

    7. Get real moddys and not dummies.

    8. Explore your options.

    9. Keep the fire burning..

      I've joined a quite a few forums online on a few topics:

      * Computing
      * Programming
      * Body Building
      * Internet Marketing

      Not only 1 on each topic but multiple. What attracts me to a forum are:

      * If it's active - this helps because if you have any questions then at least I know there is someone there to answer. Otherwise there is really no point in me joining.
      * Is the information helpful
      * Also can I learn anything new here
      * Not too many self promotional posts

      This is from a subscribers point of view and is probably why we have all joined the warrior forum .

      If there isn't that much activity may be you could outsource some of this so there are discussions and activity in the forum.

      Hope this helps .

    Thanks, Ray.

    Here's what I did.

    1. Post content. Not articles but forum posts that actually provide tips and ideas. I started my forum out of a personal need to promote my own copywriting services. I wasn't looking at attracting copywriters as much as I did prospects. I offered free critiques on my forum and invited people to post their copy so I can critique them. Other copywriters eventually joined and chimed in, and it created a lot of buzz.

    2. Invite discussion. Always. Ask questions. As #1 above, I specifically asked for critiques. But more importantly, my critiques were never the final word -- I always asked others to post their thoughts and suggestions. And since the forum was well optimized (I used vBSEO for vBulletin), copywriters knew that posting their own critiques would get them noticed by potential clients (my forum was crawling with prospects looking for copywriters, so it was a great way to hang your shingle).

    I also started threads on specific copywriting and freelancing topics. For example, "What kind of music do you listen to when writing your best copy?" And the like. And then just see where it goes.

    3. Attract attention. Not just for linkbait, but to create awareness. For example, give thanks and credit where credit it due. I tried as much as I could to link to appropriate sources. Even when some were so small and insignificant. Why? Because it's not just about what you know but also who you know (and what Harvey Mackay once said, "what you know about who you know"). Best of all, I gave a lot of "shoutouts" to other copywriters and marketers, which also created a lot of linkbait and trackback conversations.

    Now, another good way to attract attention is to focus on the three greatest human teasers: a) curiosity, b) controversy, and c) scarcity. I used a lot of controversy to sprout healthy debates and spirited discussions. Some topics were hot, hot, hot... like long copy, hype, and scams, for example. (And yes, the occasional sexual, religious, and political topic crept in and created a lot of stir. Sure, I tried to avoid those topics as they were taboo subjects. But when it was related to copy, I allowed it... like, say, politically charged copy, or male copywriters vs. female ones, etc.)

    But be careful, especially with controversy.

    My forum's increasing popularity and hot debates were part of its downfall. I had to close it because egos clashed and there was a lot of infighting among moderators who were, essentially, competitors with one and other. I blame only myself for allowing this to get out of hand.

    So, add content, invite discussion, attract attention.

    Apologies in advance (please dont cry) as I have not read the entire thread but I dont think you have mentioned what niche. Personally I think that is going to be your most important thing to know that will answer your question.

    Marketing is like fishing.

    If you know what kind of fish you are going for you will know what they like to eat, where they swim, when they bite etc.

    You can take one group of people and another group of people and where they hang out, what they buy, and talk about totally different things.

    Like say for instance you want to target butchers with a set of new steel V a bunch of people that want to get a hot date online.

    Think of it like that.

    Then you just have to begin building and strengthening those channels back to your forum. There are many top 100 etc lists online for building free traffic.

    Like someone already suggested, the best way to get people using your site is to create discussion, so begin posting yourself, consider payed posting and try to discuss hot topics or better yet controversial topics. Link to people within the community, they will most likely see those link backs and will visit your site themselves.

    Then finally dont be afraid to email people and ask for their memberships. Email people in the community and industry, see if you can strike deals "use my site and tell your lists and customers about me and ill give you xx amount of free advertising".

    Quality is your main friend: good design, unique content and a lot of work. Promote with links in signature and post good messages, not spam. make some exchanges, put the link in free to add directories with pr. Pay some adwords campaigns .. work constantly and you'll make it

    If you are really looking to drag traffic to you forums, You have to learn the basic SEO. Its not rocket science , just placing and playing.
    You can start with social book marking and tell the people about your website forums. Article Submission, Forum Directories Submission etc.
    I am sure you will get traffic now and then.!

    Actually traffic is not enough in my own observation.
    Even if 1000 people goes through your site a day, why should they bother to join and post in your forum if they see that no one else is there to comment back to them to answer their question or something they want to duscuss?
    Unless you have at least three people making useful posts everyday on the forum to update it, then those traffic won't be in vain.
    The design may not be that important at all depending on your forum niche.
    I've seen forums that do not have any designs at all but get's unique traffic and visitors everyday and members.
    Reason?
    Because they're forum is about something unique that a lot of people are looking for.
    For example (owners of this type of forum may kill me but here goes), there are some swimming pool forums that doesn't have any complicated designs and some that started without any designs at all, but a lot of people continued to join and post questions about their pool seeing that there's a knowledgeable admin and a few people posting.
    For this example, it's the need of that topic that drives people to join and post on that swimming pool forum.
    See?
    If it's unique, you just need to bring it to a higher page when searched or hire posters that will make your forum look active so that whenever someone sees it and needs something from your forum, they know someone's going to answer them.
    Just like here in WF, do you think you'd start this thread quickly if you see there's only 3 members, 3 threads (their introduction) and the last post was last year?
    I'm not sure about you, but I'd move one to a similar forum where I'm sure someone's going to reply to me.

    Hope this helps.
    Cheers!

      To fill it up you need to actively post daily with several different accounts. Once you get a decent amount of posts you can start getting some ad space through buysellads.com and try to look for a very targeted website to your niche. Just keep on posting consistently and you're bound to have new subscribers once you get visitors from your ads.
