Using Creative Commons License as a Marketing Strategy?

Licensing your creative works under a Creative Commons license is an awesome way to allow others to share and use your creative work. But, couldn't it also be used as part of a marketing strategy?

By licensing your work under a Creative Commons license, you're making your work easy to share and your get credit for your work as well.

There's no need for someone to ask for permission as long as they stick to the Creative Commons license you've chosen and if they do use it. In other words, it's easy for someone to use and share... which means more people would want to use and share your work.

Normally, if you're using a Creative Commons work online, it's common to include a link in the attribution.

So, by licensing your work under a Creative Commons license, it could lead to more exposure as well as more links pointing to your site. This is what lead me to licensing my blog text under a CC license.

So here's my question, how many of you license your works under a Creative Commons license as part of your marketing strategy?

It can be any of your creative works that you've licensed under a Creative Commons license... images, text, music, video, your blog, your documents, presentations etc.

Here's another question: If you've never thought of it as part of a marketing strategy... but licensed your work under a Creative Commons license anyway... what work did you license under a Creative Commons license?

I have not tried the strategy but it sure is promising to me considering the amount of traffic and exposure you will be getting. The problem though is exactly how you can implement the strategy?

I suppose the first step to implementing this strategy would be to make sure you create something that people want to share and/or use (in other words, your creative work needs to stand out or be different than the norm or be above average).

The next step would be to make it clear that you've licensed it under a creative commons license.

Finally, make sure people see what you've created... and that it's under a Creative Commons license.

I suppose the easiest way to get started, would be to make sure your creative work is mentioned on places that people go to, when they look for creative commons work. Now, this will depend on what your creative work is. Some sites incorporate Creative Commons licensed work, for example:

      Scribd.com for documents

      Slideshare.net for presentations

      Youtube.com for videos

      Flickr.com for Images
